I’ve just returned from a three-week tour with the AthensInsiders and I can honestly say it was the best vacation ever! Our Signilar Painting Holiday in Greece included Athens, Delphi, Nafplio, Sounio, Mycenae, the islands of Santorini and Mykonos, and four days in Istanbul. Our trip was full but never exhausting. With the Insiders taking care of all the details, our small group enjoyed each day of traveling to the fullest.
The private guided tour concept is so smart! With the details and inevitable hassles of travel managed, we were truly free to enjoy all the beauty of Greece and Turkey. Because the tour was personalized, we never felt rushed or pressured to meet a schedule. The Insiders accommodated different needs within our small group, and never hesitated to arrange something special, including scouting out the best places to take our sunrise painters at dawn! Unlike many guided tours, ours was truly personalized, allowing us to make spontaneous choices each day.
The Insiders took care of all arrangements, greeting us upon our arrival at the Athens airport and driving us to the first of our hotels with a spectacular view, a wonderful breakfast, and an ideal location for sightseeing. Also included were ferry bookings, additional flights, airport transfers, our own comfortable van complete with water and snacks, and guided city and country walks. We even had cell phones provided for our use in Greece! Museum passes took us to the head of the line, saving hours of waiting, and our docents and guides were always first-rate. A private art history lecture in Athens informed our entire visit, giving us reference points for art and archaeology along the way.
We were always offered several choices of when and where we would like to eat and often had an early dinner that suited our American schedules. We dined at local eateries where dinner was cooked just for us. In one case, fish had just been brought off the boat. We enjoyed some popular tourist spots as well as many off-the-beaten-track places in extraordinary settings. A farewell dinner in Athens was truly a memorable gourmet feast!
The Insiders had the ability to deal with unexpected circumstances so that no day was wasted. For example, our Athens district was closed to traffic for most of one day, so we took a superb walk around the Agora and let our drivers deal with traffic later in the day.
Our guides, lead by Anthia and Alex, were personable, flexible, patient, knowledgeable, attentive to our needs without ever being intrusive, and just plain fun to be with! Clearly, they know and love both the cities and the countryside. They always took the time to find answers to our questions and had a wonderful sense of humor. An unexpected benefit of the trip was our ability to get to know our guides and develop friendships with them as we gained insight into the hopes and concerns of people living in Greece today. I wholeheartedly recommend the AthensInsiders to anyone seeking a unique, unforgettable trip to Greece
