Mono is a bistro style restaurant and tapas bar (open from noon till late midnight every day) in Plaka area near Mitropoli Church. The executive chef is French and gives a French twist at the menu, but it is still Greek-Mediterranean using fresh ingredients very well prepared and presented. Certain mains are served on blackboard style plates like the ones we were being served in Paris on our last visit...
Having said that food is very good (menu changes regularly) I would like to stay at the main reason we chose to visit it again and again: the wine list with very interesting wines (white, rose, red and also a prosecco and a sparkling), most of them served by the glass! So we could choose different wine with first course and different with the second!
On our summer visit we had 2 glasses of white wine (Santorini Assyrtiko) with salad and 2 red (Naoussa Xinomavro) with meat dishes (excellent bio chicken with wild rice and tasty lamb), paying around 60 euros. Yesterday, we tried the new winter menu and with a prosecco, a glass of white wine and 2 glasses of rose, sharing a delicious pumpkin risotto (huge portion) and enjoying 2 perfectly grilled tuna steaks with warm chicory-apple salads the bill for 2 came at 65! Not cheap especially under the new economical status of our country... They should lower the prices a bit...
Bottled water comes without asking (2 euros) and also the bread (1.5 euro per person), but everything is of a good quality. The desserts look nice and cost 6-8 euros. We haven't had desserts there yet since we were usually full, maybe next time we'll share one.
Service was very good too, both the waitress and the sommelier knew about food and wine, very professional and polite! Especially the sommelier, Mr Giannis Makris, is very experienced, helpful and not pushy! The waitress tried a bit to make us order more but we denied politely and that was it. She is friendly and smiley, so even if she recommends more dishes you can still NOT order without feeling awkward.
We live in Athens, we don't like tourist traps (and the area is full of them) and we will visit again Mono restaurant!
