“Greek Heston”

My husband and I went there last night having read the reviews.
Good lord were we in for a surprise.
Firstly i was very glad that we scrubbed up and dressed well, secondly it took us a bit of walking around in a dark, dirty back street to find it ( I suggest looking up into the high windows on the corner building. When you see the mirrored ceilings ,and find a large white door with a step look to the right of the door recess and there will be a line of doorbells . One says Funky Gourmet. Et voila!.The polite, friendly staff were beyond amazing and the food is SO Heston Blumenthal i will leave you to find out for yourselves.
One word of warning, there is a tiny menu that is not really going to do justice to the place so the next menu is the small taster of most things. This comes in at €85 per head, €125 with the Sommelier bringing two glasses of well explained wines with most of the main courses. Fore-warned is fore-armed as they say.
Lastly , you think you won't be full. Trust me you will

“Wow - Savoury version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

We had high expectations ahead of our visit and they were truly surpassed. Following previous reviews we opted for the full tasting menu
(14 courses). Every course was a pleasure and we were not over full by the end.

There isn't too much to add in reference to the food which either hasn't already been said in previous reviews or would spoil your experience.

The service was perfect ; friendly, helpful, not stuffy, attentive (but not over so) and well paced.

They can also arrange a taxi for you at the end of the meal to collect you and return you to your hotel.

Total bill was approx 300 euro which included pre dinner prosecco, bottle of good quality wine and after dinner drinks. Cheaper options are available

Amazing - a must do while in Athens

You do need to book in advance

This is an excellent restaurant in all respects. We were passing thought Athens and we only had one night so we tried making a booking three nights in advance and it was all booked. I checked back on the afternoon of the night we wanted, the very polite maitre d' said she'd do her best if she had a cancellation and she did call me at 8 to let me know of an opening. We had the small degustation menu as we had unfortunately eaten too late for lunch.

The food was excellent in all respects and well deserving of its Michelin star. We're Greek even though we don't live here any more but I think being Greek adds something to the experience as several dishes are inspired by traditional Greek dishes and the new twists of molecular cuisine to e.g. Choriatiki salad is mind blowing! It's definitely going to be enjoyed by all but the tastes will evoke special memories in Greeks.

We've eaten at other Michelin starred restaurants and Funky Gourmet is right up there with the rest (some dishes better others less so in comparison but all excellent). One thing that is better to at least other michelin star restaurants I've visited lately was the presentation of the dishes. Really inspired and impressive!

And the service friendly, professional, polite and upbeat.

Bravo funky gourmet team! Keep up the good work, we'll be back for the full menu.

“Absolutely sensational”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012 via mobile

We went to dinner with friends & family on 29th September & had a wonderful degustation dinner with incredible tastes and presentation. Service was flawless & they allocated us a waiter who informed us of the details of each course in english which made it so much easier to understand as only a few of us spoke greek. Suggested wines (greek & other european) to complement our dishes worked very well indeed.
Our greek guests raved about the dinner.
A superb night overall.

“An outstanding meal,an outstanding eating experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

We recently visited Athens and had the most wonderful eating experience at Funky Gourmet. The fabulous food, presentation and service were outstanding! This was not only "art on a plate" ,it was innovative in the use of the ingredients and cooking techniques. The food and wine staff were very knowledgable and made our last night in Athens very memorable. Our wine waiter recommended a magnificent red from Macedonia which perfectly complemented our meal,it was an excellent wine even by French or Australian standards.
This restaurant has been voted the No 1 restaurant in Athens for the past 3 years and it is truly deserving of this honor. We feel very privileged to have eaten there.
