“Nice Hotel; Priority Club Members Beware”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

While this is overall a very nice hotel, Priority Club members must be forewarned of several things (which, to me, make other hotel programs usable in Athens a better deal -- which, also to me, is quite alarming since you would think they would value their most loyal customers the most and make the platinum membership in their own rewards program competitively advantageous -- bad business prevails I guess): (a) NOT in the best location/neighborhood (busy business street that is not in the City centre), although they provide free shuttle service to the centre and there is a tram nearby; (b) they do NOT provide complimentary room upgrades like other platinum rewards programs; (c) their rewards rooms are their worst rooms (""Superior") and NOT their better rooms ("Deluxe" or "Club"); (d) they do NOT provide complimentary internet (and, in fact, while charging comparable to other upper-end hotels, make it a very expensive add-on); and (e) they do NOT provide any sort of complimentary American or continental breakfast (once again, while charging comparable to other upper-end hotels, this makes it a very expensive add-on). For my money, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, etc. all treat their most loyal customers better than Intercontinental does, and, therefor, are the places to stay in Athens.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms or better or don't stay.

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for choosing the Athenaeum InterContinental to redeem points for a reward night stay in Athens last month. As a valued Priority Club member, your feedback is important and assists us in identifying certain areas in need of improvement. While it is true that the benefits of the Platinum Priority Club Rewards membership, such as a room upgrade, do not apply when one reserves a reward night stay, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you about another loyalty program, InterContinental Ambassador, that is valid at InterContinental hotels and resorts. This is a benefits program and offers members a number of important benefits such as guaranteed room upgrades, guaranteed late check-out at 4pm, free weekend-night, to name just a few. As you are already a Priority Club member, you may retain the same membership number and enrol as an Ambassador member to receive the benefits. Moreover, when making a reservation for our hotel, one has the option of reserving room rates that include breakfast and/or internet access. We thank you again for your valuable feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental on a future visit to Athens.

The hotel is nice located not far away from the center of Athens, but also not too close to it. The distance to the beach is acceptable and museums or sightseeings are within 10 minutes drive.Staff is very friendly, especially in the Spa. The hotel looks like it needs renovation in certain areas such as Club Lounge. Nevertheless, from the Club Lounge there is a very nice view to Acropolis and St. George.

In Athens on business & decided to try this place, instead of my usual hotel. First impressions are obtained from the surrounding neighbourhood, which is not very nice. I wouldn't walk around here on my own at night. Hotel lobby is big & the welcome is warm, professional and friendly. As with everywhere in Greece, English is spoken as standard. The room I had was also spacious, so felt comfortable from that perspective but it is partly carpeted, which I really don't like (the rest is marble which is lovely - why not throughout entire room?). Bathroom doesn't have separate shower but can make do with shower over bath. Korres products in bathroom are a little luxury & absolutely the best I've ever used. Love these products so much, I stock up at Athens airport every time I fly out! Free wi-fi is available & works well. But overall it's a big hotel, which lacks a bit of individuality or quirky characteristics, and the area lets it down somewhat.

Athens can seem a bit chaotic, but this hotel has all the amenities you'd want to counter that, feeling like a protected enclave. It has the feeling of a business hotel, so I just found it a good pit stop before proceeding on to one of the Greek islands—so much so that I stayed their again on my way back home. It's not that I was floored by the rooms or hotel restaurants, but it does provide convenient accommodations that don't have any unpleasant surprises, and it's well-located.

Have just returned from a luxurious weekend in this hotel. We had paid for a room giving access to the club lounge and we were directed to this lounge for check-in. We had a room on the 9th floor with a view across to the Acropolis. The double bed was huge as it was 2 single beds put together presumably with a mattress topper as there was no gap between them and was very comfortable. We tried to watch a film in our room on the Friday evening but unfortunately it wasn't working. Breakfast in the club lounge had a very good selection of hot and cold dishes. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks were available all day, with cakes and cookies in the afternoon. From 6.00 - 9.00p.m. there was wine, a couple of hot appetisers, various tiny bites and biscuits and cheese.- not as extensive as in some other Intercontinental club lounges but quite adequate. Our eyes were always drawn across to the floodlit Acropolis. All the staff in the club lounge were extremely helpful, friendly and professional.
Cafe Vienna in the lobby has a lovely atmosphere with a pianist playing in the evening. I enjoyed a massage in the spa and you could use the sauna and steam room before any treatments but it would have been nice to just have some comfortable chairs to relax on after a full day sightseeing.
The hotel is away from the main tourist area in quite a run-down area but we made good use of the free shuttle, being dropped off the first morning nearer to the Acropolis and being picked up each day from Syntagma Square. It is worth getting to the Acropolis early in the morning as even in the winter it was getting very crowded as we were making our way down. The 12 euro ticket gives access to all the main historical sites so is excellent value. The Plaka area is good for cafes and souvenir shops.
Overall, a good base for a luxury weekend.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for access to the club lounge.

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Athenaeum InterContinental when visiting Athens earlier this month for a luxury weekend break. Having read the detailed account of your stay, we are pleased to learn that your experience at our hotel was an enjoyable one and that you particularly appreciated the breathtaking view of the Acropolis from your room and our Club InterContinental lounge. We are, however, sorry that you were unable to watch a movie from your room due to technical reasons and would like to express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this caused you. Once again, we thank you for your recommendation and look forward to welcoming you back to Athens and the Athenaeum InterContinental.

Good location, poor service, and not good value. But the rooms are in need of a facelift.. Walls of room are dull and dreary and carpet is worn. We know Athens is going through tough times but the image does befit the brand.. Enjoy the food available outside rather than stay in. ..................................................................

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for staying with us whilst travelling to Athens on business last December. Guest satisfaction is our primary concern and we regret that on this occasion we were unable to fulfill this commitment. We have noted your comment about the level of service you received and would like to express our sincere apologies for the disappointment caused to you. Lapses in our usually high standards of service are indeed rare and we appreciate any feedback that will assist us in further improving upon our standards. May we also take this opportunity to inform you that the most recently renovated rooms at our hotel are our Deluxe rooms, as you may wish to reserve such a room on your next visit to our hotel. We thank you for your valuable feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental on your next visit to Athens.

We reserved two rooms for our family. Both were spacious and clean. A little outdated, but nothing that bothered us. We were disappointed they charged for WIFI (very pricey) and decided not to buy it. Any cafe in Athens has free WIFI for the asking and that is how we checked email, facebook, etc. during our stay. Super delicious breakfast buffet - truly something for everyone! Staff was very nice, security guard at the door at all times. We had to take shuttle to Plaka area, but we were happy to stay a little farther from the hustle/bustle. We usually did not wait for the shuttle to return and it was about 5 euros to take a taxi back, which was worth it at the end of the day for us. It was close to highway, but noise was not a problem. We were there in December, so we did not try pool. Restaurants inside hotel were quite expensive, so we did not dine there since there are so many wonderful choices in the city.
Would stay there again in a heartbeat if we return to Athens.
