Owner description: This beautiful oasis offers a soothing respite of greenery from the big city with many benches for picnicking, cafes, duck ponds and a small zoo.

The gardens are not well-preserved but you will feel so calm and peaceful in there, that you will not wish to get out in the noisy center of Athens! Take your time, check out the scenery and sit on the benches available here and there.

Full of various trees and plants from all over the world, this Garden in the heart of Athens offers a very welcome walk away from the buzz of the city at any time, as well as a place to cool off in the hot Greek summers... The temperature here is always a few degrees lower that in the rest of the city!! The residents of Athens love their National (former "Royal") Garden and they come often here for a stroll, a coffee or an ouzo in the small cafe, some quiet time to read or to chat with friends or to be with themselves in peace... A precious place in a city that -unfortunately- does not benefit from many green spaces!!

The gardens are next to the Syntagma square so you can go very easy.
No matter what the temperature is outside in the gardens is always cool. At the coffe shop you can have a Greek coffee or a frape and relax. You forget that you are in the midle of a big city.

Here, you can spend hours under the shade of the trees... what used to be the garden of the place of the king of Greece have been renamed into National gardens (from Royal Gardens..) Garden landscaping at its best!

I have now visited Athens, Greece many different times, mostly on my way from Greek island vacations or from Turkey where I have business. This time I found myself in Athens in September, (August and Sept. being the hottest month in Athens). You will enjoy the beautiful warm nights but in the day the sun can be mercilessly hot. (Always wise choice to bring umbrella, hat, sunscreen and water in your bag)

I fortunately stumbled on to a solution to the stifling heat when visiting this hectic metropolis. Directly between the the Parliament building and its hourly Changing of the Guards and the Temple of Olympic Zeus is a sort of oasis right in the middle of the city. It is the National Garden and its found amongst all of the concrete buildings and pulsating city life. This "oasis" lies this quiet, wooded, and tranquil retreat. filled with duck ponds, orchids, peacocks, palm trees, and best of all, I beat the heat by finding lots of benches under the cool shade trees to just reflect on the beauty of the surroundings. You can see the main throoughfare as it is cocated right in the middle of Athens (like Central Park only smaller). It has made my appreciation of the "city" of Athens go from a 5 to a 10 on a scale of enjoying myself in a city---and it is FREE! Conveniently located as you can walk to the Plaka and underground train from here too.
