We had a very enjoyable visit to the Jewish Museum which is in what must be a converted private house a few minutes walk from Syntagma Square. Lots of very interesting exhibits spread over a number of floors (there is a lift available).

All signs are in English as well as Greek. Nice little gift shop by the ticket office as well and friendly staff made this a most enjoyable visit during our time in Athens. Definitely recommended.

A small private collection of family heirlooms and donations that help to give visitors a sense of what Judaism was like in Greece prior to the Shoah. Beautiful displays of art, jewelry, literature, and fashion are spread throughout. While it is a tiny glimpse, I found it answered many of my outstanding questions about Greek Jewish life over the millennia. Sadly, it is heavy on Shoah materials and education. I know it’s necessary to remember and tel the stories of survivors and martyrs however I always find myself wanting to see what life was like before the Shoah not during and after. The museum strikes a healthy balance.

Jewish Museum of Greece ( 9 - 2:30 pm; Sundays open at 10 am). 39 Nikis Street near Navarhou Nikodimou. +30-210-3225582. Jewishmuseum.gr
Seniors get discount, Though relatively small compared to major museums, the four floors house superb displays of Jewish life in Greece. It contains first-hand witness testimony of the decimation of the community in the Holocaust, as well as accounts of Righteous Gentiles. Even if you think you know the topics, a visit is both worthwhile and important. Plan at least an hour. You will not be disappointed.

This is a lovely little museum, four levels of information about the Jews of Greece throughout history. The exhibits are well done and include lots of information about the Holocaust including a short film with stories by survivors. The exhibits could be a little more informative, but I think you can get a headset that provides more information than what is marked on the display cases. At the end of the tour are items from a synagogue no longer there - bima, ark, torahs and ner Tamid. There is also a small gift shop.

This museum is small but powerful. Exhibits are well curated and tell the story of Jews in Greece. Exhibits depicting World War II are especially powerful with personal stories accompanying the displays. Definitely worth a visit.
