“Mixed Feelings About Monastiraki”
Reviewed February 12, 2014

Lots of stalls and shops, this area is also known as the "Athens Flea Market". It seems you have to look hard to find the gems of Monastiraki. Highlights include an artist who paints hand painted icons, a sandal maker that will make custom make sandals for you, a byzantine jewerly store, plus the usual touristy tee-shirts and "stuff". And, I can't forget to mention the coffee shops and restaurants. I liked the fresh fruit vendors. Area seems safe, but very crowded. A very short walk from the Metro station.

“Good day out, shopping etc”
Reviewed February 12, 2014

Great starting point for any day adventure! My hotel was situated very close and i felt very safe walking around on my own even very early in the mornings. The busier times seemed to be in the week oddly and very quiet first thing at the weekends. There is the train station and also the fleas markets which are good to visit but it is also a local shopping area, selling everything from garden plants to electrical wiring so its and all round experience with all of the little cafes dotted in between.

“A Great Place to Start From”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

Monastiraki is at the very heart of Athens, surrounded by ancient sites, narrow streets, flea market, restaurants, coffee shops, souvenir shops, so it is basically a good place to start (and finish) your daily stroll. Below is the Monastirion metro station from where you can go to Piraeus, or Airport, or Syntagma, or Omonia, or Kerameikos, but you can also walk from one archeological site to another, visit Plaka, climb to neighborhoods below Acropolis and visit Acropolis itself, or the museums in its vicinity. Don't forget to grab some of the traditional Greek snacks at one of restaurants at the beginning of Mitropoleos st.

“Last minute Christmas Shopping”
Reviewed January 16, 2014

Just love the stalls, shops, cafes and tavernas and the market feel around Monastiraki, plenty of shops selling that something special.
The unemployed, homeless and people on strike is very sad to see!

It was at this place where we enjoyed walking with others. Nice and safe place to be visited.
Flea market nearby and nice to have coffee or a meal at one of the local restaurants or coffee shops
