“Great location but this time there was an unpleasant episode”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

We were at Arion two years ago and this time we decided to stay there again before going to Santorini and again before going back home.
It is a great location although getting there may be kind of funny... the taxi has to get through a narrow street where people are sitting literally in the middle of the street drinking and chatting. But very convenient... close to the bars and taverns of Psiri, to metro station of Monastiraki, to Akropolis, to a street where you can buy spices and regional goods... Tell the taxi to turn right on Athinas, 39, then left and right... you are at the hotel... Rooms and breakfast ok, astounding terrace with a view of the Akropolis. But, thi time a very unpleasant episode spoiled our good opinion of the hotel staff... when my husband was leaving the hotel for a very early flight he forgot his cell phone at his room. He could not call them right away from the taxi because the driver could not understand well English. Next day, we called the front desk, and THEY NEVER FOUND THE CELL PHONE... I was going back to the hotel a couple of days later and I insisted he needed because of the numbers, I even suggested that maybe it fell under the bed and it was not seen immmediately by the cleaning maid... in short, I gave them all chances to save face... and I really regret that the hotel did not seem to make any effort to convince the cleaning maid to give back the cell phone... We are 100% sure that it was left there because it was on the bedside table... Unfortunately, Greece is full of imigrants who do these minor works and do not seem to have any scruples at keeping forgotten items... they believe the guest will never be back... but I was a few days later... they did not seem to worry at all with the fact... and as my husband used the cell phone alarm to wale up, he is sure he left it there... when the taxi arrived, he left the room in a hurry and that was it...

Room Tip: a room with a view of the Akropolis

Dear GreekBrazilianfem,

Firstly we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your preference in our hotel. We are very glad that you visited Arion Athens for the second time. Creating repeat clientele is a very important and difficult goal and we are really proud that our Group of hotels has a large number of them.

Regarding this incident with your cell phone, we have checked your room but unfortunately the cell phone was not found. I can assure you that whenever an item is found by the housekeeping it is handed in the reception to be returned to the client.

We do hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back soon.

Kind Regards

A superb hotel. Was very close to the Acropolis, two subway stops or a nice walk. Hotel was very new and modern, very clean. Lovely modern marble Bathroom had a proper bath not just a shower. Bed was excellent. View from the roof terrace was amazing. Free wireless. Locker room to leave your baggage after check out. And all for only 60 euros a night. Some reviewer I notice say the location of the hotel is run down, well there is a lot of graffiti as there is everywhere in Athens, the area is akin to say Williamsburg in New York, or Venice in LA, or Camden in London, so might look rough but is anything but.

You can't beat the location of this hotel as it's any easy walk to the Monasiraki Metro station. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The rooms were clean and our bathroom was modern and spacious. The area is a bit rundown as other travellers mention but it didn't bother me one bit. I felt quite safe at all time. There is a nice strip of restaurants about a half block away. Can't say I tried the food but we went out for a drink one night and enjoyed watching all the activity. The hotel has a roof garden which offers a spectacular view of the Acropolis. They just need to open a restaurant/bar there and take advantage of the view they offer.

From outside the hotel looks quite shabby, and yes, there is graffiti on the walls around. But inside it is a clean and friendly hotel with nice large rooms - good value for the price. The area around did not feel insecure, as other travellers write, it's so near to nice little restaurants, and there are alsways people around.

Dear MK1Barry,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your review following your recent stay at Arion Athens Hotel. We are very glad to read that you enjoyed the hotel as well as the very central location with the nice little restaurants-tavernas. Indeed there are always people around, as many Athenians of all ages choose to go out to Monastiraki and Plaka area for a drink at night or earlier in the day for lunch/dinner. Again many thanks for your review. We really look forward to welcome you back soon! Best Regards,
The whole team at Arion Athens Hotel

We chose this hotel as we wanted to be within walking distance of Monastiraki metro station which is on the line from the airport. The hotel is within an easy 10 min walk of the metro stop. The area is not the most affluent, but it has a certain charm. Unfortunately Athens is looking a bit sad right now with so many shops having closed & there being such a lot of graffiti all over. However, the hotel is quite modern & well maintained. The facilities are pretty good & the room furnishings comfortable & contemporary. We only stayed one night but the room was quite spacious & we would have been comfortable had we stayed longer. The AC worked well, there was a small safe in the room & satellite TV with English news (CNN). The view of the Acropolis from the roof terrace was wonderful to experience, especially at night. If you turn right as you leave the hotel & walk down the street you'll arrive in a very vibey area with many bars & restaurants which seemed quite festive. The area immediately around the Monastiraki metro station was quite frenetic at night where a lot of young "punkish/gothic" looking locals hung out. Breakfast at the hotel was adequate but nothing special. We paid €70 for 2 people including breakfast (11 Sep 2012).

Room Tip: Ask for an Acropolis facing room when making your booking as we requested one on arrival & were...

Dear PeeVee,

Thank you very much for choosing our hotel and for posting a review.
The hotel, as you mentioned, is strategically located with direct access to/from the airport as well as Piraeus port from where Ferries depart for all Aegean Sea islands. We hope to see you again on your future trip to Athens.

We were also worried about booking this hotel because of the local area. We arrived in the very early morning (3am) at night and I must admit I was a little put off by the graffiti on the surrounding shop shutters - but this all changed in the daylight.
We loved the fact that you were right in the hub of the city and surrounded by some great tavernas with really friendly staff. If you want a taste of the real Athens then this is the perfect location. The streets are narrow, lots of cats, atmosphere and (as you'd hope) lots of Greeks!
Our room was basic, clean and just what we needed for a comfortable stay in this amazing city. Our shower leaked over the edge of the bath and the breakfast wasn't the best I've ever had - but for value for money this place rocks. The reception staff were also always friendly and helpful.
If you like being in the thick of it - this is the place for you

Clean. Friendly English speaking staff. Lot of space and well organized room. Beautiful view on the acropolis from the rooftop terrace. Good breakfast for every taste. Slow internet, sometimes no connection available. Close to the city centre. Not sure about the safety of the neighborhoods, I didn't dare go out after 7PM. But I had the feeling that it is quite a widespread problem in Athens (at the moment). Good value for money.
