Have just returned from a stay in this wonderful hotel ! Initially we booked for 3 nights, but due to our enjoying so much, we extended this to a 7 night stay !
Our arrival in Athens , unfortunatley got off to a poor start, due to the fact we were ripped off by the 'friendly' taxi driver. I travel worldwide & feel particularly dumb that I was taken in by this.
There were signs at the airport showing fares from the airport to Athens centre set at 35 euros.
When we got in the cab , the driver switched meter on and off we went, he was very chatty, pointing out different places etc. On arrival at the hotel, we drove up a side road, and he dropped us at what looked like the back of the hotel. There were bollards around , so we assumed the main entrance may of been blocked ? Anyhow, he dropped us off with bags , I offered 40 euros, and was told it was 75 euros !!! When we questioned this, he said that fare only applied to trips into the centre of Athens ! Grudgingly we paid,, but unfortunatley for the driver, I took his number plate. He actually drove off with his boot raised, thinking I would not be able to see his number plate.
When we got to the main entrance ( round the corner) and spoke with concierge staff, they informed us that we had been ripped off, this was a coomon practice. When I said I had taken his number plate, they were delighted ! The concierge reported him, got his mobile phone number and spoke to him, we raised a police report & apparantly, he could lose his licence for 6 months....so be warned !
Anyhow, after this , everything was superb ! We had booked a room on the Club Intercontinental level, we were shown to the elevator and directed to the 8th floor check in lounge.
We were greeted warmly , efficiently checked in and advised of all the benefits of the Club Level and given keys to our room.
The room was huge, brightly furnished in blues/whites , featured a HUGE king size bed, flat screen TV ( limited English channels) a full sitting area , with 3 seater Sofa and arm chair, coffee table.
The bathroom was well equipped with a lovely powerful shower over the bath, fluffy towels, bathrobes, slippers and lovely Korres toiletries.
We had a view over a road, but the room was absoulutely quiet.
The room was spotlessly clean and serviced twice daily. The room has tea/coffee facilities and iron and ironing board facility too.
The Club lounge offers , up to 1 hour free internet per room per day, breakfast, featuring fruits, pastries, juices, yoghurts, cold meats, greek pastries, various hot items, including eggs, different variety each day, bacon, sausages etc....everything you could ask for ! Excellent tea/coffee available, which was delivered to your table. We liked to eat out on the terrace, which had lovely views over the Acropolis. Throughout the day, soft drinks, tea, coffee and water , along with snacks, such as canapes , biscuits , cake and fruit were constantly available .
From 1800-2100 , it was Campari hour(s) !!! Well , thats what we called it ! There was every spirit you could think of, sparkling wine, red, white wines, along with salad, various canapes, cheese board, hot kebabs, which varied daily, along with usual soft drinks and waters !!! All very nice, and it was all 'help yourself' !!!
The atomsphere was lovely, and the staff here are AMAZING ! We didn't come across a bad one !
They take pride in their work , are always smiling, friendly and very efficient !
The hotel itself, is very comfortable, I think in an excellent location , a 20 min walk will bring you to Syntagma Square, there is a metro station, a 10 min walk away maximum, and navigating your way on the subway is EASY !!! Especially with help from the wonderful staff in the lounge !
Due to our experience with the arrival taxi, we were dubious about using taxis again , so we vowed to use public transport where possible, and this was efficient, clean and cheap !
The hotel has a lovely pool area, again great staff, who will bring you iced water as often as you like, comfortable sunloungers and lovely 'chill out' music playing softly in the back ground, on our stay there most days, we had pool pretty much to ourselves !!!
The hotels gym is excellent, perfect temperature, lots of equipment and looks brand new.
On our wet day, we took advantage of the hotel's SPA.......SUPERB !!! For a charge of 15 euros pp you can use this wonderful facility, including , individual whirlpool baths, steam, sauna , warm beds, rain showers etc......beautiful and very relaxing.
There are a couple of 'eateries' close to the hotel, one is a traditional family run Greek taverna at the rear of the hotel, serving the usual Greek fare, very fresh, and cheap !
On our last night, we went to an Italian , a short walk from the hotel, this was excellent, lovely staff, freshly cooked pasta and pizzas, great atmosphere and reasonably priced too.
We ate in the Plaka area twice, again this was enjoyable.
For our return to Athens airport, the hotel offered to arrange a transfer for us for 40 euros, which was added to our bill, which we took advantage of !
We were picked up on time and driven a lovely scenic route back to the airport, ending our holiday in comfort and peace of mind !!!
Take yourself to this lovely hotel, and enjoy the Club level with all its benefits !
