Walk along the Dionysiou Areopagitou past the Acropolis Museum and up to the Monumet of Filopappus, through cypress and olive trees. The site was beautifully landscaped in the 1950s, and provides a wonderfully peaceful way to see the Acropolis, from the Filopappus monument, away from the crowds. There is also a charming, tiny, ancient church nestling among the trees, with the characteristic Byzantine brickwork. This brickwork is echoed in the paths running through the forest, made entirely of ancient materials dug up on the vast site, as are all of the benches etc.

It's an amazing view from Filopappos Hill! Be sure to find out when the Greek dancers are performing if you're going in the summer. I missed them because I didn't know about the show or the time until I got up to the top of the hill.

It's well worth taking a 15 minute walk from the acropolis to see this monument. It has an excellent 360' view of Athens. You also see some pretty amazing views of the Parthenon from a distance but slightly above it. After you return down check out Socrates prison. We were told by a worker there that this was first thought to be the sight of the prison discovered in the 19th century but that early in the 20th century the actual prison sight was found in the Agora. Again well worth the walk.

Filopappos Hill is smack next to the Acropolis, but it seems nobody goes there which is a shame. Walk just a little and you'll see the Pnyx, the very spot on earth where democracy was invented. Walk down a side path and see the cave where Socrates was held prisoner and was eventually forced to take his own life. These are amazing sights and they are right there! Go!
