Read about Itanos in one of our guidebooks and chose it as our lunch spot on our one day in Crete. When we arrived the inside restaurant was full and full of crying babies so we asked if we could sit at one of the tables across the narrow street.
The waiter came out and let us know what they had to offer that day. No menu was fine with us as the waiter was patient in explaining what the offerings were. We chose so many that he said "ok, that should be enough!" He was right and we were happy he didn't let us over order.
We had a beautiful Greek salad to start. The cheese was soft and fresh and the vegetables tasted like they came out of a garden not a store. The banana peppers were so fresh and flavorful we were fighting over them!
A basket of bread was brought and we used it to dip in everything.
Next we had the moussaka which was out of this world, the stuffed tomato and pepper which were equally as good and the meatballs which were good but had a layer of underdone meat at the bottom. We overlooked that small detail as the rest of the meal was so good.
The service was good and the waiter seemed pleased that we were so happy with our meal.
Surprised my some of the negative reviews as we had a memorable lunch here and have looked back at the pictures of that Greek salad many times already!

I ordered greek meet balls and received two big hamburger (not well cooked). The service was so poor that we ask each other if it wasa joke... But it wasn't! They didn't have the coffee machine for Greek coffee!!!

We had eaten here approximately 10 years ago and had a lovely meal. However, this time it was truly awful. We should have guessed that, at 9.00 pm, an empty restaurant is a sure sign that things are not quite right.
The only choice was "greek salad, lamb, meatballs, moussaka". The good points firstly - we had the Greek salad which was fresh and tasty. However, the moussaka and meatballs were just about warm and edible. The meatballs floated in a nondescript, faintly red, greasy liquid. If it was supposed to be soutzoukakia, it was dire!
It would require Sherlock Holmes to find the meat in the moussaka!
What is remarkable is that this place is recommended in a number of well known guide books.
As for the wine, the least said the better. It was brown and smelt like sherry with "bits" floating in it.
Beware!

Every time we go to Crete we make a point of eating here. Make sure that you choose from the dishes at the back of the restaurant, rather than the menu. As all food is made fresh each day, what they have will change from day to day. The waiters will explain what each dish is.

Excellant food, try the Mousakka or meatballs . THE BEST EVER! The roasted potatoes with herbs and lemon are also a highlight.

Our experience here was a bit odd.
We were the only ones in the restaurant, which is nice and rustic. When it came to order, the owner didn't bring us any menus, and when we asked for them, he muttered something about the food always changing so they didn't use menus. I found that a bit weird.

We figured a safe bet would be a Greek salad to start with. It was delicious, but didn't come with any plates! So we made a right mess of the table, but the owner didn't seem to be bothered.
Anyway he said they had chicken, lamb and some fish on special. So we had chicken and lamb, which was just basically that, in a sauce with rice. It came to us really quick, and I thought it must have been held hot in the kitchen already. I say hot, it wasn't hot at all which was worrying, and I wonder how long it had been there, as there was no other diners so can only assume it had been sitting for quite a while. It tasted ok though.

When we got back to our favourite bar (Toedeledokie), the owner there told us that Itanos serves food the old fashioned way, and you have to go to the kitchen and pick your food from the choices there! Alas the guy didn't tell us this while we were there!
All in all a strange experience, not sure if I'd return.
