“Wish I found it sooner!”
Reviewed February 19, 2014 via mobile

Went here on our last night in athens.
Enticed by the local live music and the number of locals inside.
The host seated us away from the music but I soon found myself up dancing.
I thought this was one of the most authentic tavernas in the area.
Didnt feel like the usual tourist trap. The starters/ meze were delicious. The host suggested we didnt have a large meal and shared the smaller plates. "Tonight you eat like greeks!"
Enjoyed the meal, reasonably priced. The locals were friendly too and didn't mind a nothern barbarian dancing around the restaurant!
Oh, and have the raki with honey. :p

“Apollonia Lyra - A Great Dining Find on Plaka’s “Taverna Row”
Reviewed February 11, 2014

Finding a good tavern in the Plaka area of Athens can be a big challenge. Restaurant “hawkers” are everywhere making your pick that much more difficult. Fortunately, Apolonia Lyra pretty much lives up to what they promise. The food is more than a cut above the usual fare offered at most places. The mezzes - from tzatziki to spicy meatballs (Soutzoukakia) to stuffed squash blossoms and more – are all delicious and freshly prepared. Greek salad is a must. Entrées – from grilled fish to mousaka, lamb, eggplant and more – are well prepared and authentic Greek. The wait staff is exceptionally pleasant and ready to please. The evening we were there, our hostess turned out to be from Astoria, Queens! She moved back to Athens with her husband and, if I’m not mistaken, is part owner. She was a total delight. Combine the food at Lyra with a mix of chatty, laughing tourists and locals and you’ve got the recipe for a tasty and fun evening. One cautionary note, and this applies to every Greek restaurant in Athens, smoking is permitted in outdoor dining areas and your nearby table mates may very well light up before, during and after dining! All in all, our evening at Lyra an enjoyable experience and we we highly recommend it for dining in the Plaka.

“Just Perfect!”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

Located at the most picturesque neighborhood of Athens, surrounded by neoclassical architecture, ancient history and nostalgic atmosphere, Apollonia Lyra easily captures your sight and attracts you to enter.
However the reason that you will eventually revisit this place is the amazing food and the equally great service that make this experience one to remember.
There is live music playing on Fridays and Saturdays but make sure you arrange your table reservation in advance.
All in all either for a cup of coffee or a Luculian dinner this place made its way up to my list of highly recommended.
