I must say that i've been staying here mainly for buiness, for me the only thing that really was itching me and my colleagues was the internet from the lobby and from room. I am from Romania and we know that we have the best internet in Europe, but you expect at least normal conditions. I don't know how they expect us to pay 14 euros for 8 hours of wifi at 5 Mbps, or 30 euros per day. Guys, in Romania we have FREE at 100Mbps. Please change it!!!

Dear GeorgeS932013,

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Athenaeum InterContinental when visiting Athens and for taking the time to share your feedback. We have noted your comments about the cost of internet connection and would like to assure you that our prices are, in fact, lower than those charged by our competitors in Athens. However, may we also take this opportunity to suggest that you join our IHG Rewards Club loyalty program, as one of its benefits is complimentary internet access for all members from 1 January 2014 worldwide. At our hotel, we have exceptionally offered complimentary internet access to all members from 1 July, 2013. We thank you again for your comments and look forward to welcoming you back to Athens and the Athenaeum InterContinental.
Yours sincerely,

Martha Pallis

I've been staying at this locally well-regarded hotel - for both business and pleasure - on and off since the early 1980's. It's a good R&R property, particularly after an exhausting overseas flight. Rooms are spacious and sound-proofed, the bathrooms are well-equipped and the beds are comfortable. There are a number of dining and imbibing options. If truly worn-out, one could easily spend a day or two recuperating here without ever stepping through the front doors. The extensive breakfast buffet is one of the best in the city and very popular with Athenians - and their children...

When built, all the guest rooms had views of the Acropolis. Sadly, some years ago, a big, ugly, black-glass office building went up next door and blocked the previously splendid view from many rooms. If you want to open your drapes in the morning and gaze across to the Parthenon, be sure to request a room with a view.

The InterContinental's location is, as other reviewers have pointed-out, not ideal (for tourists, at least). Syngrou Avenue is a busy, busy thoroughfare, and not a particularly nice one, particularly for strolling into Athens' center. There is a hotel shuttle bus and a street car stop is several blocks away.

The hotel swimming pool is not large and feels hemmed-in by high walls. Bathers may find themselves the floor show for those enjoying breakfast or lunch on the opposite side of floor-to-ceiling windows.

My favorite feature is the roof-top, outdoor Premiere Bar and Restaurant, which has beautiful views of the city and Acropolis. On a warm evening this is a magical place to sit as the sun drops into the Aegean, a welcome breeze springs up, and the lights come on across Athens.

I recommend the better-situated (and more affordable) Hotel Athens Gate more often than I do The InterContinental Athenaeum, but sometimes this large, chain hotel is convenient for me (or a special rate is being offered!) and when I return I'm never disappointed.

Room Tip: Request a room with an Acropolis view.

I stayed at this Hotel in April 2013 for 5 nights. Checking in was very nice, the staff was helpful and friendly. The hotel seemed to be geared more for the business traveler and felt and looked more like an office building. The room was very nice and modern and clean and comfortable. The location was not the best for the vacationer, but there was a bus that was available to transport us to the city center and had several stops along the way. We were disappointed that the pool was closed, even though it was only April and the weather was hot during our stay.

Dear CookiesLady12,

Thank you for selecting the Athenaeum InterContinental to stay with your family during your holidays in Athens.
We would like to thank you for taking the time to share your kind comments about the hotel facilities and staff. May I take this opportunity to inform you that as our swimming pool is located outdoors and operates in the summer months, we usually open the pool in May, depending on the outside temperature. As this year the weather was unusually warm during the month of April, we decided to open the pool for operation on the 20th of April and regretfully you must have missed its operation only for a few days.
Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future.

Yours sincerely,

A straightforward welcome and good busboy service to the room which is large and comfortable.
Soft beds and easy access to the net.. Hotels used to make a good living from phone bills and pay channels. Now add the net to that list. Not cheap. Breakfast outstanding. All the service from lobby to restaurant very pleasant and very helpful. I would stay here again.

I came here for a work event at a nearby conference venue. The hotel is comfortable, large, the staff at the guest services and reception were really friendly and helpful.

The rooms are very nice, but not 5* - I'd say 3-4* facilities (pool was closed, breakfast was rushed and you pay for wi-fi?). House keeping was efficient and to a high standard, the noise wasn't too bad.

The prices are definitely 5*, looking at around 6.50 for a small cola, and the service in the bar was very underwhelming. We went for a drink and I asked fro a menu for drinks - soft drinks, coffee etc... I was given the cocktail menu - when I explained what I wanted it was blank looks and a walk off.

Breakfast was amusing - at one point the waitress removed my friends plate whilst she still had the fork in her mouth - a clear sign we were in their way.

The location is around 1.5 miles (walking) from the main square. There is a shuttle service there free from the Hotel which is quite good, the location is not the best - quite a number of adult shops around and I didn't feel 100% comfortable walking around the area on my own.

The hotel has a chain feel to it, quite friendly in some areas but probably not my first choice when I return to Athens.

Room Tip: Ask to overlook the pool, the noise on the road side is not too bad.

I spent three nights here for a conference. The hotel is situation in rather ugly part of Athens so it's a welcome sight when you walk into the lobby and it's modern, clean and spacious. The reception staff were welcoming and efficient and my room was clean and comfortable. The double glazing kept the high level of road noise out but it did mean that you couldn't really get any fresh air in the room unless you were prepared to put up with the noise. And happily the shower was powerful too.

There was a good choice at breakfast and the buffet lunches were excellent with a wide mix of hot and cold, all very tasty and fresh and lovely friendly staff.

Bar prices are as you'd expect - HIGH!

The free shuttle bus to and from the centre of town was very useful and the concierge was very helpful and recommended an excellent restaurant to us (Strofi).

The conference rooms were fine (Lamda, VIP, Ballroom) even if they didn't have any natural light. The chairs were comfortable and there was always plenty of water available.

I was here when there was another much bigger conference on and at times the hotel was really busy. However, it's so large that it coped well and the staff seemed confident and skilled in handling such large groups.

So all in all great for conferences but you'd get lost in this hotel if you wanted a city break.
