This place is not about style, it's about getting a bargain! Our room was huge and had a lovely water view balcony. Lots of sitting and storage space. Just keep in mind, water view, means some street noise. A manageable walk to the port. Some hallways smelled a bit smoky.

We booked for a long weekend as a base to explore the surrounding area and we were pleasantly surprised. We had booked full board to make life easy and even though we arrived after midnight, reception informed us that a cold plate had been prepared and placed in the fridge in the room for us ... helpful and welcoming. Indeed the vast majority of the staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful.
The hotel is clean well presented with a variety of facilities that are well maintained and I was particularly impressed with the attached cafe/bar 'Cafe del Mar' .. Thanks Mariana! There is also a poolside cafe/bar for snacks and drinks to accompany your sunbathing and reading.
The breakfast was more than adequate with a wide choice to suit most lifestyles and was an excellent start to the day. There was also the opportunity to choose between eating inside or outside which was nice. Evening meal was a hot buffet style with a fair choice to suit most tastes but here I have one surprising criticism. There was a total absence of seafood in any of the starters or salads which was a disappointing surprise and considering the location, unfathomable.
The hotel location was excellent opposite the sea, on a main bus route and within easy access of the main town's shops and facilities which are numerous and varied. Agios Nikolaos is definitely worth a visit even if you are staying elsewhere and as it is the main admin capital of the Lasithi area, has the answer to all of your needs.
Our room was a twin with a balcony and the views are uplifting. The room was clean and tidy but had no coffee and tea making facilities which was a little disappointing.
As a main holiday destination hotel or as a base for further exploration I would definitely recommend this place.

Room Tip: Sea View room is worth it

We always research hotels well before we stay and this one exceeded expectations. Stayed for 2 weeks in October - the weather was fantastic (a little too hot during our second week). Had a room on 7th floor with fantastic sunrises and views over the bay and harbour. Loved watching the cruise ships arriving and departing. Food extremely well presented for a buffet - loads of choice to suit all.
Staff were extremely welcoming - we ate outside each breakfast and dinner and loved the friendly service from Eva and Maria - thank you.

The hotel is in a great location - we did not hire a car but noted that there were plenty of free parking spaces on the sea front. Buses to Elounda and beyond stopped outside the hotel and on both occasions we used them dropped us off at the door!

Taxis can be ordered from reception and always arrived within three minutes.

Rooms are a little dated but we e- mailed ahead and asked for mattress-toppers which were great on the hard bases plus a room on a high floor to take advantage of the views.
Walks along the promenade are flat - there is a lovely walk along the seafront to the main shopping area - we found some great bars and coffee shops locally.

Suggest that you connect the hotel direct if you have any specification requests - we booked our stay through Thomson and never met our rep!

Room Tip: Definitely book a sea view on a high floor.

We arrived at 0100. The first people to meet were the Giorgos on reception and the porter. They were very welcoming. We were then taken to our room. A cold plate was wating for us in the fridge- because we had missed evening meal. This was more than satisfactory. We had a look outside on the balcony- we had a beautiful sea view which we had been upgraded to. Beds were good-had a good nights sleep. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice. Evening meal was also buffet style, with plenty of choice All the staff were extremely polite and helpful. Eva and the head waiter from Heraklion were particularly nice and always went out of their way to speak to us. My one small criticism would be, rooms looked a little tired, particularly carpet. I always prefer tiles - they are more hygienic. This did not spoil the stay Would stay again.

Impressed with the reviews, we booked a week at Hermes, we had a great holiday in Crete, the hotel was in a brilliant location, and right on the seafront, beautiful views day and night, the downside for us, was the food - although plenty of it, almost every day/night you had the much the same choices, and most of it was only luke warm. (The fresh cooked omlettes at breakfast were gorgeous) The staff were really great and very hardworking always with a smile and eager to please. The room was dated and could do with an update, but was very clean. There was an itinerary of activities but these did not always take place. Average age group was about 60+, which was fine for us, but we did feel sorry for the few children there as they were surrounded by us older people most of the time. We would go back to Crete, and same area, but not sure we would stay at the Hermes again.

Room Tip: Definately go for a sea view, a couple we met were at the back and cook see into a residents place.

This holiday was everything we had hoped for. Hotel situated right on sea front. Had front facing room with balcony, overlooking bay, islands and harbour to one side (cruisers and fishing boats coming and going). Watched sun rise over mountains. We were on 7th floor (2 floors above swimming pool/dining terrace which is on 5th floor). Plenty of loungers and umbrellas. Room good, pool towels provided. Quick response to request for extra pillows. Plenty of variety at Buffet meals, different theme each night. Mostly 60+ which suited us. Some light entertainment in pool bar each evening if required. Staff all very helpful, most speak english. Small beach outside hotel, loungers (2.5 euros, umbrellas 2 euros for day - can come and go) Water crystal clear, pebble beach slopes steeply to rocks, great for snorkling, saw loads of fish. Beach accessible from inside hotel, tunnel under road. Town 5 min walk, lots of tavernas/shops/harbour. Weather was between 24-28C. Had 4 trips out: Semi sub boat, well worth 15 euros each, about 1 1/2 hrs. Saw moray eels and many more fish. Happy Train trip - excursion 3 (there are different routes and costs) - 20 euros each,(4 1/2 hrs) which takes you to local Olive Farm (extra 1.50 euros each) very interesting, then on long ride up through back of Nikolaos on up mountain road, spectacular views, stopping at old Byzantine church (don't pay to go in there, charge 3 euros each.. nothing to see!) then on up to Krista village, very typically greek, lots of tourist gift shops and tavernas. (steep hill). Boat trip to Spinalonga (4 1/2 hrs) 15 euros each. Out across bay and behind several islands to a quite secluded bay where boat stops for swimming 1/2 hr, then on round islands to Spinalonga. Tour guide takes you first bit, then left to wander for about 1hr. Return trip slightly different route. Saw flying fish and turtle. Lastly took local bus to Elounda, about 15 mins, very pretty bay/beach/harbour/tavernas/shops. 1.60 euros each way each.
There is a small sandy beach 10 mins walk from hotel in bay, or another other side of town.
Transfer time from airport about 1 hr but stops to drop off or pick up along way, so takes about 1 1/2 hrs. Mountains everywhere you look. Loved this holiday and would recommend it to anyone wanting quiet getaway.

Room Tip: Definately worth pay extra for front facing with balcony, choose top floor (9) if available, furthes...
