As we arrived to hotel it was in a remote area---not much for night life or restaurants in the area...abut a 10 min walk to Syngrous subway station and there are restaurants/pubs in that area. The service at the hotel was wonderful--it was our honeymoon so they gave us a complimentary upgrade from standard to a Junior suite---they were trying to get us to add breakfast but was very expensive--to expect at a 5 star hotel. The lobby is beautiful. The room was nice--i wouldn't say 5 star quality. The bed was very comfortable and very good size bathroom. The view of the acropolis from the rooftop bar was amazing---first night in Athens. The pool is nice--small, but has lower and upper level decks for laying out in sun--also has outside dining---very relaxing atmosphere.

Location to the Acropolis/Plaka area is about 15--20 min walk--depending on pace. We did use there free shuttle service to the Parliament--that was nice. Taxis are outside the hotel at all times if you want to use the taxi service. Very easy to figure out where you are going as like I said there there is not much in the area except a very high pace street--where cars/motorcycles drive 60+ mph!!

Really the only downfall was---when we would ask the concierge about restaurants in the area of hotel---we really didn't get any help---no one could suggest anything--probably because there is nothing.

This is my third visit to this hotel and enjoyed the same excellent service. The amenities are first class, the club lounge is worth the upgrade with incredible views of the acropolis. My room on the club floor was nicely appointed with a large bathroom and sitting area. I enjoyed the pool area which is secluded and has food & beverage service. The complimentary shuttle was very nice since the hotel is located a short distance from Syntagma Square (Acropolis area).

This is a refurbished 1960's property, built in the 60's model - a huge hotel (500+ rooms) with masses of public space, lots of eating options and its own little shopping centre. I had a Club Room on the 9th (top) floor, with an exceptional view of the Acropolis. The room was the largest standard room I have had in any hotel for quite a while, big enough for a full sofa and armchair as well as the bed. It had been refurbished to a decent standard, with flat screen TV, but could not be called 'modern'.

The Club lounge is also one of the largest I've used, with plenty of sofas and a terrace with Acropolis views. What lets it down is the lack of food. The best club lounges can feed you all day. Apart from breakfast, all Athens offers is a few canapes over lunch and in the evening - nowhere near enough to fill you up. Internet in the club lounge is also not free (there are 5 PC's) after the first hour.

Another issue is location. Sygrou metro is only 5 mins walk away, and is well located (1 stop to Akropolis, 1 stop to Syntagma square). However, that 5 minute walk involves crossing a hugely busy road. You could get the tram one stop, which leaves you about 1 minute from the hotel, but the frequency is not too great.

I would stay here again - I especially like the big room and Acropolis view. However, I'm not sure I would have brought my family because of the hassle of walking from the metro and, indeed, the pool which is rather small and definitely not on the best in Athens.

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for choosing the Athenaeum InterContinental for your recent stay in Athens.

We are very pleased to know that you found the comfort and spaciousness of our Club InterContinental rooms and lounge to your satisfaction.
Please let me take this opportunity to inform you that even though the hotel was built between 1980 - 1982, it is undergoing constant renovation in order to sustain the high standards it is reputed for, while specifically trying to maintain the distinctive Club InterContinental style.
It is with regret we are informed that you did not find the selection of food provided in the Club floor lounge sufficient. As you kindly mention, lunch is not part of what is offered to the Club floor residents. Should one whish to enjoy a full lunch menu our award winning Café Zoe restaurant operates on a daily basis.
However, what we do provide is breakfast, freshly cut canapés and hot appetizers. Additionally, tea and coffee along with cake, muffins and cookies are offered throughout the day while a wide selection of beverages and alcoholic drinks provided at the open bar in the evening.
Furthermore, should we have the opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel in the future, please contact any of the staff at the Front Desk or at the Club InterContinental reception in order to direct to the Syngrou-Fix metro station via a direct route along Syngrou Avenue which allows you to stay on the same side of the road.
Once more thank you for your kind comments and feedback and we look forward to your return at the Athenaeum InterContinental.

the hotel was excellent . the rooms were extra clean but i didnt like the pillows . they were too thick for me and caused me a bad neckache. the best thing about the hotel was a free bus which was leaving the hotel every half an hour to the sintagmat square of athens and took the passengers back from there to the hotel. this square was within walking distance of the parliment building, and PLAKA . and I can surely tell that that the breakfast was so good that I will always remember it as one of the remarkable points of our trip.
there were no free internet not at the lobby nor at the rooms.

Lucky enough to stay here after purchasing 3 nights w/club access and breakfast and 1 dinner at Premiere from the South Beach Wine & Food Festival auction. The hotel offers shuttle service to the city center all day and into the evening, free. The room was very large and housekeeping took great care to move the beds together and make into one large bed. The staff was very helpful with all questions and gave suggestions or maps for anything we were looking for.

The most pleasurable part of our trip to Athens was this hotel.

We weren't tremendously impressed by the city itself, but after seeing the sites all day, the five star accomodations and concierge service gave us lobby art, creature comforts and a good nights rest. The hotel is two blocks from a light rail stop which will bring you directly to the center of town. Otherwise, it is about a 15-20 minute walk to the Plaka. We didn't use any of the additional services of the hotel, like laundry service, the mini-bar or the restaurant, as we come to expect bloated prices of such things at luxury hotels. We enjoyed the plush pillows, Korres bath products and after moving the coffee table, I had more than enough room for a yoga practice. We used the gym once, they gave us late check-out and stowed our bags upon departure. All and all, it was a lovely stay.

Our last stay at an Intercontinental was in Moorea, which was very pleasant. This experience has reaffirmed my confidence in their brand, and I will strongly consider staying with IC again.

Tip: There is an inexpensive taverna around the corner to the right when you exit the hotel where we ate breakfast every morning. The omelets there were large and tasty, and though the staff didn't speak much english (and since this was the beginning of our journey in Greece, we hadn't yet picked up much Greek).
