“A haven of peace in the shadow of the Parthenon”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

This is a maze of little white-washed houses and small churches, immediately north-east, and on the slopes, of the Parthenon. The Lonely Planet guide-book suggests a route starting with the steps up from Epimenidou. If, like us, you enjoy getting away from the crowds, and sauntering through narrow paths, exploring a hidden gem, so close to the city centre - this is for you. Stonemasons were brought from the island of Anafi to build the king's palace following Greece's independence (1830s), and these were their homes. Savour and enjoy!

“Like an old greek movie...”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

Being a fan of the old greek cinema, I think I had a time travel experience. Everything still remains original, the old geitonia (neighberhood) within the city of Athens. It's like walking in the narrow streets of a greek island. Give it a try and you won't miss, you can also take great photos of the city right under the Acropolis.

“Cats! Cats everywhere!”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

You can guess by my title that I am a big cat lover. :)
Anafiotika is full of cats! Beautiful, wonderful and friendly cats! Hundreds of them! It took me hours just to look at and pet one tiny bit of them.:)

Besides, it is a very nice place for a stroll and definitely a must! You cannot miss it, as it is close to Acropolis, so take several hours for this lovely neighbourhood.

Everything is small, charming, colourful, peaceful and "seaish". You have to walk uphill, so be sure you have the energy. Tiny streets, tiny stairs, flowers, old little houses, tangerines... I recommend to stroll here several times, for calmness and relaxation.

You have a wonderful view to whole Athens at the top.

The only negative and sad thing is that I see a lot of vandalism and useless graffiti on many places, and this thing could somewhat spoil the enjoyment (when you see a wonderful house with a lot of drawn names with fluorescent spray). This should be regulated.

“Most Charming Place in Athens”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

This area right underneath the Acropolis is the most peaceful and charming place in Athens. Little houses clustered around narrow walkway, decorated amply with cats, with an occasional church thrown in for good measure make up this wonderful area. You can see fragments of ancient buildings in the walls and buildings. The story is, that people from a little island by Santorini squatted here and build these houses overnight. The overnight part of this story is probably apocryphal, but it makes a good story. If you go to the Plaka don't miss this little village in the middle of a bustling city.
