“Bit far from the Metro perhaps? Buses crowded.”
Reviewed July 21, 2010

Ok hotel I guess but wouldn't stay there again. mostly because of transportations, now of course it may be nice if a attractive woman snugs up to you on the bus but when it gets to the point where you start to think what her husband may think and hey is that 2m 120KG bloke over there it?
The aircondition made more noise than cold.
The pedestrian street a block from the hotel is full of resturants an friendy locals++++.

This is a great hotel if you want to be away from the city centre (with it's awful traffic), and wish to meet some of the locals in one of the many bars and restaurants in the paved pedestrian street of Aghias Zonis, on which the hotel is located. The area is very busy in the evening, this can be a problem if you are in the rooms at the front of the hotel, as the greeks eat and socialize late. There are the sound of scooters and shouting children into the small hours of the morning in the street below, although the hotel itself is very quiet.
The rooms very a bit in size and comfort, the air conditioning and electrics vary a lot in noise, although the furnishings are the same neutral hotel style. Personally, I would pay the extra for a balcony room at the front of the hotel which are bigger. The rooms at the back are stuffy and face a wall.
A good thing about this hotel are the helpful and pleasant staff. I became ill and had to go to hospital. The receptionist called a taxi and wrote out my symptoms in greek, which proved invaluable. When I came back, they seemed genuinely concerned for my welfare. They changed my mother's room, to one on the same floor without us having to ask. The next day, the lady in the breakfast room volunteered a tray for her to take some food for up for me as well.
The worst thing about this hotel is it distance from most of the city's attractions. The nearest tube station is 20 mins walking, which in the heat, is punishing. The trolley bus routes 5 and 11 go from Amerkis sq, which is nearer. The buses are frequent, but packed and airless, and It's still about 20 mins to the centre, which is a long time if you have to stand.

We stayed three nights at this hotel. Initially, we were concerned about the location of this hotel as it is 7 bus stops away from the City area which takes about 30 minutes by the trolley bus. However, we were consoled by the array of reasonable restaurants/eateries along the neighbouring blocks; there are also a few minimarts nearby if you need to grab some drinks or snacks. The service and breakfast were passable but not exceptionally great. Rooms were small but functional.

At first, I was a bit upset with the distance of the hotel from the Acropolis and major sites, but after our stay, I was pleasantly surprised with the quiet neighborhood which is well away from the tourist scene, yet easily accessible by tram line. There is a wonderful plaza nearby filled with great local restaurants and cafes -- a real local scene, no tourists to be found. Rooms were quite small, but clean -- the front desk staff were extremely helpful. I would stay here again.

We were pleasantly surprised how good the hotel was after reading the reviews of the hotel after we had already booked it!
We found it difficult to find, even the taxi driver found it difficult, but once we had our bearings we found it easy to get around. A short walk down the road from the hotel to the main square and any number of buses or trolley buses take you to central Athens .
We found the staff friendly and very helpful, beds comfortable and breakfast ,eat as much as you like.
We thought it good value for money.

  • Liked — friendly staff, comfortable.
  • Disliked — a little too far from the centre of athens

My wife and I and another couple just spent 3 nights at the Dore. It's a small, quiet hotel in a family-oriented neighbourhood (warning: hard to find!). It's conveniently located just a few minutes walk to a main street which has frequent buses to the popular areas like Omonia and Monastiraki, not far away. Our double room had an excellent firm bed but a tiny shower. We asked for a non-smoking room away from the main street and found it to be very quiet and clean. No, there are no facilities/equipment for making tea or coffee, nor is there an internet connection. But, at a special internet rate (prepaid) of only 54 euros incl. taxes per night, we did not expect any frills and could live without the extras. Breakfast was adequate - again, we didn't expect much - but much to my chagrin, smoking was allowed, which can be annoying to those of us who are allergic to smoke.
We found the people behind the counters to be friendly and helpful.
In general, the Dore was a great little place to return for a good night's sleep after a tiring day of fabulous sightseeing in Athens.
