my family have been staying at the lato since 1996 and can honestly say we have never had a problem with bedding and towels being changed regularly. the rooms are cleaned daily except sundays, but even then the bins are emptied. I think people forget they're staying in a 2* hotel and want 5* service. we are not the TYPE of people who carry tea bags and tins of beans in our luggage( IF WE WERE, WE WOULDN'T BE STAYING AT A B&B WITH NO COOKING FACILITIES) we are the kind of people who like to get to know the local people try some local food, and enjoy the the beautiful breakfast on offer at the lato, with some home made treats served up as additional extras. maybe you haven,t stayed in 2* accommadtion in other parts of Greece, because if you had you ,d know none of them offer the range of food at breakfast. the rooms a small but functional and seeing as we are not those type of people who book a holiday and stay in their rooms for most of it they are just fine.

Room Tip: don't be put off by negative reviews

Returned last week from yet another visit to this fabulous little, family run hotel where nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. Honestly they cannot do enough for all their guests, whether first time visitors or returning guests, of which there are many. This hotel may be only 2star but the welcome and service are five star. The hotel is quiet, spotless, set in lovely gardens and has a beautiful clean pool with lots of sun beds. The beach is a five minute walk away and the town twenty minutes along a lovely coast road which makes The Lato a great choice for anyone wanting to explore Aghios Nikolaos. Can't wait to return next year, just like coming home! Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Any front room has a fab view of the coastline.

Read the reviews and was not expecting a great deal but....I was not happy to arrive at 3am to a grumpy greeting ( Basil Fawlty would have made us feel more welcome!) There was not even a bottle of drinking water in the bedroom, the beds as were hard as rock and single, great if you are not romantically inclined, and no air conditioning! I cried myself to sleep! The room was basic, cleanish on arrival but other than occasional linen changes no cleaning done for 10 days.
Breakfast was average and the bar snacks very English. Would suit the sort of person who likes to carry tea bags and tins of beans in their suitcase! If we had booked this as a cheap hotel independently and not paid the extortionate price as we did through the abysmal Thomas Cook it may have been acceptable but it left a lot to be desired. Pool was reasonably good, snacks limited and disappointing. Ag Nik was lovely but a long hike in the heat however the bus service was very good. The beaches were not great and about 15 mins walk from the hotel. Definitely would go back to Ag Nik again but not to Hotel Lato. Thank goodness for the Kri Kri restaurant almost next door to the Lato it was fantastic!!

Room Tip: If you do stay here, choose a room at the front with a sea view.

The cleaning service in Lato is 7 days a week. It's every day. Only a very few low cost travel agents have a 6 days cleaning service - except Sundays.
These travel agents always ask for the lowest rates possible in order to be mostly competitive.

Linen and towels are changed every 2-3 days. There is a sign in the bathroom explaining that and indicating that if guests, for any reason, believe that the towels or linen should changed for any specific day, they could just leave them on the floor and the maids will change them. In other words, further than the typical, if anything extra must be done it is done.

We do control the cleaning service by inspecting, processing questionnaires and reading reports.
If guests could see the results in percentage, they would very well understand why we do not accept this comment for the cleaning service. Percentage results give a very different idea, that the service is effective.
Just ask your self: You stay in a hotel for 10 days. You think that they don't clean your room at all and you never report it in order to fix the problem - but just wait to go home and write it in a web page? 10 days? Hmmm....

The distance of the nearest beach ( AMMOUDI BEACH) is like 350 meters away. I hardly believe that someone needs 15 minutes for that. Anyway, distance is not measured in time needed...Nothing simpler for anyone than using Google Maps and have a look. Maps don't make mistakes.
We do respect guests opinion and we need to know any kind of negative experiences they might have in order to improve our service...But guests should ask their self before posting...am i getting a little unfair?

Another year at The Lato and as always we had a great time. We have stayed here a few times before usually in a group but this year me and my husband returned just us two. It was great to see all the familiar faces, guests and staff.
The hotel as always was great we had room 204 which is a sea view room with a great balcony and a view to die for. Van and both Georges where helpful and friendly as always along with the ladies who do the breakfast and the cleaning they do a great job also as I've stated in my previous reviews Jeanette who works the bar is a good laugh and does a great lunch and a mean cocktail.
I'm disappointed to see some bad reviews this year with rather petty comments knowing if you have any issues the hotel will do there best to help out. Agios Nikolaos is a great place its quiet and peaceful and provides a relaxing atmosphere if you need to be entertained then maybe its not for you.
We love this hotel and will be returning next year. Try the restaurants on the way into town mainly Avra or Knossos there food is beautiful and reasonably priced.
Ammondi beach is the nearest beach and we where thrilled to see it had been given a make over this year with new beds and brolleys and a new bar that does lounger service we had lunch and drink here a few times and really enjoyed it however after a few days the bar was closed and loungers taken from the beach in a public dispute so we will wait to see what happens with this but take down your towels and have a dip it really is a great beach and the sea perfect!

I would echo everything rubbish66 has said, but would add that no matter how the air con and fridge are paid for, they should work! The air con in my 2nd floor rear facing room was inadaquate - took 2 hrs for the room to cool when returning late afternoon, and never, ever switched off all night, hence 18c was never reached. The fridge worked intermittently and did not keep anything cold. Eventually mine was changed on the 11th day, but at best kept things cool, not cold.

My tiny balcony was less than 2 foot deep, this may be due to the arrangement Thomas Cook has with the hotel for single rooms. There is no Thomas Cook rep in the hotel or even in Agios Nikolaos, so no way I could check this. This was not a cheap holiday and included a hefty single supplement, so Thomas Cook will be getting a complaint!

Plus points, clean rooms and free wifi. Personally I prefer a more professional hotel.

We do understand your negative experience about the use of these 2 facilities - the A/C and the mini fridge. And we honestly feel bad that this affected your holidays.

That mini fridge is for keeping things cool, not making hot things, cold. You are correct, indeed. It is manufactured to have a limited size and mostly, to be quiet!! This limitation reflects to their final effectiveness...We cant just place a large, domestic fridge in the room, can we? Therefore, we suggest that guests buy things already cold so that this mini fridge can keep them in a good temperature all night long.

The A/C unit, is a 9000 BTU machine, which, by manufacturer's tech. data, is more than enough for a room of that size. But yes, if you set it to 18 c. it will never be able to get there! It is practically impossible when it is 30 c. outside. But do you honestly need 18c. to sleep? The idea is to use the device for some hour and switch it off when you feel o.k. Otherwise...Set it at around 23 and press the silence button. It will work - stop for a little - and start again to keep it stable.
It is impossible to cool the room in 10 minutes, when at day time, it is like 37-38 c. outside.

Regarding Travel agent's rates...I don't really know what you paid for your holidays overall but i very well know what is coming in the hotel's pocket at the end! You really have to consider that also!

We just got back last Wednesday from our two week stay in the Lato hotel, on first impressions it was a lot smaller than it looks on the web site, but then we did arrive late as we had been delayed due to the French air strike, the room was small but quite adequate, two single beds, a dressing table, small bed-side table, and the wardrobes were built either side of the balcony doors, the balcony was small but big enough for a small table and two chairs, a table with a kettle and cups on it, the bathroom was small but we had no problems with the shower like most people had mentioned on trip advisor, the fridge was a joke, you could only get in two large bottles of water and a carton of milk, no freezer compartment, although my husband did find space to put in a bar of chocolate and i did manage to put some eye drops in the little shelf on the door, which you had to pay 2 euro's per day for, the air con was the same 2 euro's a day, same went for the safety boxes when we found them, Next day breakfast was in the main building with tables spread out on the patio, the selection of food was good, with bacon, eggs, sausage, bread,or toast (you made yourself) home made preserves, home made cakes, home made yogurt and honey, also a small selection of cereals, which were the usual Greek ones, fresh fruit, fruit juice and ample supply of fresh coffee and tea. The women who assisted at breakfast also did the cleaning which was very good the rooms were kept clean, the bed linen and towels were changed every 4 days as they wanted to try and help conserve there resources on the island but if you wanted you could have them changed more regularly. The pool was small but cold enough just to have a quick dip, the sun loungers were good but the space around the pool was quite small but not everyone stayed during the day as there was a beach not far away, On a night time between 6 pm and 8 pm is happy hour, but nothing was different, the prices were the same, just everyone was out in their finery ready to go to the taverners to eat, there was no games been played no dressing up nothing at all like mentioned on trip advisor, once everyone had gone to eat it was like the Marie Celeste only the night porter left who would serve drinks if you requested. I would recommend that if you can get a room on the front of the building as the back is very noisy at night with dogs barking and cockerels crowing even one night we had some cats fighting, If you like us like a quiet holiday then this is the place for you but if not like some people that stayed there then get yourself of to Chania.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front of the building some say they are noisy because of the cars but i found the back...

The Lato is a nice clean wee hotel but if like us you get rooms on ground floor at back they are reminiscent of a RSPCA cat and dog home. Very busy at the pool with people up at the crack of dawn to reserve their favourite spots. When we were there one couple completely blocked the way in at the deep end. Beds are extremely hard and you have to pay 5 euros a day for air conditioning, 2 euros per day for use of fridge and 2 euros a day for safe.

The breakfasts were odd to say the least with ham being fried and served as bacon. There was also cake and milk puddings mmmmm not my cup of tea.

Whilst snacks were served from 11.30 until 3.00 and were very nice, that was it. No ice cream, crisps or any other form of snack was available. If you required a drink of any kind you had to go to reception.

The area around the Lato was very run down with a lot of shops closed down and the beaches were very small and man made with builders sand which stung when the wind blew. It was a good 20 minute walk into the centre of town and in the heat of the day was heavy duty. All the tavernas served the same food so a week would have been plenty unfortunately after 2 weeks it had become extremely boring. No entertainment of any kind in the evening either still hotel or in the centre other than eating. Would not recommend or return.

Room Tip: You would need to request a sea facing room and if you were very lucky you might get one.

This reservation was made through a low cost travel agent and A/C - fridge is not included in this agent's rates. This is written in the contract between hotel and agent and is agent's obligation to state it and inform their clients.
So, in other words, the cost of these holidays didn't include the use of these facilities in the first place, in order the agent to be more competitive in the market. It is optional to pay for these.
Direct bookings with the hotel include A/C and mini fridge in the rate. Specific internet collaborators also include it.
The safe is charged 2 euro per day, anyway, in all kind of reservations. Not just a box, the area is under video surveillance for extra safety.
