“Roof Top Restaurant with great view of Acropolis at Night”
Reviewed July 5, 2010

I recommend the Hotel Stanley in Athens. Good value for the money. Friendly desk staff made our time in Athens very enjoyable--especially Fotos, a personable gentlemen who made our stay at the Stanley a pleasant experience. The roof top restaurant is wonderful and the night time views of the Acropolis are an extra bonus. There is also a pool on the roof! The full breakfast, included, is outstanding compared to most of the continental type offerings at other hotels.

We stayed at the Stanley Hotel with our teenaged daughters for 3 nights, and found the hotel to be an excellent value. We had stayed here 25 years go, and found that the accomdations were pleasantly updated during our absense (for the 2004 Olympics.) This is rated as a 3-star hotel, and I find tht this is accurate. We did not spend to much time in the hotel itself, except for sleeping and breakfast, both of which were more than adequate. The metro is extremely convenient, and will get a traveller, virtually anywhere in Athens and Piraeus, including to and from the airport. The beds are comfortable, but stiff, and bathroom is of a reasonable size.

My wife and I went for our honeymoon in Greece and just got back home from a 3 night stay at the Hotel Stanley.

Check-in was a breeze, where we were given our key-card and a tourist map of Athens.

The room was much larger than we expected. It had 2 single beds put together so it more-less made it into a Queen size bed. The mattresses were very comfortable (a nice plus after the 4 nights we spent on what felt like a bag of marbles on the cruise ship we were on!)

The rooms were kept very clean, and the staff was friendly and efficient. Our room had a small flat-screen TV mounted on the wall, and a powerful AC unit which is nice in the heat of Athens. It also has an in-room electronic safe for your valuables, and a small bar fridge to keep your drinks cold for you.

Our bathroom was immaculate, and it has a very convenient 120V outlet for North American electrical devices. No need to buy an expensive converter!

What I probably liked the most about the hotel is that it's located right beside a Metro station. This easily, and cheaply connected us to all the major attractions Athens has to offer. For 3 euros you could buy a day pass that was good for unlimited travel for 24 hours... I highly recommend it!

TIPS FOR A MORE PLEASANT STAY:
The rooms are going to seem noisy as you can hear all the traffic in the busy square below the hotel. The doors are actually double doors, and for some reason the maid always leaves the outside door wide open. It isn't very obvious unless you look for it. Closing the 2nd door makes the noise MUCH less audible.

Breakfast was included with our room. It is not obvious at first, and the sign outside the restaurant door for some reason says "American Breakfast, 10 euros". I don't know why it says that because breakfast was free with the room... and there was nothing there to collect money anyway. The sign fooled us one day and we went out and paid for breakfast elsewhere, so don't fall into the same trap we did. The breakfast wasn't very good, but the one we paid for outside the hotel was no better.

If we were to ever return to Athens (which I doubt we would) then we would definitely give the Hotel Stanley our return business.

The staff are very friendly or helpful but the hotel meets your basic needs and more. We had an AMAZING view of the Acropolis from our balcony which made it perfect. The hotel food was satisfying and the restaurant staff were pleasant. They charge you for internet access so be prepared. The hotel is located directly above the Metro station which is exactly 4 train stops from the Acropolis. It's approximately a 10 minute train ride and we recommend getting an all day train pass for only 3 Euro for the entire day. The rooms are substantially larger than the rooms found on the islands and more modern. They offer a TUB, shampoo, shower cap, Q-tips which you DO NOT find on the islands so come prepared.

We stayed at the Stanley hotel with a tour group and after reviewing comments, booked an upgraded room. We were glad that we did and the upgrade was a nice room, with a nice large bathroom. However, the weather was warm and the air conditioning doesn't work very well. You don't want to open the windows because you sit on a main busy street. All of the rooms smell like smoke. I believe that smoking is definately part of the greek culture. And watch your belongings. Out of of group, one lady had a necklace stolen off of her neck and we were pick pocketed on the subway.
The hotel staff is nice and the hotel does a good job with the breakfast meal.

Just returned from a trip to Athens with 2 nights spent at the Stanley Hotel and 1 night at the Oscar Hotel. The cost was comparable, but the experience differed greatly. The shower was incredibly tiny with no door and only a curtain - so small, in fact, that it was necessary to continually "peel" the curtain off the side of your body as you were showering. The bed mattresses were very hard; not at all comfortable. Staff were not very helpful. You had to pay for wi-fi as well. On the positive side, the breakfast offerings were good and the room was fairly clean.

Being my first trip to Athens I wanted to make sure I got to see as much of the culture and history as possible on a limited budget. The Stanley Hotel is ideally placed as it is not too close to Syntagma (centre of Athens) but is only a few short train stops away. The sound of the roundabout was initially a little off putting as my room overlooked it but it just became part of the experience and didn't cause too much annoyance especially with the balcony door closed. The decor was a little dated in some places but the room was very comfortable and clean as was the nice en suite bathroom. The roof terrace is elegant and secluded with a good sized swimming pool with an incredible view of the Acropolis, I would go back just for that! The staff were very helpful and the breakfast in the restaurant was without a doubt the best I've had in any hotel I've stayed in anywhere. Visitors should be aware parking is extremely limited around the hotel but public transport is quick, convienient, easy to use and not very expensive. From the bus/train stops, everywhere is within walking distance, in my opinion there is no point in hiring a car. When I visited, there was a great little cafe/takeaway place just across the roundabout down one of the roads a little way, that did brilliant chicken/lamb gyros. I think it was called Samantha's. Don't know if it's still there but if it is the food is good and affordable. If not or you prefer to stick with KFC, although why when in Greece you would want to I don't know, one stop on the train or about 10 mins walk towards Syntagma there is all the fast food you could want. Visitors to the area must visit the Plaka, it is a unique shopping experience, even just for the atmosphere - to eat look for local tavernas down back alleys rather than eating where tourists go, It's far cheaper where the locals eat and possibly better. This is a fantastic place to sightsee if you are interested in places that date back to biblical times or there abouts. There are a number of other ancient building and temples which must be seen so get a guide book and if possible visit the Olympic Stadium and the beautiful National Gardens. Don't forget if you get time to see the Changing of the Guard. Trust me, this is NOT like Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. As for the hotel, The Stanley is one I shall definately be returning to. Happy travelling.
