It is difficult to be critical of this hotel at this price. We chose to stay in a room at the back - so we didn't have a sea view, but neither did we have road noise from the busy (in summer) road between Ag Nik and Elounda. The rooms are adequate, the beds quite typically basic at this price point and the bathroom is fine. The air conditioning works! The pool is large enough, there is no shortage of sun beds and there is shade if you want it. The breakfast is excellent: a modest but good quality hot buffet, lovely yoghurt, homemade cakes and preserves. The place is very clean. The staff are generally helpful and friendly. There's plenty of parking. So what's not to like at Euro 54 per room per night B&B?
It's true that you can't walk to a good beach, but if that's what you want, don't stay in Ag Nik. It's a shortish walk into town where there's a good choice of restaurants (be selective, but Kri Kri is almost next door and we found it to be fine) and bars.
Perhaps the only reason not to stay here if you are travelling independently is that it is heavily used by tour companies.

My wife and I have just returned from our two week holiday in June from the Hotel Lato where once again we had a wonderful time,We were met by George one of the family who after signing us in helped us with our cases to our room. The hotel is the same as I have said before in my other reviews without exception, it is still run by the family ie (Two Georges -Vangelis -their sister Myer) and of course the maids who work very hard cleaning the rooms and serving breakfast and other duties. The breakfast has a very good selection of food which has items added to it each year, there is a outside bar which sells food and drink between 11am till 3pm and is run by Jeanette who will serve you with the best snacks you will get anywhere (do try her home made chips). Jeanette is also back in the evening between 6pm and 8pm for happy hour and cocktails after 9pm the night man Yannis is on duty. This year we found out that the hotel had been open since May 1984 and we first came to the hotel in May 1984 so we along with George and the family and other guests had a celebration of 30 years as we have been coming back since then along with many other, read my other reviews on this hotel to find out just what it is that makes this hotel so special people keep coming back again and again so well done to George and your family and I will be back again next year 2015.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear get the sun in the afternoon rooms at the front have a sea view.

The lato is a 2 star hotel and it shows, beds are extremely uncomfortable if like us you get a room at rear you have a lovely view of fencing. In evenings the veranda becomes very hot, almost stifling. It is a bit of a journey to get to anywhere from ag/nikolaos. Beaches are terrible and all restaurant menus are the same. Do not recommend..

We discovered the Lato more than 15 years ago, we returned this year after a gap of 9 years.
We found the same warm welcome and excellent staff, always eager to help and to make life easy for you. The feeling that nothing is more important for them than your comfort.
We feel like "Gott im Frankreich"., but I prefer to be there, at the Lato...
We'll be back next year !!!

Room Tip: Front rooms have lovely seaview.

We last stayed here about 8 years ago after transferring from a horrible self catering place and wondered if it was really as good as we thought or if it was just the contrast that made us love it. When we saw that Jet2 holidays come here now (am never travelling with Thomas Cook again) we decided to come for two weeks in May. I emailed to ask if we could have a high floor at the front and the view from our room was amazing. We spent a couple of hours every day sitting on the balcony reading our books and gazing at the beautiful bay. A kettle and mugs are provided which is great. The fridge doesnt work that well but did keep milk and juice cool enough. The bathroom is quite small but that didn't seem to bother us and everything is spotlessly clean. The beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was more limited than in a huge hotel but also much nicer with fresh bread, homemade cake, homemade jams and marmalades and bacon and eggs. Sitting outside eating homemade cake for breakfast was wonderful. Even the coffee from the machine was acceptable. The walk into the centre of town takes about 25 minutes and there are lots of seats along the way. The only niggle we had was with the valuables safe. These aren't in the room but in a corner in the basement and are tiny, only big enough for a passport and money. Most people have cameras and tablets that they might like to lock away. The rooms are very secure and I doubt if they have any problems with theft but all other hotels we have stayed in for at least the last ten years have the safe in the room. Don't let this minor niggle put you off. The Lato is a lovely friendly peaceful hotel.
