We travel a lot. Wherever we go we try to find places that the locals eat. The hidden gems that serve the best of what the area has to offer. While in Athens we had some good meals. We ate at a Michelin starred hotspot, a nice cafe, To Steki To llia was bar far the best food and the best dining experience.
The dining area is set in a garden off a quiet residential street in Thisio. It is a refreshing break from the hustle of Downtown Athens. As we dined the garden filled with local families looking to enjoy a late dinner and lively conversation. Great atmosphere!
We ate fried peppers (deliciously sweet and smokey). Saganaki, steamed courgettes. All really good. This was followed by excellent grilled sausage and pork loin. The star of the show however was the grilled lamb. Succulent grilled lamb chops cooked to smokey perfection. They are marinated in olive oil, lemon juice and herbs then grilled and served piping hot on a large platter. This is Athens! This is exactly what we were hoping for! Perfect with a carafe of 3 of the house red. (Don't forget the tzatziki - the best we have ever had! Or the golden fried potatoes).
The waiters were friendly and helpful. From suggestions on the menu, to arranging a taxi for our departure. Our kind host even put our wine "on the house" and picked up the tab for our children's drinks for good measure. Cannot say enough about their hospitality.
So, in short, if you are looking for a view, or a Michelin Star, look elsewhere. If you want delicious food amongst friendly people and to feel, just for that fleeting moment, that you too are one of the locals - go here!
