“Must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2012

Great place to visit where the Athenians do their daily shopping. Then we had a great lunch at the Papandreou Taverna inside the market, there from -1898 and a favorite of the people working there. You know the food is excellent, all fresh from produce and fish and or meats from the markets. Been there before and will go again!

“Greece at its most authentic”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2012

There is nothing touristy about the market, yet it is great to see. The one half of this colourful, noisy spectacle is wall-to-wall carcasses (lambs aplenty when I was there just before Easter), while in the hall next door the amazing bounty of the sea is displayed on marble slabs.

It is not for the squeamish, but if you want to see Greece at its most authentic, this is it. Take your camera along (the vendors are used to tourists), but remember to chose the fluorescent white-balance setting; otherwise your photos are all going to have a yellow tinge.

The market is on Athinas Street about midway between Monastiraki and Omonia metro stations. From either of these it is about a five minute walk.

“Worth a look for the hustle & bustle”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2012

Worth a look if you are in the area for what is primarily a meat & fish market. Plenty of butchers plying their trade on outside stalls with blood covered 'white coats.
Market building dates from late 19th century.
Some good value sweet shops at the front of the market (facing the road).

“Nothing exciting here, just a meat market”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2011

Worth a look if you're passing it anyway, but don't go out of your way as it's just a meat market. There is nothing much else to look at here.
