“Great dining option in downtown Athens!”
Reviewed September 15, 2011

My sister discovered this lovely restaurant and proposed it for a calm and tasteful break. The atmosphere was casual and the staff very polite and welcoming. It is actually situated in the center of the city, in the center of almost everything going on around and very close to many of the city’s attractions and museums, such as the University, the Academy, the National Library, the Numismatic Museum, and the municipality’s cultural centre. It is also close to the main shopping areas of downtown Athens, so it could be a perfect choice for a break from sightseeing or shopping, especially during a hot summer day.
After being seated, the waiter explained to us all the day specials, which actually were a new, modern, and fresh approach to ordinary mainstream greek recipes, including well known materials used throughout the greek cuisine, such as vegetables, squid and other seafood, veal, and pulses. All the main dishes are served with a complimentary selection of rice, pasta, baked potatoes, or salad, from which the waiter is always eager to propose the best to join your main selection.
You can also choose from a great variety of fresh salads and other appetizers that follow both modern western trends and that new approach to the simple, traditional greek cuisine.
We didn’t try any of the deserts, as we preferred to resume our walk around the area and try an ice-cream at one of the many cafes around Exarcheia square.
I would say that the prices were reasonable, keeping a good relation between cost and quality of service, and would certainly propose it to anyone, both visiting and living in Athens, as a great choice for a lovely lunch between friends in a casual atmosphere.
I hope that I will discover more such places to write about in the future!

“Simple, nice food, friendly, but in prime time hard to find place to sit”
Reviewed January 21, 2011

The place is situated in beautiful Exarchia (no wonder I live there!) and I have tried everything around. I find the place nice and cheap with good food and large portions, nice atmosphere and very friendly staff.

The only problem is that it may be find to find a table on Saturdays, especially during Greek lunchtime, ie 13-16.

“Gets you away from awful taverna stodge”
Reviewed November 2, 2010

Question.......how long can one dine out in 'traditional Greek tavernas' before becoming thoroughly bored with stews, casseroles, Moussaka and more Moussaka? Answer.......about 3 days as far as we're concerned, and this is at least 4 days less than most tourists spend in Greece. Sure tavernas have charm, but its soon wears off, especially at the prices they think they can charge. On the contrary, Fasoli is modern Greek cooking in the modern area of Athens. Its not a luxury place. Indeed it looks a bit like some kind a 'formula' restaurant, very open plan and sited on a corner (Ippokratus and Stoufa) in Kolonaki. It has weird novelty chairs in the outside seating area that adjust to the slope on which the street is built. There's a touch of Italian about it, including a range of fabulous risottos. You can still have your traditional Greek bits & pieces if you want, but the difference here is that its cooked to order (you can see the chefs at work in their 'cage') and very fresh. Service is great, and the prices are half what you'd pay in a taverna (we paid just 28 euro for meals for 4 with wine). Its a snip and a real alternative for eating out in Athens. I think Fasoli has a sister restaurant in Plaka but I cant vouch for that one.
