We have stayed in 4th floor for 1 night and 6th floor for 4 nights.

Hotel is located in Apolonos Street which is in the city centre. Just 3 minutes walk to Eolou Street (main walking street with many boutiques, shopping malls and restaurants), 5 minutes to Syntagma Squares (Metro Station and X95 bus terminus to airport), 20 - 30 minutes to Acropolis, Temple of Olympian Zeus. We saved times and expenses for travelling.

Good services. During the breakfast, when the hotel staff checked our room number, she helped us to plan our travel schedule and provide tips for sight seeing. At the lift lobby and in the lift, there is a notice showing the openig hour and ticket prices for major museums.

In the hotel lobby, we enjoyed a free and simple afternoon tea with biscuit and tea / coffee. We also used the computer in the lobby with free printing. We watched the European Champion Final in the lobby.

Room at 4/F is a little bit small with balcony while room at 6/F is large withour balcony. However, wifi in 6/F is weaker.

Room Tip: Room at 6/F is larger then that at 4/F but no balcony with weak Wifi

This is the perfect location for getting to see all the attractions all within walking distance. The people here at the Hotel are all very helpful. Restaurants all close by and the food is excellent and they all speak english which makes it so easy

The good: Pretty good location in Plaka, blocks away from shopping, the town square, lots of varied restaurants, convenience store, etc; Some of the hotel staff were very nice and pleasant; Lounge area near reception is nice; Breakfast is decent; Rooms are adequate size and the cleaning is timely and thorough; Air Conditioning works well w/ a remote.

The bad: There was an older gentleman (I use that term loosely) who was working the night hours at the reception desk and scolded my wife for making a hot chocolate for me in the lounge area at somewhere around midnight. I believe his parting words were "Take your hot chocolate and get out of here". Completely unacceptable; The wifi, if you have the misfortune of being in one of the rooms distant from the Wireless G routers, is awful. We were in such a room and if we weren't right next to our door (basically in the bathroom), we couldn't get a stable connection. I'm sorry, but in this day and age decent internet is not a luxury, it's a must-have, and if you're advertising free WiFi in all rooms, you're not being completely truthful. At least upgrade to Wireless N routers - problem solved; The rooms and bedding definitely feel dated; Elevator is tiny - it was difficult to fit myself, my wife, and our 2 pieces of luggage in there at the same time; You have to hold the shower head by hand - there's no way to place it up above your head, so you have to 1-hand shower, and the water goes everywhere unless your careful. Few amenities, but it's one of the cheaper properties in the area.

We stayed in the Hermes' sister hotel, Hotel Plaka (which is just a couple of blocks away) and preferred it over this hotel. Beware of the wifi there as well, however.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the rooms far away from the main staircase if you want good Wifi - our room ended in...

This hotel is excellent value for money first and foremost. The hotel is very close to the heart of tourist Plaka and right next to the high street Ermou which has all the European favorites h&m, Zara etc. The street that the hotel is on is a little but run down but don't let that put you off. I think that is more a reflection of the economic climate in Greece more than anything else (lots of closed down shops etc). The hotel itself is clean, modern and well managed. The breakfast has a large variety of tasty options. The rooms are fairly small but perfectly sufficient for a stay of a few days. The bathrooms are clean and modern and our room had a good powerful shower. Our room had been made up by the time we came back from breakfast, super fast!

Fantastic hotel right in the middle of the city. All the sights are within easy walking distance. The train and bus to/from the airport are easily accessible from the hotel just a short walk up the road. The owner/manager is amazing - she visits the breakfast room each morning and talks to every guest having breakfast. She asks how everything is and if she can help in any way. She gets the map out and shows you the best way to get to all the sights. It doesn't matter what the question is, she can answer you and give you advice. The room was good, the shower was hot, the A/C was great and the breakfast was good as well. Even had a great bottle of red wine in the room to enjoy!!! Heaps of restaurants just down/up the road from the hotel. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants value for money. The owner/manager even emailed me when I booked the room and said I would be coming via bus/train to gave me directions to the hotel from Syntagma square.

This hotel is very convenient for Syntagma square/metro, 200 meters, to get the metro to the airport and all metro lines. Also, close to Plaka: it's the northern bit of Plaka but its immediate neighborhood is not so nice, though not grungy, however the picturesque touristy parts of Plaka start just a couple of streets to its south, and the Hermes is a short walk to the Monasteraki precinct, which is more down-to-earth (and more 'Greek') than the Plaka. Also, and this is a big plus if you want to buy yogurt, fruit, milk, etc. (though I don't think the mini-fridge in my room was working) it is just 2 streets away from a good minimarket, 'Bazaar'. It's a tossup about whether it would have been better to get a hotel in the middle of Plaka with its nicer neighborhood; and being close there to the Acropolis metro station, rather than to Syntagma station, would not have been a big comparative disadvantage. The Hermes has wifi, which can be intermittent, and a computer and printer on the ground floor. I paid €114,75 a night, for a 'superior twin room, fully flexible rate', for each of 4 nights, in May. This price included an excellent 'American buffet breakfast' (plus yummy Greek delicacies). The coffee was in some machine, I didn't go near it. The room was a good size. My room was on the 2nd floor, facing the street (which I had requested), and had a small balcony where an aircon unit was placed. The balcony was lit at night but on 2 of the 4 nights those lights were put out sometime during the night, thankfully. Athens has mosquitoes in May so I had to shut the door at night, unfortunately. Apollonos street is quiet. I had thought that, unlike its immediate neighbor, the Central Hotel, the Hermes didn't have a rooftop terrace with views of the Akropolis, which would have been fab at nights: there is no mention of such on their website (but one of the fotos on their website suggests there could have been, though this foto could look like the view from a penthouse room if there was one, which is what I assumed since the site's text made no references to a public terrace) and I, stupidly, did not investigate. I see from another reviewer (Rob R, May 23) that there is. I am disappointed in missing it. The room wasn't chic or pretty, but it was clean and functional. Also, nearby is a industrial-strength laundry shop; I didn't need to do any serious clothes-washing, so I did not ask the hotel if they arranged such. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms could do with an information sheet, indicating the amenities and services provided, like many other hotels have.

Dear Guest,
We thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay in Athens.
We are sorry you did not have the opportunity to experience the roof garden with some view of the Acropolis, or our good value laundry service. We have an informative board with our facilities and services inside and outside elevator as well as in the lobby area. We will examine your advise to add this informative sheet in the rooms as well.
As for the location, Hermes hotel is ideally located, as it is in Plaka, in a quiet and safe street, in between Parliament and Monastiraki and just 10-15 min walk to the Acropolis. Two blocks away is Ermou main shopping street. I am pleased you felt the hotel was of a good value.
Thank you and best regards

Stayed at the Hermes Hotel for 3 nights recently (June 2013) and it was a great location, walking distance to everything. Clean and modern rooms, nice breakfast. The Manager (Dorina) was excellent and personally took the time to talk to us and other guests about options for sightseeing and restaurants which was very helpful. After arriving home she contacted us to advise we had left a small billfold in the room safe and they have arranged to immediately return it - we appreciate the honesty of the staff. Our room had a balcony which was nice to come back to at the end of the day, but door needs to be kept closed at night because of mosquitoes. Appreciated having a room safe large enough for a laptop and good internet connection in room. No need for taxis to/from airport/port. We got the train from Pireus and the station is close to the hotel and got the airport bus at the end, which was also walking distance from the hotel.
