“Great place unless you want to sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

The Athens Gate is very well situated near the Acropolis but is located on a major thoroughfare. We were on the 6th floor on the Temple of Zeus side of the hotel and had a terrible time with the noise. The hotel seems to have no sound proofing at all! One night a concert in the nearby park went on until late in the evening and could be heard easily in our room. On another night the city decided to repair the street in front of the hotel and the noise went on all night. Even with nothing out of the ordinary happening, the noise level made a good night's sleep difficult.

It was also ridiculous that WiFi was free only if you used it in the lobby or on the rooftop (where it was not turned on until noon, after the breakfast service). We stayed at 15 different hotels during a 5 week trip through Europe and this was the only one that didn't provide free WiFi in the rooms.

On the positive side, the staff was helpful with restaurant recommendations, etc. and the breakfast buffet offered lots of choices. Also, it is difficult to beat the views from the rooftop.

Room Tip: Try the Acropolis side rather than the Temple of Zeus side of the hotel.

The Athens Gate is a lovely hotel! We were in Greece for a week and only stayed there for our first two nights. Upon returning from Mykonos we wished we had rebooked with Athens Gate for the rest of the week. We asked for a room with a view and at no additional charge the hotel gave us a room with a view of Zeus' Temple which was beautiful at night. The roof top view of the Acropolis is absolutely stunning. The free breakfast every morning was amazing. Everything you could want for breakfast. The hotel is in walking distance from everything from shopping to dessert shops, cute curbside bars to wonderful affordable eateries. You can also walk to the bus stop which will take you directly to the airport for $5 Euro instead of taking a taxi. Just leave the airport and take X95. The final stop is Syntagma Square and the hotel is a 7 min walk from the bus station. We also walked from our hotel to tour the Acropolis and it's surrounding tour sites. Athens Gate is the place to stay and the reviews helped us to make our choice to stay here. I'm glad we did!

The Athens Gate is perfectly situated for a visit to Athens. It is in the heart of everything, 5 minutes from the Acropolis, across the street from the Temple of Zeus and near everything. Helpful and friendly staff, nice room (especially with the view of the Temple of Zeus), and the best view of Athens from the rooftop restaurant. Breakfast served on the rooftop daily - you can't get any better than watching the sun light up the Acropolis. Dinner at the restaurant was great too - absolutely can't beat watching the sun set and the Parthenon light up at dusk.

Room Tip: Definitely get a view of the Temple of Zeus!

Perfect location right next to the main sights meaning you can make the most of your time in Athens. The view from the roof is spectacular - Temple of Zeus on one side and the Acropolis on the other. A quick 5 minute walk to the Acropolis Museum and the Plaka area.

Good selection at breakfast, plenty of options to please all. Our room was at the back of the hotel so was nice and quiet but didn't have much of a view, however from speaking with other guests that no view equalled sleep free from traffic noise. Staff were helpful and assisted with airport transfers. Room temperature was great and aircon worked very well.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel are quieter

Rooms are a bit small, especially the bathroom....no free wifi in room is a real downer. The breakfast is great and you can't beat the location as it is central to all the sites, shops, restaurants, etc.

We stayed two nights at the hotel and the staff and accommodations were excellent. Breakfast was included in our our room rate and there was a good selection of things to eat and the view is spectacular from the roof top restaurant. The hotel rooms are clean and have a nice selection in the minibar. It was very close to the Acropolis and the Plaka .

Exceptionally well located, right across the street from Zeus's temple and a 10 minute walk to the Acropolis and the New Acropolis Museum. It is in the midst of literally 100's of restaurants of all types, and more souvenir shops than I ever imagined existed. It is located on a main thoroughfare so that taxis, buses, subways are all easily accessible.

About 30 minutes from the airport (a 35 Euro ride) it is also accessible from the airport by train.
Service is exceptionally friendly; everyone we encountered spoke fluent English.
Breakfast is included, and consists of pre-made scrambled eggs, pre-cooked fried eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage a variety of cold cuts, breads, fruits, cereals, and yogurts as well as coffee, tea and juices. Not the greatest breakfast, but certainly good enough. Breakfast is served on the Rooftop Garden which has amazing views of the Acropolis and Zeus's Temple and city views. You'll want to bring your camera there for breakfast and at night for drinks or dinner, when the sights are lit up. You can sit inside, or along the balcony outside.

The rooms are typical European, don't expect spaciousness. But it is clean, comfortable and we had no complaints at all. Minimalistic but comfortable. It includes a refrigerator mini-bar and our room (I think most rooms) had a balcony. Our balcony was facing a side street (that's OK, we weren't at the hotel for the views) but many face the Temple of Zeus. There are plenty of electrical outlets, decent lighting and the bathroom is larger than many European hotels with a good shower and vanity.

There is free wi-fi at night on the rooftop garden (watch where you sit, not all areas have good signal strength) and free wi-fi in the lobby (with good signal strength) all day long. The lobby is nicely appointed, large and comfortable. If you need a space to sit and use the wi-fi for a while, you will find the lobby accommodating. About the only negative (and you have to look hard for a negative) is that the elevators are small and a bit slow, but that's just nit-picking in an attempt to find something that is not right about this hotel.

We paid about $550 for 3 nights and I would consider this a great deal, especially considering the location (perfect) clean rooms and great service. Not the Ritz or Four Seasons; I wouldn't come here for my honeymoon or 25th wedding anniversary for example, but you definitely get your money’s worth and, as someone who typically stays at the Ritz or Four Seasons, I can say that I was very pleased with this hotel.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a balcony room facing the Temple of Zeus.
