“Worst neighborhood in central Athens”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2009

The room was ok, but just ok. Mosquitos come out of the bathrooms at night and there were blood stains on the walls where the last guest had killed a few. But as the hotel manager explained, unfortunately, the area around Amonia Square has gone very bad over the last 4 years. The area is now full of drug addicts, prostitutes, pick pockets and other deliquents. Always be careful on the subway, but when you come home at night after dinner, take a cab.

Looking for a last minute limited-budget few nights accommodation in Athens, we came across this Best Western Zinon Hotel. We often stay in Best Western across the United States so we thought we can't go wrong with this one:
A longer walk, but still a walking distance from the Acropolis and the center, located 2 blocks from a transportation hob of the city, easy to hop on bus or metro, or just stroll down past numerous designers clothes and shoe shops, as well as small buffet style dine-outs. Regular room, smaller but clean, pleasant, air-conditioned, with all the amenities you find in any standard room. Best thing for us was the availability in the middle of the high season and the location of the hotel for the right price. No real dislikes, maybe just the buffet style breakfast which was nothing too exciting or plentiful.

Best Western in general is known for its standards. Zinon is not an exception: simple, comfortable, and clean. The best of all are people working there. They are genially caring, helpful, and kind. Their hospitality exceeded our expectations. Location has some pluses (Metro is close, walking distance to Plaka and Monasteraki) and quite a few minuses (neighborhood and its habitants, could be confusing to find, especially in the evening time). But don’t be discouraged by minuses, especially if you want to know real Greece and Athens. The value is absolutely right.

The reviews of it being in a sketchy area is true. At night there's a bunch of men just hanging around the street, which made me think there's either drug or gay activity around here, I even saw a prostitute get picked up (the only other woman besides me on the street). But the hotel is close to the metro, can be confusing to find. We survived. Breakfast was ham, cheese, hard boiled eggs, coffee, milk, cereal and apples. Two computers with internet are in the front (free).

Positives. Hotel and room were clean, staff was friendly and helpful. We got a low rate for the room, but considering the negatives, cannot give more than average rating for value. Negatives. Room was the smallest and most uncomfortable room we stayed in during a two week trip to Greece. The hotel is located in a pretty bad neighborhood AND it is located on a backroad/alley and very hard to find. We got lost trying to find it at night and would not recommend trying to walk at night. Finally, the hotel is not convenient to anything other than the Omonia train station. We got what we paid for, maybe a little less.

The hoel is basic but clean and with all you coul need for a place to sleep (nothing more). The staff is helpful and speaks english most of the time. The breakfast is quite good for the price. Too bad the coffe shop has no service beyond breakfast. The area is really not nice, especially at night, unless you are shopping for drugs, we had a bit of a hard time finding the place as we arrived at Omonia station at night and started to be concerned about strolling in the neighbourhood. Once you get the hang of the place it is OK though, we stayed for a week and returned at night with no incidents. If you look around you can get chep food nearby and in the day the market is an interesting place.

I was a woman on my own and having arrived at the Omonia metro station spent some time trawling about seedy streets where police with truncheons were much in evidence before I found the locked glass doors of the hotel. They opened at once when the lovely receptionist saw me trying to get in and not looking like one of the many dubious characters hanging about. But this was the afternoon and it did not bother me personally at all. I decided not to come here on my own in the dark however.

This was one of the few hotels in Athens I could book from England online and I had to spend one night in Athens. My room was lovely with a fan and no end of TV channels including ones in English..It was so international and modern I almost thought I could revert to British plumbing rules instead of Greek ones and I asked But no - paper in the bin not flushed down the loo. Breakfast was fine - both Greek and western "continental" and as much as you liked. It was very convenient for the National Archaeological Museum and restaurants in Omonia Square.
