I visited Athens for the fourth time this past August with my husband and two teenage daughters. Because of amazing airfares, we decided to do a budget excursion to Athens and Naxos. My husband and I, and two teenage daughters stayed in two budget internal rooms for $150 a night per room. These rooms were very comfortable, clean and quiet- I will definitely stay here the next time I travel to Athens. I have also recommended this hotel to family, and my sister and her daughter stayed here this past October.

This hotel has an unbeatable location. It is located across from the Temple of Zeus; I guess it's location would be the Plaka but it is quite close to the Acropolis area as well. Upon our arrival in Athens, we took the express bus from the Athens airport to Syntagma Square. From this square, it is an easy 15 minute walk to the Athens Gate Hotel. The staff was very welcoming and greeted us with cold glasses of water and a tray of sweets. We arrived before check-in time ( at about 10:30 am) but our rooms were ready. The rooms were very simply designed and decorated- we did not have great views but we only paid $150 a night per room- great views are to be had for more money. I found our rooms to be very comfortable- I have no complaints at all about them.

A special extra that this hotel offers is a superb roof garden restaurant/bar where breakfast (included in our room rate) was offered daily. My husband and I also enjoyed ending our evening with a nightcap and the great views.

This hotel is a great value- very comfortable, clean rooms with an amazing location. I hadn't been completely satisfied with the other Athens Hotels that I stayed at but this one is a winner!

We spent 4 wonderful nights at the Athens Gate Hotel. Excellent location. It was within walking distance to many attractions and transportation. The on-site restaurant was surprisingly delightful and the complimentary breakfast was excellent. We had a room and balcony on the 7th floor which overlooked the Temple of Zeus and it was a wonderful view. Would recommend Athens Gate without hesitation.

Stayed at the Athens Gate at the beginning and end of our trip to Greece - 5 nights total. The location is fabulous, the rooftop restaurant where breakfast is served (included) has amazing views of the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. [The breakfast was also fabulous.] The rooms are lovely, and the reception was friendly and helpful. We either walked or took the subway - around the corner - every day to different sights in Athens. The view of the Acropolis at night from the hotel's roof top restaurant is not to be missed.

If you are looking for a moderately priced hotel, with a great restaurant, with a great view, and a staff that DOES care, this is it. Additionally, the location is perfect to visit all the sites. We stayed two nights pre cruise although we booked directly with the hotel, end of October, 2009. Rooms a bit small. Try to get 6th or 7th floors, room with balcony. Included breakfast wonderful as well, with great views of Acropolis and other sites.

Just wanna drop a quick summary for our stay in Athens Gate for 2 nights.

The good
Perfect location and minutes away from all the sites and plaka etc. Room was standard as in all most 4* hotels in Athens, its clean and decent. The buffet breakfast has good variety and freshly prepared. Restaurant has the best view of Acropolis and Temple of Zeus, the dinner was not bad either.

The area for improvement
Reception do not seem expecting your arrival, only after sometime that they realized you have a booking. They look like short of staff and so the "welcoming" factor is lacking. But if you have questions, they still are helpful. Well, for the amenities and service (no free internet) it provides, its kind of pricey.

We had our passports pickpocketed on the metro to the airport, when we thought we were leaving Athens for Istanbul! The staff at this hotel were beyond helpful with advice: particularly John - a Montrealer currently living and working there, with advice and directions to the Canadian Consulate (which came very much in handy, as the cab driver had no idea where the consulate was, but was able to get us to the Hilton, which is across the street); and the girls behind the desk, who made phone calls for us and allowed us use of the internet to send an email to our travelling companions who had gone on to Istanbul without us; AFTER they'd taken the time to look up the email adrdress of the hotel for us. All that documentation had been stolen with the passports!

They provided free baggage storage before and after check out hours. (We were there in both situations!)

Beyond that, the rooms are clean; balconies tiny - but they're there! There are 2 quaint 4 person max elevators; and the view from the rooftop is spectacular. The included breakfast was very good for all sorts of regional palates; and the hotel even provided us with coffee and a box breakfast the day we were flying out at an ungodly hour! Dinner was tasty, plentiful and a little pricy - but then there's that VIEW!

Rooms at the front with a view of the Temple of Olympian Zeus are noisy. Athens traffic continues all through the night. Rooms at the back lack any view, but are quieter - unless the dogs decide to communicate a lot!

Given our unfortunate metro experience, we could not have chosen a better hotel, in my opinion.
