If anyone thinks this hotel is anything but excellent, they are idiots. The pool area was beautiful, the restaurants was very nice with delicious food. I recommend the moussaka. Breakfast was great, there was something for every taste. The entire hotel area was like a village, and I have never seen such a beautiful hotel area. The rooms were clean, and cosy. The staff was very friendly, and the beach was also top notch. I would recommend this for every family, friends or couples. I have no complaints! Except the fact that I had to leave...

My American family (of Greek descent), which includes 2 boys ages 10 and 7, stayed here for four days in August 2009. By and large the hotel was very nice. The rooms were well-kept and the food was good (but not great, and expensive!) The pool was definitely spectacular and the boys loved it.

A real downside for us was the lack of any Americans at all at the hotel- not that the Brits, Germans, Greeks, Russians, etc. weren't perfectly friendly, it was just lonely not being able to talk with anyone about the NY Yankees!

Our biggest complaint was the price- really for the price we paid I was expecting more of a luxury hotel and this was just a very nice hotel. I didn't hate the hotel at all, but I wouldn't rush back.

We stayed the last 2 weeks of August and travelled with our 17 year old daughter and 8 year old son. The apartments are absolutely fantastic and we cannot fault Candia Park, we had a lovely holiday and are considering going back in 2010.
The transfer time from the airport is one of the longest but well worth it. Following on from a bad holiday experience in Europe we sat on the coach and were holding our breath. It took approximately 2 hours, but the coach was air conditioned so it wasn't too bad. Others at the hotel who had arrived during the night appeared to have had a much longer transfer time than us, so may be worth booking a taxi, and costs approximately 60 Euros.
We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which was inland, not too far from the pool and did think about upgrading to a sea view, however due to the location of the inland room we were able to use the wifi internet connection, allbeit intermittently, so we decided to stay put. The rooms are quite large and although our air conditioning did not work the first night, as soon as we notified reception they sent maintenance down within 5 minutes and it was fixed within the hour. Very clean, maid service daily with towels and bedding changed every 2 / 3 days. The head maid came to see us on the last day and gave us a lovely bottle of Olive Oil on behalf of the hotel, which we thought was a nice touch.
The 2 pools are great and there are ample sunbeds, we generally got to the pool around 10 am and there was lots of choice of where to sit around both pools. Pool towels issued daily on a ticket system.
The beach is a bit pebbly, and the sea was warmer than the pool in the afternoons somedays. Clear sea ideal for snorkelling. Again plenty of sunbeds, although the beach lost the sun in the afternoon.
There is a second rocky beach near to the apartments with sea views and a man made dock with ladders out into the sea that you can jump off, again ideal for snorkelling and a bit quieter round this side, catching the sun all day.
Pool bar is good for ice creams, beer and the strawberry milkshakes which are gorgeous and the staff are friendly and helpful too.
Fili restaurant is nice although when they got very busy the food was not as hot as I would have liked but still okay. They did take away too.
We were self catering so mostly went to Agios Nikolaos to eat at night although we did eat a couple of times in the main restaurant and the food was very nice, although we prefer more choice than the buffet offered each night, hence the self catering.
Entertainment was fair for the clientele but not really for us and definitely not for our 17 year old. We went out most nights to Agios Nikolaos to dine so didn't fully experience the hotel entertainment but the bar area is very well kept and very pleasant for a drink with the staff working exceptionally hard. Cretan night was good fun as was the magic show.
The kids mini club is amazing. The girls that work there are great and really seem to enjoy looking after the kids. They all wear a casual uniform and are very enthusiastic. Our 8 year old came and went as he pleased and activities changed hourly. They open at 1000 hours and run till 2100 hours. Our 8 year old loved going there for face painting, dvd's, discos, rock painting, fishing trips, water polo, mini golf, boules, ghost hunt and much much more.
There are computers on site that you can use (for a fee) and an internet bar with table top football and pool tables, this was for the teens / younger adults, however our teen did not really fancy it on her own.
Agios Nikolaos is great. Very cosmopolitan, friendly and felt very safe. Lots of restaurants and bars to choose from and 8 euros each way in a taxi. The bus is cheaper but can run 20 minutes late from time to time. Our friend walked there and it took 35 minutes although she did say it's not a great walk due to being along the main road.
Candia Park is very clean and very well maintained and Agios Nikolaos is lovely and clean too.
We highly recommend this for families who want a quiet, clean well maintained resort to stay in within reach of a town.
Fantastic holiday.

We went as a family with an eleven year old, self catering with Thomson and had a great time. The resort mainly consists of families from the UK and Germany but no marauding teenagers as their needs are better catered for in the town of Mália.

Try to get a room with a sea view as this really made our holiday and wasn’t any more expensive. There still exists the culture of putting out the towel on the sun-lounger before breakfast but in August there were more than enough good spots to go round. The pool was great, not over crowded and had a lifeguard.

Certainly try to book a hire car and arrange this before you go as costs when you get there can be high. The style of driving, with two wheels on the hard shoulder to allow overtaking, takes a while to get used to but the roads are excellent although the standard of driving is not. Otherwise your a taxi ride away from Ayios and that's about seven euros each time. By hire car even Knossos is well within reach.

Now we get to the excursions where some were good and some not so good. The ‘sail away’ trip where you disappear off on an old wooden sailing boat and swim in the sea was excellent. Good also for children of about 11 years upwards. The boat was called The Annie and the crew were superb. Not cheap but really worth it.

The ‘Go Greek’ night I’d personally give a miss. The trip from Candia Park to the so called authentic Greek village takes approx two hours one way. As you get off the coach you’re told to get your photograph taken with the donkey which you can subsequently purchase for 5 euros. The buffet food in our opinion was of a very poor standard. You are seated out in the open, which can be chilly as you are well above sea level and the location lacks atmosphere.

The entertainment however is very good indeed. Then you have another two hour journey home. It’s expensive because of the distance you have to travel so most of your money goes on the cost of the coach, rather than the food or entertainment. Those picked up nearer pay a lot less.

Overall the facilities at Candia are very good. Staff couldn’t be more helpful, check in and out was a breeze. Thomson rep was very helpful and always available. Even the onsite shop has free compressed air to inflate your lilos. A moment of sanity in a world gone mad.

We did a last minute booking and found this place on the internet. Travelled with First Choice and had a great experience from beginning to end. Candia Park apartments are located in a village type setting around impressive swimming pools and bar/restaurant facilities. Staff were very effiecient and friendly and everywhere was immaculately clean. The complex was out of town but it is easy to get a taxi into Agios Nikolaos (8 Euros). There are some lovely restaurants around the lake there and all are very child friendly.
The First Choice/Thomson rep (Richard) was extremely helpful, he organised car hire for us and told us about good places to visit. He was the best rep we have ever dealt with.
The children loved the holiday and spent a lot of time swimming in the fabulous pools and in the sea. The complex has 2 small beaches (one sandy and 1 pebbley). The apartments were basic but functional and very clean with daily room service.

Please don't hesitate - book a holiday here if you value peace and quiet when you want it, livelines when you want it and all round chill, made to measure holiday. The Village is modelled on a cretan style village - we stayed in a self catering sea view apartment (a blue one!) with the most spectacular views over the sea.
To say self catering is going it a bit as the 'kichen' had a kettle, two gas rings and a fridge. That was it! - Luckily I had no plans to entertain!
The aside, the balcony was the most fantastic extra 'room' - we played cards, dice and had happy evenings there after our nights our at Aghios Niklaos or Elounda or the Taverna/buffet restaurant at the hotel. The exchange rate took us by suprise but that is not the fault of Crete - just came to about 80 - 90 Euros for every meal out...we didn't hold back though!
We were quite suprised that the children had to walk through our room to the bathroom though...also, as their room was the living area, we were also suprised to find that the air conditioning unit was in our room ad there was a noisy extractor fan which funnelled the cool air into the living area - this was quite noisy at night.
That aside - seeing as we feel we are quite 'picky' this holiday was great, best we have ever had. Crete is a fabulous island, this hotel is a fabulous hotel - never felton top of anyone and always plenty of sunbeds etc for all four of us at any time of day. We had the choice of rocky beach, sandy beach or pool when we decided to have a day 'in'. Saw octopus, crabs and colourful fish whilst snorkelling within 5 metres of the shore. SUPERB! Thank you Candia Park for making this a memorable, relaxing, invigorating holiday for our family!
I would go back - only got the centre and the western side of Crete to explore now and need to see those before we do - going back to Crete next year though!

Have just returned from a great 2 week stay at Candia Park. I would agree with the general sentiments from the vast majority of reviewers who rate this hotel highly. In addition I would like to add the following observations and tips.
This hotel seems to work best for self caterers who intend to hire a car, and half board who want to chill. Without a car or HB, the taxi fares are going to rack up, and the on-site shop is limited and the only one anywhere close by. We were in the HB & chill category and were pleasantly suprised that we were not bored by the hotels resturants after two weeks especially considering that we had vegetarians in our party.
The accommodation layout is exceptional, and the rooms themselves adequate.
The negatives were mostly minor; some wobbly wooden handrails and some litter on the beach and grass sunlounger areas (there are plenty of bins - so unfortunately the origin of the problem was lazy guests). The only major issue for us was outside the control of the hotel - persistent barking from local dogs! If our routine was to include SC evening meals on the patio/balcony then this would have been a big issue.
Where experience exceeded our expectations concerned staff. All were friendly but also efficient. Reception, maintenance and especially the resturant staff worked hard to give a quality of service to justify the high "star" ratings used by the holiday companies.
The benefit to First Choice / Thomsons customers of having an English rep who is now a full time resident nearby cannot be overstated as Richard went "the extra mile" to assist guests.
We would definitely like to return soon, and if so, it would be nice to here that the entrance fee to Knossos was now included in the not inconsiderable amount charged by FC/Thomsons for their excursion.
