“Excellent in every way!”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

Our holiday started with a bit of confusion. When we arrived, we were told that since the hotel hasn't really opened yet, the availability may be restricted. To compensate for that, we were offered a free lunch at the hotel restaurant. Turns out that the restricted menu was more extensive than the full menu in many other restaurants.
The staff was very attentive, friendly and always had a smile for their guests. As the hotel filled up, that did not change at all. The room was clean, well maintained and room service also did a very good job indeed. The spa is not the biggest I have ever seen but it does the job.
Also, we have tried several restaurants in the area of Agios Nikolaos and we were nothing but disappointed. Granted, the hotel restaurants are more expensive but definitely worth the price. I'd go back anytime even if not for more than 5-7 days as the possibilities for activities are limited (in the area and the hotel). A big "thank you" to the St. Nicolas Bay staff who made our stay very memorable and enjoyable.

I'll go into detail in a minute, but I have to start with the smile. Maybe the staff were told to be friendly to their hotel guests, but then no doubt all hotel managers say that. At the Saint Nicolas Bay Hotel the smile is for real. All, and I mean ALL the staff are friendly and seem genuinely pleased to be working at the hotel, and to be able to be of service to the hotel guests. It makes such a difference.
You only need to google the hotel to see the wonderful situation on Crete's beautiful north coast, and to see how attractive the hotel itself is: each walk to the breakfast or dinner area is a walk past little lawns and flowering bushes. The private bay has clean sand and safe water for the young'uns. I went there every morning to watch the sunrise.
The restaurants -whether at breakfast, noon, or night - give a varied menu with a good wine list. The waiters are ultra-efficient but appear not to be in a hurry. And if you have any special request, nothing seems to be too much trouble.
I love the hotel because it is so peaceful; none of the noise and stress of a big hotel. And it is small enough for you to keep to yourself, or to meet the other guests.
Naturally enough I am booking two weeks again this year.

Room Tip: Rooms depend on how much you are ready to spend. All seem to have a beautiful view, either out to se...

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for pointing out the Management philosophy of St. Nicolas Bay which is to welcome and treat clients as a guest in their own home.
Kindly be assured that you will find the same home away from home ambience whenever you will honor us again with your booking.

Fantastic scenery and great spa. rooms were clean but not a great size for a suite, staff could not do enough to help you whatever you asked! Lovely buffet breakfast and nice fresh food in the other restaurants but was pricey! For a few minutes walk or a short taxi ride you could pick up some good food at half the price.
One of the most beautiful places I have stayed and they were great with my 7 month old

We recently stayed in this hotel for two weeks, we loved the hotel and all the staff were very friendly. It is a smaller hotel so you do get to know the other visitors. The hotel has two pools and a small private beach with a walkway. The beach is nice and settled for little ones. The hotel has three restaurants with lovely food in all, a wee bit on the expensive side though. Only 5 mins taxi to town though.

We had a double room which was ok, but quite small. I know the villas are better but are more expensive. Would recommend though and loved the area.

Room Tip: Try to get upgraded the manager is lovely

We stayed here in October 2012, with our 3 children: 9, 7 & 2yrs, for one week. It was one of our best family vacations ever. The hotel is absolutely charming, & the staff bent over backwards to be helpful. We were in a villa on a half board basis, with dinner at one restaurant (half buffet, half served), and a 20% discount at the other restaurants. I had really wanted to try the other restaurants, especially the little taverna, which looked like something out of a movie set in the evenings. But the food was so good (& I normally hate buffets), & they were so accommodating with the children, that we ended up eating there every night. The villas, with their own pools, are amazing, and have direct/private access to the ocean as well - brilliant for jumping off the rocks into the ocean (husband & 9 year old son), and safe ladder access for mama and little girls. Great snorkelling in the clear, clear, clear ocean. Because we had our own pool, we didn't use the main hotel pools, but they did look nice. The beach is perfect with little kids, & they've set up the lounge chairs, on the beach, as well as on areas cut into the rocks, so it never feels crowded. Water sports center is good (jet skis are pricey). The kids had been looking forward to the kids club, but it's actually set up for very young children. They didn't need it though, as the weather was absolutely perfect & they were all in the water anyway. The hotel showed open air movies at night & they also had hundreds of DVDs to borrow, which were free of charge. The hotel is in a great location, between Elounda (an English bookshop is there) & Aghios Nikolaus. All in all, we loved it, have told all our friends about it, and are planning to return. A big thank you to Costas (the general manager) & all of his wonderful staff for making us feel so at home. Even our little 2 yr old Emma was greeted everywhere by name, including the kitchen chefs! It's the little things that set such hotels apart from the big chains. We've stayed at slick & chic Shangri-La's & Four Seasons; but they don't have the charm of St. Nicolas Bay.

We stayed here for a week in october. I loved everything about this hotel. Its quite small but spread out really nicely with pretty pathways all over full of bouganvillea and olive trees, stunning. The grounds are well maintained but not overly manicured which added to the charm and character of the place.
The room we had (219) was a nice size with a lovely sea view. Loved the contemporary decor. Very clean. Only criticism would be the shower curtain, would have preferred a glass screen.
We were bed & breakfast which was lovely, outside in the morning sun, very peaceful. In fact the whole place was so quiet and serene. We only ate in the hotel at lunch times, (approx 40 euros for 2x lunches 2x beers 1x water) so cant comment on the evening restaurants. The food we had was nice no complaints. We went to the Minotaur restaurant for the weekly champagne party with the management and it looks stunning in the evening! Absolutely beautiful (see picture). The drinks were expensive but we expected this, 10 euros for a gin & tonic!
The location was just right in terms of distance from town. We ate in many of the popular restaurants rated on trip advisor, some less then 5 mins walk from the hotel. Had some really great meals in Avra, Piato, Embassy, Pegalos, Knossos, Kri Kri. Got totally hooked on meze! Delicious. We weren't that impressed with Avli contrary to reviews on here. The local house wine in all the restaurants was fantastic, and at roughly 3.50 euros for half litre, it was great value too. Definitely recommend that. The restaurants next to the lake are more pricey but you cannot beat having a drink there at sunset before dinner in the evening before moving on to eat. It really is so beautiful, you can not tire of it. We loved the town, its buzzing with atmosphere. You get great views of the lake if you walk up the steep road at the side near Zygos. Stunning.
The weather was also perfect and was nudging 30 every day. The sea was warm and crystal clear.
We went to Elounda by taxi early one morning, (10mins) and got the boat (lots of them running every 30mins) to Spinalonga which used to be a Leper Colony amongst other things over the years. The boat is 10euros and you can return whenever you like. There is a small fee of 2euros to walk round it when you get there, payable at the ticket office. It was really interesting and spooky and once again great views. Would recommend. The tour operators offer excursions lasting 4 hours or so with guided walks etc.. But to be honest we did it ourselves and found it to be more enjoyable. It only takes an hour to get round the whole thing then we were back on the next boat to have lunch by the water at the Ferryman Taverna, amazing views again. We were thinking of staying in Elounda before we booked but Im glad we picked Agios Nikoloas now. Elounda was lovely but there is more going on in Agios Nikoloas which suited us, also a lot more choice in bars/restaurants.
We really did have such a great time here, and would highly recommend both the hotel and the town. We loved the balance it gave us having the luxury of the hotel alongside the great value restaurants and buzzing town in the evenings. If you stayed in at the hotel the whole time I'm pretty certain it will cost you an arm and leg, but not only that it would be a shame to miss out on all the town has to offer.
Fantastic place and we hope to return one day.

Our honeymoon here was everything we dreamed it would be. The resort was beautiful and the staff were excellent...nothing was too much trouble. The honeymoon package included a lovely meal in the Minataur restaurant, room service breakfast whenever we wanted it, and petals on the bed. Our suite overlooked the sea, and was very comfortable
