WHOOPS, Have I been staying at the wrong hotel. Just returned from 2 weeks at the Lato and read some of the negative reviews, this cant be the same place my partner and I have been staying. We have both experienced 4star 5 star and even 7star hotels. The Lato is 2/3 star so you cannot expect some of the refinements of hotels that would cost you a great deal more. We visited one such 4/5star hotel a bit further along the road from the Lato for a drink. The staff were like programmed robots. What you will get at the Lato is a very clean hotel and friendly staff willing to help where they can. My partners hair straightners stopped working whilst there, straight away one of staff brought her own straightners in from home and let us use them for a week, do you get that in 5 star. We arrived at 10pm on the first night tired and hungry. They dont serve any food in the evening, Yannis straight away offered to ring through a take away from La Strada showed us the menu and sorted it, it was a lovely meal. This man cannot stop smiling wanting to be as helpful as poss, how does he do it, he works all night and I know what its like working nights. The snacks at lunchtime are as good as anywhere, and the chips are to die for. You dont get them that good in England. The rooms may seem a little basic but are clean, they have a fridge which must have been included in price, there was air con, a hair dryer, a balcony to sit out on, the bathroom and shower cubicle are as big as anywhere in this catagory. We had one of the ground floor rooms and it was fine. It is a small hotel and people do gather round the bar/pool area so you can have a friendly chat or do your own thing. Whilst there several different groups arrived that had stayed there previously, a mixture of ages. They must like it. There were babies teenagers young couples there as well as older, everyone seemed to be enjoying the place. There are nice places to eat nearby, Avro best, Kri Kri was disappointing. Its a nice stroll into the centre, so its well placed, the pool is nice and there are area's to get out of the sun. Loads of sun loungers and no fighting for them. It made for a lovely relaxing holiday. The breakfasts are the same continental style plus couple of warm items each day but there is a few things to choose from and get as much as you want. We chose this hotel because we wanted a nice relaxing holiday, somewhere small, which we had. Our rep was a bit of a waste of time but the staff were happy to oblige with best places to eat and visit. Jeanette will even train you in how to pull a pint, however her attempts at a yorkshire accent were a bit feeble. The genuine warmth most of the staff show would be difficult to find in the 5 star. So read all the reviews, take note of the good ones and treat the bad ones with caution, they may have been written by Mr and Mrs Grumpy. My next planned holiday is on a Luxury Cruise, would I return to the Lato, of course. Brian

myself and wife have just returned from the lato after another great time. e-mailed a week before requesting a sea-view. van replied stating that request was noted and would do best to allocate us one. arrived around midnight on the 7th and got allocated room 102, a sea view room. nice one van! this is a small and extremely clean and well run hotel, no ifs or buts and the guests would be a mix of young and old with very very few children. a large number are returning guests including ourselves, with a mix of nationalities.there would be a good selection at breakfast and which is served between 8am and 11am by friendly and pleasant staff. the small pool is well kept and there would be shade from the sun by a large tree beside it and a couple of palm trees which i hid below. within a short walkig distance towards the town you have a small municipal beach a few tavernas including our favourite, the avra. from the hotel to the town centre would be a 15-20 min walk, passing by some bars and shops on the way. have to say that i enjoyed this year better than last year and met some truely lovely people including mo and her family and val and john among others.go there!!

I had booked the Lato because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor and was a bit worried when I looked nearer the date and saw some very negative reviews. However, we really enjoyed our stay there. The room we were allocated was quite small and basic with two twin beds although we did have a reasonable bathroom with a proper shower cubicle which is a nice change from some of the hotels we have stayed in previously in Greece. There was a small balcony which overlooked some scrub land but did have nice views of the mountains. We were a bit disappointed to have to pay extra for the air conditioning and a fridge as it isn't really possible to do without either in that type of heat and would have preferred to have paid extra when booking the holiday although this is probably the fault of Thomas Cook (wanting to tempt you to book by keeping the initial costs down). The buffet breakfasts were adequate with a reasonable amount of choice. We had lunch most days in the hotel and must say that Jeanette's food is lovely and good value (yes, the chips are wonderful!). Her cocktails are also good value during happy hour and very potent! There is a pool area which has lots of sunbeds and trees which provide shade if you want it. The comments about the reception staff very rarely looking up and acknowledging you as you pass are all quite true but they are extremely helpful when you ask them for anything and all the other staff, including the breakfast ladies, Jeanette, the maids, the night porter etc are all really friendly, There is a walk of about 15 minutes into Agios Nikolaos but it is really pleasant in the day as you pass the sea - we tended to walk into town in the night and get a taxi back as it is quite dark and the pavement can be narrow at times (a taxi costs 5 euros each way). Overall, a good hotel, with a friendly atmosphere.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter although no sea view

just reading the latest reviews of lato hotel and thought would point out some facts. as i've said on a prievious report we have been going since 1996. that first year we were given a ground floor room with patio,we were both then in our forties and everybody on that level were in there seventies. we asked to be moved to a top floor and 3 days into our holiday we were told there was a top floor sea view room available, we were having such a good time with the oldies we decided to stay put. we enjoyed it some much we go every year. I ask for the " tower room" now when we book. the room is set back a bit from the rest, has a lovely view across the bay and into town. its not a shoe box as described by one reviewer, its a good enough size, after all your in there to sleep and get ready. the hotel is clean and the staff friendly, they are busy of a day but if you shout kalimera when your going for breakfast they will answer with a smile.its not only a hotel for the older generation but for all ages, my daughter and her husband have been going since they were in there twenties as have a lot of younger people we have met over the years at the hotel, and now my 7 year old grandaughter is a fan of the hotel and resort. the choice for breakfast has a lot more choice than any other 3* we've been in, in greece. if people want a huge selection at breakfast and being made a fuss of everytime there in a hotel, go 5*. if you want a holiday thats typically greek, clean, warm friendly atmosphere, and staff that are happy to help, regardless of what it is, if they can help you they will.then go to this hotel. just remember it is a place of work for them and they cant be expected to look up everytime they hear someone in reception, but say a friendly word and you will get one back. and last but not least the warmth of the residents of aghios nikolaos be they taverna owners or shopkeepers is exceptional.so the comments about staff in restaurants that dont smile i find hard to believe. even places we dont go into always say hello or wave, and have done from the first time we went to the resort. and thats WHY we go back year after year.

Room Tip: second or top floor front of hotel views amazing. but dont all ask for the"" tower room as...

The Lato has long been a favourite venue with us,The small family run hotel is maintained to a high standard with any minor issues dealt with pronto. It is surrounded by gardens complete with pool and (free!!) sun loungers, there is also the added bonus of a large car park. The Hotel provides a nice continental breakfast including Greek yogurt, honey and fresh fruit, a family member also provides home made dishes. The pool bar is a great meeting place and can get lively, during the day excellent snacks are also available. Complete with a 24 hour reception the Lato is a place of relaxation and fun in a safe caring environment.

Room Tip: Rooms with a pool view, also have views of the sea, mountains and Ag Nik Harbour

Two weeks ago my husband, daughter and I returned from our third visit to the Lato and we wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. George, Vangellis and George continue to work extremely hard to make the hotel better and better. I also sent two sets of friends of ours there, neither of them having visited Crete before and they loved it also. Janette and Yannis also continue to do everything in their power to ensure you have a bit of craic at the bar. It was great to see returning guests that we had met in previous years, surely this says a lot about the Lato. Thanks George and the Team, hope the rest of the summer goes well for you all and hopefully see you next year again.

Lato is an adequate hotel for it's price, that the superlatives it gets in reviews sets unrealistic expectations.
The rooms are on the small side of standard size and equipment, with only those facing the road with a view of the sea (the other side has backyards and scienery). The location is great for those with cars - a private parking lot and 3 minutes from the city, near Amoudi beach (walking distance), a few restaurants and a mini market within walking distance.
The pool is nice but there is very little shade around it to accommodate the guests.
