My husband and I, along with my mother and her friend, booked two rooms at the NJV Athens Plaza through hotels.com. We stayed for 4 nights, and had a special deal for 4 nights for the price of 3. Excellent price for such a wonderful location!
We toured Greece for 3 days with Spiros the Driver, a wonderful man who speaks great English and lived in New York for 20 years, who took us to the Acropolis and Parthenon, Temple of Zeus and the Changing of the Guard at Syntagma Square, then to Sounion to see the fantastic views and the temple of Apollo.
We went to the Pelopponesian Peninsula to see Ancient Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Naphlion another day The third day we went to Delphi, where Spiros arranged for a very good guide, Georgia, to take us through the Temple of Delphi and other sites there. On the way back we went to Agios Lucas, a beautiful restored monastery in the mountains.
Spiros gave us lots of information about Greece and its history, as well as knowing where all the best restaurants and shops for jewelry and handmade pottery were located. He was invaluable, and maximized our vacation by knowing how to get us most efficiently to and from our destinations, some of which were quite tricky. He has an excellent web site which lists many of the destinations and what you can see.
We loved the location of the hotel and had a room on the 8th floor with large private balcony which looked up to the Acropolis and Parthenon. We could look the other way to the Parliament Building and Syntagma Square. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the bathroom very nice. There was a desk/ dressing table with mirror and stool. A large closet with safe was welcome. There was a bench which folded out for one suitcase, and the other could be put into the closet on a shelf. We put some of our clothes in the drawers in the built-in desk. The furnishings had been renovated for the Olympics, so the headboard was a bit worn and the carpet corners were coming up a tiny bit. Besides that, everything was very nice.
There were two chairs and a small round table, and we took them out on our balcony one night to have our cocktails. A magical night watching the Parthenon as sunset deepened into night, and the Acropolis gradually lighted up!
The two ladies had a room on the same side of the building on the 5th floor, but it did not have a Parthenon view. I asked Niko at the desk to check for a room with view for them, since we were staying for a while-- he was so nice and called back later with a room with a view, although the ladies decided they were settled and happy enough with their room so did not want to move after all.
We loved the room service! The eggs were fresh and perfectly cooked-- we got 2 boiled eggs so that we could get dressed and eat at the same time, to get ready for our early-start tourist days. The ham was good, but the bacon was even better-- crispy and wonderful and plentiful! They brought slices of bread as well, and a tomato, so we usually split the breakfast and it was plenty for the two of us. The breakfast was about 8 Euros, which was a decent price for a full room service breakfast.
The room service was extremely prompt-- less than 15 minutes from the time we called in our order each morning, and the servers were smiling and pleasant and very nice.
The lobby was spacious and comfortable, with chandeliers and a marble floor, and a nice cafe area with comfortable chairs and low tables to the side where you could order coffee or a drink. The buffet breakfast and restaurant were on the next level up, but we did not eat there since we wanted to maximize our morning time, and the 20 Euro breakfast was not included in our room. It looked wonderful, with all manner of fabulous foods spread out on the tables every morning.
All in all, a wonderful stay! E. Jones, Atlanta, GA
