“Brilliant”
Reviewed January 24, 2007

This accomodation is brilliant, have been back a couple of times and parents have three times. Very basic but the people there make up for it, there loveyl, even send us xmas cards every year now. It is just across the road from a little beach cove which is generally quite quiet. its is a walk from the centre of ad nik bt you have two supermarkets and three resturants nearby which are great. The pool area is small but just the right size for 12 apartments, never too fall. Alot of people go back year after year just because its so quiet and relaxing but ag nik a little walk away has everything if you really want it.
Have had brilliant holidays there and would always go back again.

The appartments are dark and gloomy, the kitchen doesn't have windows so is a bit of a fire hazzard. The staff arn't very friendly and there is absolutley nothing to do. There is a supermarket near by but it is extremely expensive. A loaf of bread costs approx £2.
The appartments are quite a distance from the town and if it rains then you are stranded there as there are no bars close enough to run to without getting soaked. The appartments only have the 1 bar and its outside so not much good if it is raining.
We only survived 48 hours here and ended up getting a flight home. Not a holiday i care to experience again. Do NOT GO IN OCTOBER as everything has shut down.

Well! Where do I begin?

Got dropped off at 2.30am, instead of 10.30pm as was expected. No rep to take us up hill to our apartments where reception was closed so we had to find our own way. (This didn't bother us much as we just wanted to get the kids to bed.) Keys were left in door with a note attached.
Got up 7.30, opened the balcony doors, to find the most beautiful sunny day and the views to match. The appartment was wonderfully clean and was overall really happy with our decision to stay here.
Down at reception we were grunted at, which translated as passports were required I guess for identity reasons.
The older of the two ladies who seemed to be the only staff, served us coffee etc, although she seemed to be not very happy, did give us a sample of the cake she had baked herself ,which was a very nice gesture. These ladies were the only ones we had any dealings with, but we found it unusual that they stayed in the lounge at all times talking or eating, never once greating anyone at any time of day. No one was ever present behind the bar which also served as the snack bar and was closed every evening, even reception which stated it stayed open till 12am.
This was pretty much the way it was for our whole weeks stay and then to end it all, our last day it poured down with rain like you've never seen so we couldn't go anywhere until our bus came to collect us at 5.30pm, we had to hang around for hours.
During this time, the rain was lashing down the wind was blowing and we had to ask if we could go in to the lounge area to wait for 5 hours, and although we did, not once were we spoken to or made to feel welcome.
Not sure why this place is not very welcoming, they do have a lovely place here and its just a shame they dont make you feel very comfortable, maybe its because its the end of season? I just dont know.!

I've never done a self catering holiday before, but decided we'd do this as we were going to visit a friend in Aghios Nikolaos and just needed a base. I chose this holiday as Skytours offered free child places up to the age of 16 on this holiday, so for three of us we got flights, accommodation and transfers for what it would have cost for just the flights if we'd booked indepdendently.

When we arrived at Dimitra, the owner was waiting at the roadside to meet us, which was very nice. We were shown to our apartment, which which at the top of quite a steep hill. The apartment was quite basic, eighties decor, but very clean, and very spacious - two double bedrooms and large kitchen/dining room. Travelling with a teenager this was great, as we all had a bit of privacy. Best of all, we had an amazing view of the Mirabello Bay. I think all the apartments did - something you usually have to pay extra for.

There was a small pool at the apartment, and some sun loungers. These weren't adjustable, and there wasn't much shade either. If you plan to sit by the pool all day you might want a pillow or something. There were two beaches just a few hundred yards away - Havania Beach, and the beach at the Mirabello Hotel. You could hire sunbeds for about 4 euros each at both of the these beaches. When we were there is was fairly quite so there wasn't much going on, but I believe there's water sports in high season.

The apartment was about a twenty minute walk from Aghios Nikolaos. You could get a bus from outside the hotel, but we hired a car. We hired it from a company called Kera, which was just a few hundred yards away from the hotel, on the road to AN. It was loads cheaper than the prices the Thomson reps quoted.

We drove to Knossos - got lost, as the directions not clear. If you are planning to drive and you need directions, feel free to email. Knossos was great, but it was very hot when we went, and my teenage daughter had a long face all morning - the highlight for her was seeing a litter of kittens! If you drive to Knossos don't fall for the cowboy car parkers! They do wear cowboy hats, honestly. They pull you over to park and charge about 5 euro, but there's actually a free official car park about fifty metres further along.

If you get the chance go to visit Kritsa. It's a traditional Cretan village, and it's like stepping back 300 years. We also visited Lato, where there are ancient ruins. You got spectacular views of AN when you climbed to the top. In fact, that was the only excursion my daughter enjoyed, and she climbed to the top like a little girl again.

There are a couple of shops close to the apartment where you buy any basics that you will need in the food line. If you hire a car there's an Aldi (or Lidl, not sure) a few minutes drive away - it's signposted on the road to Heraklion - and it was really inexpensive, and sold much better stuff than in England. Wine was really cheap, and you could get Cretan wines from upwards of 3 euro, and they were very drinkable. Apparently, the reason it's not available in England is that it doesn't travel well. We ate out every night, and tried the tavernas across the road from apartment, which were okay. The best restaurant that we went to was called Hrisofillis, which is near the end of the habour in AN. This was really nice, and the menu was a different than the rest, which you recite from memory by the end of the week. Ofou To Lo, which is a bit further along to the left, was very good too. We also went in a restaurant a few doors along from Hrisofillis - can't remember the name, but it's painted bright blue. All these were recommended by our friend, who lives in AN.

We did take one Thomson's excursion - to the west of the island - we'd had enough of driving by then. It was fairly expensive but well worth the money as the guide was so good. We stopped at Chania and Rethimnon, which were both absolutely gorgeous. This excursion also included a stop at the Allied War Cemetery at Soudha Bay. I have to say I found the thought of this a bit weird, but when we got there it very moving and being there brought tears to your eyes.

AN is lovely, very pleasant, and felt very safe. We really enjoyed our visit and definitely intend to return. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

BTW, if you can get up early enough, watch the sunrise from your balcony, or better still, walk down to the Mirabello beach. Amazing.

We stayed here last year and are going back this year. We found it a small comfortable and very friendly place, the owners and their friends were really helpful when my partner lost his phone took us into town ,to the bus station, police station etc and threw in a few other local sights ! The appartments were comfortable and spacious 2 bedrooms, so no one sleeping in the living area. A small bar and pool with loungers of which there seemed to be plenty , great taverna's locally and Havania Beach 5mins away plus a good bus and taxi service onto town if the walk is too much, but hey we all need some exercise to work off the previous nights excesses !

Ag Nik is beautiful! In my opinion the best place to stay on the island. Lovely food, great choice and the harbour is really nice.

Apartments were clean, spacious and basic. However the owners lacked friendliness - theyhardly spoke to you, were hardly seen around and seemed miserable. There aren't any kareoke or quiz nights so it is very quiet. Pool was very small.

Location isn't great, 25 min walk into centre of Ag Nik which gets very boring by the end of the holiday, though you can get a taxi. There is a supermarket quite nearby though.

Apart from the apartments, you will love Ag Nik it is fantastic - great market on through the week where you can buy fruit and veg v. cheap and also bargain clothes.

Apartments - 6/10
Location - 6/10
Resort - 10/10

You will love Ag Nik!
