We stayed at Claridge hotel with our three teenagers at the end of a vacation in Greece and just wanted a simple hotel for out last days in Athens before departuring from Ahtens international airport. Our expecations on standards was not high.

The hotel is located by the Omonia square which is one of the "ruffer" areas in central Athens. There are a lot of homeless people, drug addicts, groups of younger men drifting about without any particular reason etc. in the neighbourhood. All together it lower the impression of the hotel. We recommend you stay somewhere near Plaka in case you want a calmer and more picturesque environment. The hotel is close to flee markets, traditional grocery markets etc.

In best case the staff is uninterested in whatever you ask then, and in some cases just plain nasty. Simple questions can be answered by anything like "not interested, go ask someone else" to "[--]". One of the guests was completely roasted by the receptionist for pulling the elevator door handle a second too early (before the elevator had stopped).

Floors, walls etc. in public areas remind of something from the communist era and nightclubs in the 70's. There was large holes in some of the inner walls and the stairwell was full of furniture and junk.

The view from the balcony (Floor 6 towards the Omonia square) was ok and we had no problems with noise from the traffic (except for sirens from occational police cars).

The room and bathroom was clean and so was the sheets. With exception from under the bed which was full of dust. Aircondition woked fine and the room came with a large balcony (but it had no furniture). The small fridge was not working properly, but to be honest, we had not expected any fridge at all.

Colours on walls etc. comes in grey and some yellow/beige shade. It reminded us of East Germany in the 60's. You can hear everything the people in the next room is doing and talking about. Locks for the door, window and balcony is more of a joke than actually having any purpose. There is no safety deposit box in the rooms.

Breakfast is a subject in itself. There are some newly baked white bread, butter, cheese
slices and ham. The coffee is not worth mentioning. The orange juice is some kind of artificial stuff, the milk is a light brown mess which is poured from tins (we guess it is condensed milk) and mixed with tap water.

We can only recommend Claridge as a temporary solution in case your only preference is somewhere to stay the night without any other demands. But in that case you should be able to find somewhere cheaper. It is beyond our understanding how Claridge got its two stars.

Stayed there 2 nights in the middle of May '08. The big killer for the hotel was bedbugs. I woke up my last morning there and found 2 crawling next to me. I but them in a plastic bag and gave them to the guy at the front desk who just said "Oh. That's not good." I hope he did something about it. I ended up with more than 20 bites. Other than that... the location was fine. Omonia Sq might be a little loud, but my room on the 6th floor was quiet enough and had a good balcony. The facilities were ok, but not great. My blanket had old cigarette burns in it, but the room itself seemed clean if void of any personality. The internet connection I was told twice was 'broken' yet I saw the staff using it. Excluding the bedbugs, I would give this place a 2 on a scale of 1->5, if only for the location and balcony.
