Sensimar Minos Palace - Adults Only

Reviewed September 18, 2012

I have recently returned from a 1 week stay in the Minos Palace and had a fantastic time. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, and when we arrived we were pleasantly suprised with our upgrade to a suite with a shared pool, which had beautiful views over the bay.

The hotel was lovely and peaceful, I would honestly recommend this hotel for anyone seeking a quiet and relaxing holiday.

The main town of Agios Nikolaos is a 40 minute walk into town, but its actually a nice stroll along the sea front and a taxi back is only 6 or 7 euros. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening as we went into town but breakfast and lunch was lovely, especially the Taverna which has beautiful views and excellent food.

I am getting married in Elounda next year and will definitely be recommending this hotel for my guests to stay in.

Fantastic !!! Place is gorgeous, food is delicious, service is outstanding. Highly recommending to everyone who appreciate it.
What else? Beautiful beach, plenty of room for all guests. Simply can not understand how come some folks could be unhappy in this paradise! I've paid around 4000 bucks for 12 nights, two persons, half board including flight. Consider it reasonable, in the States you are not gonna get nothing even close for such kind of money...

I came back today after a wonderful week spent at the Minos Palace. The staff are lovely and friendly, especially the bar staff and Andreas in particular was very customer focused. The only down side was that the furniture (in the reception and library especially), needed a bit of an update as they were looking very worn and scruffy. Also, the private pools seemed to be lacking attention as there was scum around the rims which hadnt been cleaned for weeks. Otherwise, a superb hotel.

We were in Minos Palace July'12 and it was a fantastic experience! If you are looking for relaxing quiet atmosphere, wonderful views and comfortable rooms - that is your choice. Hotel is located a bit further away from the all the hustle of Agios Nikolaos, but is still walking distance from it.
Me and my family travel a lot, but Minos Palace is one of the hotels where us all would love to come back one day! Great value for money, especially if booked in advance.
Thank you for great holidays!

I met my husband in Agios over 35 years ago when there was no Minos Palace Hotel and Agios Nikolaos was a lovely, charming fishing village. We have stayed at the Minos Palace several times and along with the destruction of St Nikolas so has the hotel gone down in my eyes. This is now a mass tourism hotel for group and package travel. If that is what you are interested in then this is your hotel. I read that there were massive renovations but that is not true. I will try and discuss the pros and cons and then you can all decide. First of all , Crete is not what it used to be and it is heartbreaking to see nothing but concrete and billions of tourists , I swore that last time I was here I would never return, I guess I had to come a last time to be really sure. If you have never been to Greece, please stay away from Crete unless you are happy to fly here for a week, stay at the hotel and never leave it. St. Nikolas lost all its charm many years ago, such a shame, now just a tourist trap with very few local Greeks left to serve you in the restaurants.

The hotel:

Pros:
The staff! Everyone was very nice and helpful especially Kostas at the desk who went way out of his way to make us happy, and he did, I can not thank him enough. We had booked a sharing pool room and were given one facing the parking lot which was depressing because you could hear all the cars, trucks and motorcycles from the main road. Kostas was nice enough to move us to a suite facing the sea with sharing pool. The pools are absolutely lovely, if a little too cold but will probably warm up in July. These sharing pools are new but that is all. But the setting is just beautiful, each room has a private patio with sunbeds and olive trees! Table and chairs, just wonderful and confortable.
The views of the hotel are what makes this hotel the success it is, the views are magnificent and the layout of the property beautiful. There are many platforms for sunbathing which arevery private with gorgeious views. The main pool is also very lovely.
The rooms are well air conditioned which was especially important for us since buildings of this era were not insulated and the radiation from the walls can be unbearable, as in many buildings in Greece.
The beach taverna is lovely with very good food .
The beach bar, also lovely with beautiful views, but didnt have a drink there so canèt comment..

The cons
Rooms
WAY overpriced for the condition of the rooms! I read in a previous review that the hotel had been completley renovated, this is not the case at all , at least for the suites and we stayed in two of them, so I assume they are all the same. They were exactly the way they were 10 years ago. These rooms and the hotel are in desperate need of a total redo. It is shameful for them to call this a 5 star deluxe hotel. The beds a hard, thanks to a previous review I requested mattress toppers which help a lot. The furniture in general is very outdated and the wood old and worn out The bathrooms are awful for a 5 star. They are small, the doors are vintage 1980 and the shower is in the bathtub in which you need to pole vault to get into, it is unappetizing. The bathroom floor tiles are ugly and all the chrome is old and discoloring. The toiletries are a joke. There is a combination shampoo-shower jet in a container on the wall which was almost emtpy, no conditioner. I forgot toothpaste and they said they didinèt have any, all hotels I have visited in this category have this simple item. The body lotion they have is very nice. The towels which are in good condition are very nice but many are threadbare and the robes have seen better days. The rooms are also very dark, the lights just awufl and depressing, makes the whole room feel like a tunnel. There are flat screen tvs and the rooms are very large, so that is nice,
The only other meal we had at the hotel was breakfast which is big on quantity and small on quality! Tons of food, but none of it very good, just food for masses. The juices are awful, the only way to get fresh orange juice is if you make it yourself, they have two machines and always a million people in line to squeeze the oranges, unnacceptable. The yogurt, which I was truely looking forward to since Crete always had fabulous yogurt, was inedible, I have no idea where they get it but it is awful and don`t get me started on the honey which tastes like molasses
The beach - if you are expecting a nice long beach, youu will be very disappointed, I always knew it was small, but it is ok and I enjoyed swimming, but not the best place and certainly not a good beach for Greece.

In summary, this hotel is trying to pass itself off as a luxury hotel and it could be if it underwent a true renovation to bring it up to modern luxury levels. It caters to groups and package tours and it just isn`t worth the amount they charged, I can only say I`m not upset because we were upgraded. If you are looking for luxury, you need to go to Elounda which is far away. We chose th Minos Palace because of it`s proximmity to Ag. Nikolaos which is now not a fun place to visit. But it`s location is the best thing going for it.

It all depends what you are looking for on your vacation and this is a very nice property but there are so many more beautiful places to see in Greece, Crete has been ruined by tourism and greed of the locals that built on every square inch of land.
I want to end by saying the service was excellent and I commend the staff who always had a smile and tried their best to help.

Room Tip: ask for true sea view, they call the lagoon views sea views but you will hear traffic.

Dear guests,

Thank you very much for visiting Agios Nikoaos again after such a long time and for making the Minos Palace the hotel of your choice. We appreciate your feedback and we feel very sorry that you did not like Agios Nikolaos anymore, which indeed has grown a lot in the last years but still offers a lot of nice and authentic places. Compared with other places at the Cretan costs, Agios Nikolaos still is one of the most idyllic towns – but of course not a fisher’s village anymore.

We have read your detailed review with a lot of interest. Please be sure, that we will work in your critic points in order to improve and we appreciate your suggestions.

Concerning the renovation we want to inform, that we made a bigger renovation 2 years ago and each winter we do smaller renovations like for example painting works and maintenance. With a complete renovation we have to wait, until the economically situation in Greece is a bit more stable in order to be able to make bigger plans. We only can ask our guests for comprehension.

Dear guests, if one day you decide to come back to Crete, we would be very happy if we may welcome you again.

With best regards,
Yours sincerely Minos Palace hotel management

We booked (may 2012) a suite with private pool and jacuzzi which is an € 1.211,- upgrade (week). However because of the low temperature of the jacuzzi we haven't used this at all. There is a heating switch that we put on at the day of our arrival, but even after a week it was still to cold to enjoy. Also we noticed that -except for a diehard- nobody took a swim, also the pools
were to cold to have a comfortable swim.

The beds are way to hard, so the hotel deliverd a "topping" on the third day which gave some relief but still not as comfortable as you might expect. (cheap sheets and blankets)

So it is a nice location, but not worth a 1.211 upgrade, perhaps the temperature of the pools is better in july/august.

Be sure to hire a rentalcar (about €30,- p/day) because of the remote location and it is worth to explore the nice area

Dear guests,

Thank you for visiting Crete and for making Minos Palace the hotel of your choice. We appreciate your feedback and we honestly regret, that you did not enjoy your stay as much as we hoped for you.

Depending from personal habits, some guests might feel the matrasses of our beds too hard. Other guests prefer to sleep on harder matrasses, because they are used to it from their own beds at home. But with toppers we can arrange for every guest and his individual needs a comfortable bed, as we also did for you after you informed us.

Concerning the jacuzzi we want to point out, that during the winter season we changed all the heating systems of the jacuzzis and that they are working. After your complaint we checked all jacuzzis again and found them working as they should. But of course our pools and jacuzzis also need some support from the sun to heat up a bit more and to allow a comfortable swim also for guests, who prefer warmer water. Kindly note, that during your stay in the beginning of May, the sun was not strong enough yet and the weather conditions not very stable. We think, therefore you felt the Jacuzzi too cold for your personal needs.

Dear guests, please accept our sincere apologize for the inconveniences during your stay. It would be a big pleasure for us, if we might welcome you again and to convince you from our ability.

With best regards,
Yours sincerely Minos Palace Hotelmanagement

Went at the end of August 2011, booked full board as we normally go to All Inclusive resorts. We arrived early hours of the morning, the receptionist told us we had been up graded to Full Board Plus, which meant we received wine and beer with our meals.
Rooms: We were then taken to our room, and wow what a room, we had a suite with a private pool which was fantastic. Walk in wardrobe, lounge with large sliding door on to the patio overlooking the pool and jacuzzi, another large slding door lead into the bedroom, which had patio doors to the outside as well. The bathroom had a bath with shower over, his and hers sinks and a steam room, you could leave the sliding door from the bedroom open lay in the bath and look through the bedroom to the outside, bliss, (the loo was completely separate to the bathroom).
Food: As we arrived so late there was a meal in the room of cold meats and cheese, salad and fruit plus a bottle of wine. We didn't really leave our room much and ordered room service on a couple of days for lunch as the prices were so good. One word of warning the portion sizes are huge, we both like our food but on the first day we went to the tarvena for our lunch and had pasta, which tasted lovely but would have fed four rather then two, so be prepared to put weight on!! The choice at the evening buffet was excellent, my partner is a fussy eater but he always found something to eat as there was so much to choose from. Don't go expecting chips, burgers & chicken nuggets, although they do have chips some nights.
Entertainment: Have to agree with some of the other reviewers about the entertainment lacking that certain something, just a man, an organ and some dodgy 70's & 80's songs, funny on the first night but after that a bit annoying. Depends on what you want from your entertainment, if it's full on showtime then you will be disappointed, if it's DJ Deck's A Lot, then again not here, but if it's a bit of background music while sipping your cocktail and watching the sun go down, then you will be OK.
I would highly recommend this resort, so if you are thinking about it don't, just get it booked!!
