“Sad to leave”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

I have just returned from a two night stay on business - my third visit to the hotel this year. i love it here and it just feels like my home in Athens - whether on business or with family. It is large and at risk of being impersonal but what makes it so special are the staff.

It is rare in Athens, particularly at 5* hotels to find friendly staff. Here, there appears to be real pride in their work and this is a superb reflection on management. I had problems on each of my previous two visits. One related to babysitting being booked at the wrong time, meaning that I potentially missed a family engagement, and the second was (despite advertising availability of a 3 hour pressing service 24 hours a day), my clothes were not returned in a timely manner - giving cause for panic!
Problems will occur. What makes a good hotel is the way they are dealt with. In each of these situations, guest services put the matter right in a re-assuring way and made the appropriate recompense - in the case of babysitting (seeing how stressed my wife was) the Guest Relations Manager went over and above her call of duty to ensure we were happy.
I like the location - in a residential part of town and 4 stops on the tram (or a trip on the complimentary bus) to Syntagma Square - or a 15 minute walk to the Acropolis and to shops/restaurants. The concierge is fantastic - really anxious to ensure you get the best out of your stay in Athens.
There are other Athens hotels that I have stayed at. Some are in better locations, some have an indoor pool, some have larger outdoor pools. Nowhere is perfect. But, overall, I love this place and can't think of anywhere else I would ever wish to stay. Extras aren't cheap but are in line with Athens prices. Despite being there on business, I wanted to stay an extra day and was sad to leave. My schedule will bring me back in March - but I will do all I can to come earlier.

I particularly look forward to a Beer in the Bar (served at a temperature which is perfect - in an iced glass) by a superb barman who remembered me from my last visit, the friendly staff, excellent service, expansive (although expensive) buffet breakfast and the dedication and professionalism of the team on the Club Floor - thank you Theodoros for making my stay so welcoming.

It is so rare for a large, chain hotel to give the feeling of warmth and recognition that I experience here on each visit. I look forward to being back and recommend the hotel to visitors on either business or pleasure.

Due to the riots downtown, we were moved from the hotel be booked (The Grande Bretagne) to the InterContinental. The move was a bummer. BUT, the hotel was fine despite the smell from smokers. The room was clean and decent size. My parents had to be moved once b/c they felt their room smelt like a smoking room. The first night my room was fine, but the 2nd night the smoker smell came in through the vent from another room. Nasty. I did like the breakfast buffet. The gym was small but clean and the equipment was good. I've read other reviews that say the location is awful and it's actually not. While it's not downtown, since the weather was nice we decided to walk back from the Plaka (the shopping area) to the hotel and it was no more than a mile. If again in Athens, I would try again to stay at the Grande Bretagne but for this time, being that we didn't have much choice, this was fine.

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments regarding your recent stay at the Athenaeum InterContinental. Guest satisfaction is our primary concern and any comments that help us maintain the high standards for which InterContinental is known are warmly welcomed. We have noted your comment about the discomfort you experienced from the smell of smoke in your room and would like to express our sincere apologies. While we have dedicated non-smoking floors, on rare occasions, guests who occupy rooms on these floors do not obey the non-smoking sign resulting in the smell of smoke in the adjoining rooms. In such cases, we ensure that the rooms are thoroughly cleaned and aired as well as take the necessary action to ensure that the guest in question will not cause a similar problem in the future. We thank you again for your valuable feedback and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental on your next visit to Athens.

You wouldn't know you were in Athens - location is awful, a walk to city centre is along dispiriting dirty and smelly avenue. The place completely lacks in character, just another big American hotel transplanted to Europe. Service is OK, food unexceptional. Of course, it has all the things needed for business meetings, rooms are big and fairly clean. Their charges for internet though are ridiculous - how can a business venue not provide free wifi in 21st century is beyond me.

We have stayed at the InterContinental Athenaeum many times. Being an Intercontinental
"Ambassador", we were upgraded to a gorgeous one bedroom, one and one/half bath suite, with a large terrace with a splendid view of the Acropolis. Although we had been to the Parthenon many times before, this was especially welcome to us, as the Acropolis was surrounded by demonstrators, and the attraction was closed to the public. The premier of China was also staying at the Hotel, and so security was wonderful. It is also very important to note that the windows are double-paned, and so there is never any street noise! We have stayed on Syntagma Square, also many times, and I definitely choose the InterContinental over the "top luxury" hotels on the Square. I choose it for its' wonderful location (with shuttles every half hour to downtown); its' clean, quiet and beautiful rooms and suites; the wonderful food in both the breakfast restaurant, and the gorgeous rooftop restaurant; and the great staff and service. You can't get better than this in Athens!!! We will be staying there again in less than 2 weeks, before our Oceania "Marina" Mediterranean cruise. It's wonderful.....

Room Tip: Corner suites have the huge terraces overlooking the Parthenon. Just gorgeous!

We spent the last two days of an 11 day Mediterranean trip at the InterContinental in Athens. The hotel is pleasantly furnished, with large, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The intercontinental is close enough for site seeing, located a fairly short distance (15 minutes by foot) from the Plaka, and the historical sites such as the Acropolis. The hotel does provide a shuttle that drops off near the city center every hour, which was very helpful. The hotel features 2 restaurants. CafeZOE, was a nice restaurant that we ate breakfast at each morning, which had a large buffet to pick from. The "Premiere" restaurant was booked both nights so I can't provide a review for that. There were only a few local restaurants available, and I wouldn't recommend any of them. We ended up dining in the Plaka most of the time, which has a multitude of choices. Over all a very nice place to stay in Athens.

Room Tip: Non-smokers avoid the 4th floor.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the InterContinental in Athens before we headed to Santorini for 5 days. The first person you see when you arrive is the "doorman" who is very friendly and helpful and always has a smile on his face. As well, the concierge was very helpful and answered any questions that we had regarding transportation, local restaurants, etc.

Our room was amazing. Even though we got a great deal through Priceline ($125/night) we were given a beautiful Junior Suite, which included a huge bedroom, a dining room, beautiful bathroom, and a separate, fully equipped kitchen. We thought that since we got such a good deal that we would get a standard room.

We would strongly recommend going to the Roof Top restaurant and bar. The view of the city and the Acropolis is amazing, and the service is outstanding. We didn't stay for dinner but were treated like gold just while we were having drinks. All in all it was a great experience, and we look forward to going back.
