Just stayed 3 nights in Melia Athens. Below would be summary of plusses and minuses

+ friendly service, especially the ladies at the pool seemed to run in all restaurants and every time with great attitude
+ pool is great - the view as mentioned by others. a nice place to enjoy after activities in city.
+ we stayed at the george suite which was spacious and in good condition and peaceful as not overlooking the street
+ and - in our first room the sofabed was completely broken and not possible to sleep in. The personnel handled the room change professionally and offered another room after the technician tried to repair it which didnt succeed

- poor food variation. In all restaurants same menu with few choices available. After second time there was not much choice left.between 7 and 8 pm there is no place to get anything to eat as both restaurants are closed. And this happened to be the time our boys normally eat...
- Room service - with two kids the room service is great option in he evenings but it stopped after 2 pm!
- the surrounding was indeed miserable. 50 meters from hotel you see people injecting themselves. Except the national museum there is not much to see and not many restaurants available. Taxis are of course waiting but as we prefer to walk to see the surroundings it was a bit uninviting. We felt safe - this was never an issue

Overall you feel & see that Athens is going through really tough times. Melia is also decreasing their service level probably with lower demand but there are some topics that you expect from a four star hotel which the Melia Athens management apparently tries to save on...

Dear jounianni,

Thank you for choosing Melia for your recent visit to Athens and also for sharing your comments with us; our customers comments are highly appreciated as we count on those in order to improve our services. We were sorry to read that some of the hotel’s services and /or facilities did not meet your expectations. Regarding the menu, kindly please note that I have already passed your comments to the relevant department in order to review it and make the appropriate amendments and additions. Furthermore, kindly please note that due to the restructuring of the hotel’s services, we had to temporarily amend the room service hours. This is something that is going to be changed and soon enough the room service will be available as usual on a 24 hour basis. I understand that like most other big capital cities, you may get across to some distinctive individuals, places and/or events; however Athens is a safe city to visit. No matter what, please be assured that I will make sure to pass all your comments to the relevant departments.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your nice comments regarding our team.

Hope to see you again on your next visit to Athens.

Best Regards,
Zoi Kanto-Tourkmani

Athens is in crises, the shops are closing and there is graffiti sprayed all over the walls of the town, there are even small riots (very small despite the look of the news). That said we felt very safe, there were some 7000 police in town on patrol who were board to death. We walked the streets and saw less crime and begging than I saw in other cities like Rome or New York.

The Melia is the old Recience Georgio and it is a beautiful property at a great price. The front desk staff is pretty to look at but not overly friendly and I was surprised the hotel does not have a porter so we had to drag our bags up ourselves (no big deal we had been back packing for 3 weeks). We did complain that the carpets are filthy, and they offered to send a maid but as I explained this is not a thing a maid can help, the grime and filth is from years of hard wear, it is time for new carpets. When I told the manager George about this he bent over backwards to help us, giving us another room, and even carried our bags. He is charming, I hope Meilia hires more like him.

The hotel has a stunning bar on the roof that looks at the acropolis, but I was surprised that the menu was burgers and pizza. I guess they figure pool side menu. I recommend a drink here to end your day.

If you stay here cabs anyplace in the downtown area are 7 euro, we got hit 15 euros when we arrived clearly a rip off. There is a hop on hop off tour bus that you can catch a block from here. Overall I recommend this hotel as great value, nice manager and central location.

Room Tip: Check your carpets before you unpack

We booked our trip through europeanvacations.com. Every hotel they recommended was excellent, including this one. This hotel is very likely among the top hotels in Athens. The building itself is stunning. You do pay a bit more for this hotel, but what you receive in return is certainly worth the investment. Their café is great, as well as their restaurant. However, where you get your money’s worth is at their rooftop lounge. The view is spectacular and the service we had was perfect. The hotel is conveniently located to several attractions and the metro. If you chose to stay at this hotel (which I recommend) the metro goes directly from the airport just half a block outside the hotel, so I suggest you take the metro and save yourself a lot of time and money.

I have high expectation for Melia hotel. I had great experience in service and facilities at the previous melia in Argentina and Asia. However, I was utterly let down. The location is very central. May be a little concerning but it is a city and as long as one is vigilant... I think it is interesting. The general facilities is not bad... except the hotel corridor can be quite claustrophobic. Worst is when some one is smoking. The room and shower facility is decent and above average... There was no kettle but there was nespresso machine without the pods or even tea bags. Even a service station hotel provide that. When asked the front desk,,, his mannerism was as if he was doing us a favour by putting us a better room, there fore nespresso machine should not even be there!! Why not just remove if they can not even bother to provide the facility!! Secondly, it took me over three times to get my room card working! Anything one ask, the front reception desk...appears to make you feel like a chore!! One compliment is towards the staffs at the rooftop bar!
Certainly I will not recommend anyone who expect good quality service. May just spoilt your experience in Athens! I wonder what Melia management respond to this!

Hotel is fantastic, not a bad word to say about it. Staff are really friendly. Rooms are lovely - especially the shower with massaging water jets. Roof top pool is very relaxing with great views of the Acropolis.
Only bad part is the area its in, very dirty and worn down part of town. Close to metro station though and decent train service to better parts of Athens.

This hotel enjoys a central location and from the roof you have a view of the acropolis. On this roof is also the pool and a fine restaurant. The rooms are small but very nice and clean. A real winner!
