Impressed with the reviews, we booked a week at Hermes, we had a great holiday in Crete, the hotel was in a brilliant location, and right on the seafront, beautiful views day and night, the downside for us, was the food - although plenty of it, almost every day/night you had the much the same choices, and most of it was only luke warm. (The fresh cooked omlettes at breakfast were gorgeous) The staff were really great and very hardworking always with a smile and eager to please. The room was dated and could do with an update, but was very clean. There was an itinerary of activities but these did not always take place. Average age group was about 60+, which was fine for us, but we did feel sorry for the few children there as they were surrounded by us older people most of the time. We would go back to Crete, and same area, but not sure we would stay at the Hermes again.

Room Tip: Definately go for a sea view, a couple we met were at the back and cook see into a residents place.

This holiday was everything we had hoped for. Hotel situated right on sea front. Had front facing room with balcony, overlooking bay, islands and harbour to one side (cruisers and fishing boats coming and going). Watched sun rise over mountains. We were on 7th floor (2 floors above swimming pool/dining terrace which is on 5th floor). Plenty of loungers and umbrellas. Room good, pool towels provided. Quick response to request for extra pillows. Plenty of variety at Buffet meals, different theme each night. Mostly 60+ which suited us. Some light entertainment in pool bar each evening if required. Staff all very helpful, most speak english. Small beach outside hotel, loungers (2.5 euros, umbrellas 2 euros for day - can come and go) Water crystal clear, pebble beach slopes steeply to rocks, great for snorkling, saw loads of fish. Beach accessible from inside hotel, tunnel under road. Town 5 min walk, lots of tavernas/shops/harbour. Weather was between 24-28C. Had 4 trips out: Semi sub boat, well worth 15 euros each, about 1 1/2 hrs. Saw moray eels and many more fish. Happy Train trip - excursion 3 (there are different routes and costs) - 20 euros each,(4 1/2 hrs) which takes you to local Olive Farm (extra 1.50 euros each) very interesting, then on long ride up through back of Nikolaos on up mountain road, spectacular views, stopping at old Byzantine church (don't pay to go in there, charge 3 euros each.. nothing to see!) then on up to Krista village, very typically greek, lots of tourist gift shops and tavernas. (steep hill). Boat trip to Spinalonga (4 1/2 hrs) 15 euros each. Out across bay and behind several islands to a quite secluded bay where boat stops for swimming 1/2 hr, then on round islands to Spinalonga. Tour guide takes you first bit, then left to wander for about 1hr. Return trip slightly different route. Saw flying fish and turtle. Lastly took local bus to Elounda, about 15 mins, very pretty bay/beach/harbour/tavernas/shops. 1.60 euros each way each.
There is a small sandy beach 10 mins walk from hotel in bay, or another other side of town.
Transfer time from airport about 1 hr but stops to drop off or pick up along way, so takes about 1 1/2 hrs. Mountains everywhere you look. Loved this holiday and would recommend it to anyone wanting quiet getaway.

Room Tip: Definately worth pay extra for front facing with balcony, choose top floor (9) if available, furthes...

My wife and I have just returned from three nights stay at the Hermes Hotel and thank goodness it wasn't any longer. It was impossible to get a decent nights sleep due to the fact that although the temperature during the day was 27-30 degrees and the bedroom was like an oven, the air con was switched off. We achieved some relief by opening the widow and the bedroom door to the passage which allowed some air movement but meant we couldn't sleep after about 6am due to traffic noise
We discussed the matter twice with the front desk ( where the air con was on all day !) and we were told that it is hotel policy to switch of the air conditioning at the end of September. We requested that an exception be made in view of the hot weather to no avail. This is essentially a package holiday hotel and maybe if we had had a rep to support us we may have received better treatment. Independent travellers beware.

Dear Michael,

We are very grateful for the review you wrote. It is our goal to achieve excellence in our daily work and no one better than our guests can indicate us how to improve day after day.

To continue, we apologize that due to the temperatures you felt uncomfortable in your room. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that although it is properly announced that the air conditioning is switched off on the 15th of September, we try to be proactive and understand that on some days even in autumn our guests find it too hot to sleep. Therefore, as soon as a few guests enquire whether it could be switched on, we activate the central system so that in the evenings and nights the rooms can be refreshed. As at the end of September we didn´t become any other requests to put it on, we decided not to do so as it would not be in accordance with our philosophy which includes the preservation and respect for the environment while maintaining a proper environmental management system committed to continuous improvement and preventing wastage of energy as a challenge for all Iberostar workers.

Hopefully we can fulfill your expectations in the near future, and we stay to your entire disposal for any request you might have regarding coming vacations. It is our goal to make all of our guests enjoy of a splendid holiday, therefore we are always willing to guide you in our call center or through our webpage to make sure that you book in a Iberostar hotel that can make all your wishes come true.

Faithfully yours,

We have used the Hermes Hotel about 14 times …so it goes without saying that we like it, yes! It has changed hands and is now “The Iberostar Hermes” and a few things have changed, not all for the good, dependant on your personal views, but it remains a good hotel with nice staff in a great location, good food etc.
I have just posted to give folks some tips, a few I just learned myself.
1. The hotel is most definitely suited to couples or mature people and not suited to young kids, reasons.. 2 minutes walk from the town and not on a sandy beach.
2. The view is fabulous hence ..pay the extra for a sea view room ..aprox £140 per room.
3. transfer from Heraklion airport on bus is about 2 ½ hours so we always hire a car to travel about, but, just found out that a bus is available outside the hotel every hour which goes to i.e. Elounda for under 2 euro.
4. Trip to Spinalonga from Agios Nikolaos is abot 35 to 40 euro for which you get 50 minutes travel on the boat, 1hour on Spinalonga, 30 minutes swimming and another 50 minutes return on the boat.
If you can travel to Plaka (about 20 minutes in a car) its 8 euro return! 10 minutes on a boat, stay on the island as long as you want as there is a boat back to Plaka every 30 minutes.

enjoy The Hermes and Agios Nikolaos and try and see more of the island.

This is my second review of this hotel having been with a friend last time decided to visit with husband..as he is used to top 5* luxury hotels and I did feel and still do feel rooms are a bit tired and bathrooms need upgrading...was unsure if he'd love the place as much as I did.

Needn't have worried if anything he was fine with the room itself (actually I was the one thinking even more tired re decor in rooms)..and he adored the rooftop pool and the location of the hotel and we had one of the best holidays ever chilling out.

The food was absolutely outstanding..I have never liked buffet food...but this time even I was impressed by the quality and choice...the breakfasts have improved... terrific choice they now make eggs freshly fried...get them first then add bacon to stay hot...the omelette is also excellent time it so its just been done and take a slice and lovely and hot which was my main minor quibble food tended to be almost cold before. You can also boil your own egg the way you like it ..

We tended to eat outdoors ...looking at the stunning views...and the service was outstanding Eva was especially kind always found us a table.

We for the first time in many years went all inclusive..as we occasionally like to sleep late the fact you could have continental breakfast at 10am till 11am meant no stress...although we did tend to go in time for the hot breakfast lovely to have the option.

Lunchtime they do hot fresh fish cooked on the grill so if a bit stuffed from breakfast could have salad with this and a nice carafe of wine. Dinner also exceptionally good again carvery of some meat or fish...plenty of choices.

The entertainment is something I usually give a miss but velina and team were great fun and the bar staff were great too...loved their pina coladas...and even the local G&T's were good. The greek night was particularly good...BBQ too.

The bedrooms are not luxurious....but the view makes up for that IMO...and I didn't bother with mattress topper and didn't find the bed too hard at all..shower worked well....but I do think they need an upgrade tiling just a bit grubby although cleaned daily.

My biggest bug last time visited was the whole early start for sunbeds..there were lots more of them this time...and never had a problem ..don't know if its because we were low season ..but enjoyed not having to rise early to bag a spot.

I love the position of this hotel just a few minutes to the harbor and lagoon and shops feel very safe here..I was happy walking around myself while my husband enjoyed a beer.

Many people go back year after year ...I will be one of them....already planning my next trip.

Room Tip: I think most sea view rooms are good..I have been in 444 and this time 337..and they have a large se...

This is my second visit to the Hermes and it did not dissapoint. Had a bit of a shaky start as the room had not been made up on my arrival, 6.30pm. I was asked to go for drinks/dinner while the room was cleaned. It would have been nice to have freshened up first but never mind. Later that evening I was given a basket of fruit and a bottle of wine as a goodwill gesture. The next day I was also given a kettle and tea /coffee. This apparently is only given to special guests !! The rest of the holiday was fabulous. Food great, location superb and the staff could not have been more helpful. The rooms are a little tired, TV like a matchbox, carpets threadbare in places and pillows like crispbreads... ask for more as only given two as standard !but who goes on holiday to spend all day in the room. Average age of guests is about 65 so at only 55 I felt like a youngster. So no late raucous nites as everone seems to be tucked up in bed by 12pm. I love it and I will be returning next year. Oh I also got on cake on my birthday.. nice touch

Room Tip: Definately choose a sea room, costs extra but stunning views

We went to the Hermes Hotel on 16 September for two weeks. It is a beautiful hotel with amazing views, wonderful staff and great food.

My only complaints were 1 our room 121 needs a new carpet, it was marked and rippled like the bottom of the sea!! secondly there were not enough hand rails around the pool area and also going down to the bar, i had recently had two knee operations and had to walk up the many steps very carefully. There were a lot of older people there who i spoke to and agreed please put more "hand rails around this area"

Otherwise a great time was had my me and my husband though we did pay for a sea view which was obstructed by some lovely trees, and unfortunately we did have some pigeons nesting above our balcony which left a mess every day (the maids did clean this up every day) This was nobodys fault we were just unlucky where they decided to nest!

Thankyou Hermers for a lovely stay.
