Read about Itanos in one of our guidebooks and chose it as our lunch spot on our one day in Crete. When we arrived the inside restaurant was full and full of crying babies so we asked if we could sit at one of the tables across the narrow street.
The waiter came out and let us know what they had to offer that day. No menu was fine with us as the waiter was patient in explaining what the offerings were. We chose so many that he said "ok, that should be enough!" He was right and we were happy he didn't let us over order.
We had a beautiful Greek salad to start. The cheese was soft and fresh and the vegetables tasted like they came out of a garden not a store. The banana peppers were so fresh and flavorful we were fighting over them!
A basket of bread was brought and we used it to dip in everything.
Next we had the moussaka which was out of this world, the stuffed tomato and pepper which were equally as good and the meatballs which were good but had a layer of underdone meat at the bottom. We overlooked that small detail as the rest of the meal was so good.
The service was good and the waiter seemed pleased that we were so happy with our meal.
Surprised my some of the negative reviews as we had a memorable lunch here and have looked back at the pictures of that Greek salad many times already!
