We arrived at 2am worried that our room would be given away or that they would have forgotten about us. T the contrary, they welcomed us with cold water, Turkish delight and a seamless check in. We weren't there for probably all of 5 minutes and then taken to our rooms so we could pass out after a days work and evenings travel. The hotel is modern and clearly been refurbished recently, the rooms are a decent size and the bathrooms are a decent size too. I believe each room has a balcony and our room faced the Temple of Zeus which was directly opposite us - so much so that we very nearly did not go visit due to the uninterrupted view of its ground. Makes for great photos. The only difficulty facing this side is that you will get a fair amount of road noise - we were tempted to ask to be moved but we just kept forgetting to ask until we were already trying it I go to sleep.

The restraint upstairs (reviewed separately) also had rival views of the same temple Gardens and on the other side, the Acropolis. It is perfect for night time shots (with review in due course). The breakfast is pretty good with cooked options and some continental options including Greek pastries, yoghurt, honey and fruit.

The service / staff here is very knowledgeable and friendly. On more than one occasion they made reservations for us, they told us when we did not need bookings, gave us directions, helped organise ferries to Santorini, called taxis - it's hard to think what we would have done without them.

We would definitely return and the price of the rooms we thought were very competitive given the quality of the hotel. The location is also very central with about a 5-10 walk to the Plaka, same to the Parliament, about 15 to the entrance of the Aropolis and the same to Monastriki/Roman Agora. Great restaurants nearby and bars too.

We went to this hotel just recently in February. It was in the Times paper(UK paper) for the best 100 budget hotels in the world and got a great price to go out of season.

It was out of season and was upgraded to a superior room, as it was quiet, which was a great start. They also offered us water and on arrival.

This hotel has the best location in Athens. I have attached a picture to show you just how close it is to the Temple of Zeus and the Acropolis(the hotel is on the left of the picture). Restaurants in Plaka are a few minutes away as you walk behind the hotel.

The rooms are modern and have nice showers with flat screen TVs, so no problems there either

The rooftop restaurant is the other added bonus of this hotel. The view is amazing and we were even able to sit outside in February overlooking the whole of Athens. The only slight problem was the restaurant at night was closed, due to some problem with the electricity board, which was a shame as we wanted to eat there.

The breakfast is very good qualilty. With bacon, sausage, eggs(really nice runny ones) or pastries, greek yoghurt, fruit, cheeses, cold meats etc. Even the Juices were very fresh and the coffee very nice.

Hotel is 10-15 min walk from the bus stop where you get the X95 from/to the aiport for 5 euros each. There is no need to get a taxi....

Excellent location, very close to the Acropolis, Acropolis museum, syntagma square, the temple of Zeus and Plaka.
The views are amazing. From the rooftop restaurant/bar, you can see the Acropolis, Syntagma Square, the Temple of Zeus, which is right across from the hotel. From the room (facing the front of the hotel) there is a excellent view of this temple, amazing!
The staff are also very nice, smiley and accommodating. The reception gave us excellent tips on where to go, especially where to eat. They also gave us a free upgrade due to it being low season.
The food at the restaurant at the roof garden is very good. It is a Greek cuisine with an international twist.
Unfortunately, the wifi is not free (except for at the rooftop restaurant), however, there is free access to computers (with Internet) in the reception area.
In sum, I highly recommend it, and would definitely stay there again.

Standard good quality hotel. The room had a great view of the temple of Zeus... It's right opposite the hotel.  It's close to all the action - acropolis, syntagma, Plaka....
The roof top restaurant has great views of the acropolis hill, Parthenon, temple of Zeus, lysiskratos hill....
Am attaching a photo of the view of temple of Zeus from the room.
The rooms have a minimalistic feel to them.., black and white..Lighting is also muted. The rooms are spacious with a small corridor leading to the room.
The off season deals with an upgrade offer a great value.., when a budget based option is about € 25 lesser.. So better to opt for a 4 star in off season.
The only inconvenience is the limited Internet facilities ... Especially when almost everyone Is on a smart phone these days... The Internet on your device can only be used on the rooftop restaurant. They need to upgrade this offering..especially when every cafe offers free wifi .

Easy choice – stop reading all the endless reviews & just stay at the Athens Gate Hotel! I kept going back and forth about where to stay, and chose this one because it seemed family oriented and a good location. Right choice! My 10-yr-old daughter and I were alone this trip so security was very important, as well as cleanliness and a kind staff willing to answer all of our questions. We opted to take a taxi to/from the airport because I didn’t want to bring my daughter and luggage at odd hours on buses and metros. My favorite moment, which speaks to the Greek way of life, was when I was checking out at 4:00 a.m. and although my taxi was waiting, the man at reception told me the taxi could wait & that I needed to enjoy a cup of coffee first that they had prepared in the lobby for me! So I stood there inhaling hot coffee in my porcelain cup at a crazy early hour, loving these dear people who work at the hotel. They were family away from home – they seemed to really care about us.

PROS – loved walking through the Plaka on our way back to the hotel every day; right next to the Acropolis metro station; walking distance to Syntagma, Zeus, Acropolis, Filopappos Hill, and other places; removed from the loud commercial district of Syntagma; felt safer than the other districts; family friendly (had a 10-yr-old with me) forever patient staff; restaurant with great views; clean good sized room; wi-fi in restaurant and wired internet downstairs.

CONS – need to add free wi-fi to rooms; need manual on thermostat in rooms; beds are on the firm side (although this was good for my back, but not the most comfortable); would be nice to have a guide to restaurants in room (ie. there was a pizza delivery across the street that we didn’t find until a week later that my daughter loved).

RESTAURANT – best breakfast ever! We were always so full that we didn’t need to eat lunch. If you go early (at least in the winter), you’ll have the place nearly empty because Greeks get up late. We enjoyed coffee and hot chocolate in the evenings. They could have had a better bar type menu for in between meals – we would have ordered more food that way. We never ate full dinner there. The staff is great as usual.

ROOM – we had a room on the backside so no view, but I had read that these rooms were quieter & I have to agree that I preferred being off the back street than having a view with a loud Syntagma street below us. This is a loud city with motorcycles roaring all night. Our first night was the loudest, with protests and cars going almost all night; the rest of the week seemed much quieter. The backside does have a garbage truck that comes most nights between 2:30-3:15 a.m. but I put a pillow on my head & learned to go back to sleep (my daughter learned to sleep right through it) and they are efficient at getting it done quickly – note I had read about it so I wasn’t surprised.

TIPS: Make sure you know how to work the elevator (which Michael showed us upon our arrival), and also know how to work your room thermometer (which we had to ask about the second day); every time you open your balcony or take out your key card slot, the thermostat shuts off and has to be turned back on! Also, new to Americans, you have to put your key card into a slot in order to have power in your room; just keep your second card in there so that your lights and heat work upon returning.

Room Tip: Back street quieter than front street except for garbage truck in middle of night; this means sacrif...

Nice view of the acropolis from the rooftop restaurant. We have a room in front of hotel with a balcony and a view of Athens gate, but is kind of noisy when the door is open. If you could get a room in the back in an upper floor you could have a view of the acropolis. Wifi is just in the rooftop restaurant only. Breakfast is free and plenty of selection. Restaurant are plentiful nearby. Room rate was reasonable. Will stay again when in Athens again.

The location was perfect -- right across the street from the ruins, right beside the plaka, 10 minute walk to syntagma, government buildings, and bus stop. A great place for a short stay, but small room. Nice staff, nicely renovated, and great continental breakfast (great food) in the rooftop restaurant with a clear view of the Acropolis.
