“They kicked us out”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2007

To be quite honest, even if I disregard the fact that they kicked us out onto the street our last night there, I would consider the Ava Hotel to be "just ok."

We originally booked the Ava Hotel for one night. We then decided to stay two and emailed the hotel back requesting a second night. They responded that they would have to change us to a different room if we stayed another night. We responded that it would be fine and asked for directions. They final email from the hotel listed the directions.

On the second day of our stay, we were walking around the Plaka, and received a phone call requesting that we move out stuff out of the hotel room immediately. Confused, we returned to the hotel to find out that because they never responded with an exact confirmation number, we did not have a room booked for that night.

We ended up staying at another hotel (the Royal Olympic) that night which was phenomenal. It put the Ava to shame. Then on our return to Athens before flying back to the states, we stayed at another hotel (Electra Palace) which, again, was 10 times better than Ava.

All-in-all, I wouldn't recommend the Ava Hotel. It's not worth it, and you can do much much better.

We sincerely regret the unfortunate comments of this guest. The fact is that the guest had a confirmed reservation for 1 night and his room could not be extended by a further night given that the room had already been reserved by another guest. Our staff was courteous and extremely polite to our guest at all times and as a sign of sympathy they did everything in their power (during extremely busy period) to secure at least an equal if not better accommodation close by. The guest was indeed booked in a 5 star hotel at no extra cost at all at the courtesy of AVA Hotel.

My husband and I travelled to Greece in June and were looking for a hotel in Athens. Trip Advisor had this one rated as the best for location, value and service. It was fantastic. On our first night, I leaned out of the window and there, almost close enough to touch, was the Acropolis; lit up and stunning! The hotel is great value; the rooms are large (unusual for Europe), they have kitchenettes if you want to whip up something in house, the staff are really helpful and friendly and they all speak excellent English. The hotel is located right in the Plaka - the busy tourist centre teaming with restaurants and shops - and right at the foot of the Acropolis. Hotel has free internet for guests (they have a sign saying they they will charge for usage over 15 minutes per session, but it wasn't enforced while we were there, but then again, we didn't abuse the priviledge), there are slippers, decent toiletries and breakfast. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Athens. Oh, and they have a neat book swap shelf where you can drop off your read novels and pick up something for the next leg of your trip!

We chose the Ava, after reading about dozens of hotels in Athens, based on Trip Advisor reports, and as usual you were right; the Ava is a treasure among hotels. It’s no wonder you all rate it number one
in Athens.

We stayed there twice, once in the standard room, which was very large, with all the quality amenities we have come to expect and once
in the “apartment”, which is elegant, a king bed in a separate bedroom and a huge living/dining room and a kitchen. From the generous balcony there was a view of Hadrian’s Arch to the left and the Acropolis to the right. There was every amenity we could want, including dishes and glasses, microwave, coffee pot, and even a waffle-maker. There was both a mini-bar and a mini-fridge. Lighting was abundant, with lamps and overheads. And in the hot Athens summer,
best of all, an air conditioner which worked great.

The Ava is in the heart of the Plaka, the old district, and close to streets closed to traffic and now walking streets, full of ancient buildings, sidewalk restaurants, shops and sights. There are surprises all over, partially excavated ruins, restored Byzantine Churches, ancient Greek monuments, and more museums (folk, music, art, etc) than you could shake a stick at. The Ava is within easy walking distance of the Acropolis, the Greek and Roman Agoras (markets) and many other important sites. Close by is the Metro,
which is clean, artistic, graphiti-free and efficient, much better than traffic above ground on exhaust-filled streets.

The Ava has a small restaurant, fine for breakfast (we dined out at sidewalk tavernas), an elevator, high-speed Ethernet internet service
in every room. And it’s complementary; how nice. There is never the feeling here of being dinged every time you turn around with another charge for things you expect.

All of the staff is pleasant and accommodating and cheerful. I just can’t say enough good things about how we were treated and welcomed. It does make a huge difference to be recognized and appreciated as a guest.

The Ava is not inexpensive, but this is the heart of Athens, and for reasonable cost we had a superior accommodation and excellent service; in terms of value, this is a bargain. We will definitely return.

Perfect location! Four minutes to Acropolis , two minutes to Temple of Zeus and two minutes to shops and restaurants in Plaka and Anafiotika. Very friendly reception and staff. Had Suite 301 which had a terrace overlooking both Acropolis and Temple - ideal for a pre-dinner bottle of wine! Suite very spacious and clean with small kitchenette which we did not use. Would we recommend it? Yes!

My family of 4 (including 2 adults, one teenager and one 10 year old) and a family friend (20 year old) spent 4 wonderful nights at the AVA Hotel. On arrival at the Athens airport, we proceded to catch the Blue Metro line No 3 to Syntagma Square then the metro Red Line to the Akropolis Station. We walked only a short distance from the station and were pleasantly surprised to find our hotel in a quiet, centrally located street in the Plaka area. The AVA hotel executive suite was beautifully appointed with a large separate room for my husband and I, a comfortable sofa bed strategically positioned near the television our two boys and a comfortable single bed for our friend. Whilst we did not use the kitchenette often, it was still useful in preparing warm drinks and snacks.

On arrival, we did not waste time venturing out into the streets of the Plaka to explore the shops and restaurants. Many of the restaurants were setting up rotisaries to cook the lamb for the Easter Sunday celebrations the next day. Our favourite restaurant in the Plaka area was the Byzantino - great service and reasonably priced, delicious food.

At 11.00pm on Easter Saturday, we entered the local (50m from the hotel) Greek Orthodox Church to participate in the Easter Service. Towards the end of the service our candles were lit and the congregation dispersed into the streets of Athens.

AVA hotel was in the perfect position to visit many of the major historical attractions in Athens. Stepping out onto our verandah, we could see Hadrian's Arch to the left and the Acropolysis to the right. A perfect position.

Most of the staff were attentive to our needs. One staff member informed us of a marvellous authentic Greek restaurant a couple of train stops from the Acropolis. If staying at the AVA Hotel consider booking and organizing all of your tours with the hotel staff to avoid any problems with pick ups.

We thoroughly enjoyed the scrumptious buffet breakfast.

The AVA hotel is a very suitable place for families.

Perfect location for all the ancient sights, with the added advantage of being right at the edge of the Plaka district. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the buffet-style continental breakfast got the day off to a great start. Room (with balcony view of the Acropolis) was very comfortable and well-appointed.

If your budget will stretch, go to Edodi for dinner - about 15-20 minute walk from the hotel, but well worth it, especially if they've finished digging up the sidewalk.

AVA was, as many have mentioned already, a fantastic place to stay. Booking with them was very easy and they replied to my emails promptly. Upon arrival the staff were very welcoming and genuinely helpful in giving us tips on places to visit, eat, drink, etc. The room was large, clean, comfortable and there was even a bottle of wine waiting on ice- a nice touch that I was not expecting. One slight disappointment was the fact that my room had two single beds although this may have been my fault when I made the booking... However, the staff brought in a king size mattress, put it on top of the beds (once pushed together) and it was the comfiest bed I have ever been in! The location could simply not have been any better. It was near all the action -The Acropolis, Syntagma Square, National Gardens, Temple Of Olympian Zeus, Plaka, more- but was tucked away down a nice quiet street avoiding crowds and noise at night. I should point out that I spent a LONG time trying to find the right hotel for my trip to Greece and would recommend AVA to anyone.
