Pro's: Clean, modern, large bathroom with tub, fairly quiet, close to metro and Victoria Square (many restaurants)

Con's: Neighbourhood looks sketchy but we never felt unsafe, view from balcony (courtyard side) was not great

I can not stress enough, do not stay here, no matter the price.

We had a 3 night stay but left after the 1st night and paid for a second hotel while losing the nonrefundable money we spent on Centrotel for nights 2 and 3. That's how bad. (Other hotel suggestions at end of review.)

My fiance and I did a long multi island and mainland tour of Greece. We have visited 10 places and stayed at many hotels, including 2 others in Athens and 2 others on the mainland, so we have a comparison and can give a quick honest review.

Good: Building lobby nice. Rooms spacious. Bathtubs are nice.

Bad: Incredibly shady and dangerous neighborhood.

Worst: No individual controls for the AC heat in each room. The rooms have fake controls but they do nothing. We discovered this after coming down to the desk and asking for another room to management that they have a central system with one temp for each room.

Then the next day we found out the AC system for the hotel was turned off during our stay! Our room was 80 degrees at night!! Other guests checking out complained of the same thing. Terrible!

The fan blew smokey air from inside the building. We could open the door for fresh air if we preferred to hear lots of street noise, car alarms, and see the sun rise.

Not worth it at all. Even at $1 I would never stay again. I've given most places I've stayed 5 and 4 star reviews so this is not my nature to complain.

Instead go stay near Acropolis at Plaka or Hermes hotels. Not expensive, and those have amazing location. Great service. The extra cost is worth it in saved cab fairs and enjoyment of facilities.

Nothing but good things to say about this gem of a hotel in Athens. After a long haul from the other side of the world the warm and genuine greeting from proprietor Vassilis and the staff was a real pleasure. The welcoming complimentary beer on our balcony was a delightful added treat.
The room was bright, spacious, well appointed and meticulously clean and the bathroom was absolutely 5 star.
The location was far more user friendly than we had expected, with the metro only a block away and access to all points very straightforward, including the airport. The neighbourhood may seem a little dodgy at first but in fact was not the slightest problem, even late at night.
Also delighted to say the Athens taxi drivers have really cleaned up their act in the last couple of years and were helpful and courteous at all times. A taxi ride to the town centre was about €3.50 on the meter.
The only gripe I could possibly have have is that the bed is seriously firm.. I mean industrial strength hard and the pillows are pretty unforgiving too. However this won't stop us from being back again, or from recommending The Centrotel to our travelling mates.
All In all this hotel punches well above its weight in value for money.

Room Tip: Our room on the third floor facing the street with balcony was terrific and we weren't bothered by any street noise.

Me and my wife stayed for 5 nights and we enjoyed our stay at Centrotel. While the area seems a little shady at first, we did not encounter any danger at all during our stay. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, and our room was clean and comfortable. They also upgraded us free of charge to a room with a balcony as soon as we arrived. The hotel looks to be fairly new and modern as well. The area is quiet and very close to the Victoria Metro station (5 mins on foot). While breakfast was not included in the room rate, it was still a bargain for the price we paid. Plus there are several restaurants in the area to eat breakfast from (we visited the nearby Everest every morning which has good coffee and breakfast at a very affordable price).

I spent May 2nd -May 4th, just two night in Athens. The hotel is very lovely for the price that I paid. It's about a 35 minute taxi ride from the airport to the hotel and cost 37 euros. You can also take the metro from the airport to the hotel, but it would take about an hour (because you have to switch trains) but it would have been MUCH cheaper. My cousin and I didn't feel like spending and hour on the metro after flying for the last 10 hours so we just took a taxi. Many reviews said that the street that the hotel is on, is very unsafe and shady looking and run down, but in my opinion, all of Athens looks run down. I never at any point felt unsafe walking in the area where our hotel was and this is coming from two women in our late twenties.

We got a room that face the back of the building, it was very nice and clean. I highly suggest having breakfast at the hotel, it cost 7 euros, and was very simple but filling. There's a Metro station (Victoria Station) just literally a 5 minute walk from the hotel, and if you buy a 24 hour Metro pass it only cost 4 euros, definitely worth it! Spend the day sightseeing and just take the metro everywhere instead of a taxi. You can directly get off at the Acropoli Station to get to all the sights. Just a piece of advice, if you plan on seeing the Parthenon and all the sights, get there FIRST thing in the morning (8am is when they open), because it's a lot of walking uphill, so go when its cooler and also avoid the mass of people that show up at noon. You'll get the best pictures, when there aren't so many people crowding you.. The tourism ministry charges 12 euros, to visit something like 7 sights, so it's pretty worth it finically. After the sights, head over to Plaka and just walk around the flea markets, good experience.

Also where the metro station near the hotel is located is called Victoria Square, they have awesome cafe's to grab dinner or just lounge around and drink. If you're not in the mood, there's a Gyro place, literally right next to the hotel to the right, best ever for like 5 euros. and there a supermarket right next to the hotel too, in case you need to buy anything.

Overall the place we chose was really good. In the end you're not really spending you're entire day in the hotel, so you need something thats clean and cheap. Since there's a metro station a 5 minute walk away, it's convenient to get around.

Room Tip: It doesn't matter what room you get. You're here to sightsee, not be holed up in your hotel room!
