We went here based on the recommendation of our taxi driver, Alex during a recent visit to Greece. It was the best meal we had in Greece! The owner was so nice, making us feel quite comfortable and the food, well it was just fabulous. We had a chicken gyro, which melted in our mouths, moussaka and then baklava. A huge meal, but we couldn't stop eating it was so good.

if you happen to stroll through the center of athens or if you re staying in a hotel there, you canorder foor from fagopoteion.every day it makes around 10 different food recipes all home-made and of course the standard salads like fava, choriatiki etc.it has nice meat (i strongly recommend the "sofrito"0 ) and of course kembab or gyros.thei vegetables also are fresh.they have nice stuffed tomatoes, or papoutsaki (with melitzana-eggplant).you can ask on the phone the today food.people are eager to help and i 'm sure you can find your way with the english language.the prices are ok.around 7-8 euros for a meal.if you add salad maybe around 12 euros you re stuffed.the important thing is ,they have quality home-made food, they deliver really quickly, they are friendly and their prices are inviting.trust me and try it once.i believe you WILL eat again.now ,if you happen to walk close by you can eat inside.it s ok.not really interesting tavern or cozy.it is clean and unpretentious.no loud music or anything disturbing.but nothing really special,if your idea is to go and have the real experience of a greek tavern.the food makes the difference there.

I was actually here in April 2010, but the drop-down menu won't let me put that. I walked here from my hotel to have dinner. My roomates and I dined here quite a bit when I stayed in the neighborhood in 2002, and I just had to go back. It was even better than I remember. I ordered in Greek and got to go to the kitchen and preview my food (they have a counter with a sneezeguard that you can look through) before I ordered it. I was proved with excellent bread that was much better than I remember it back in 2002.

You can get beer and wine, but the main focus here is food. Amble to one of the cafes or bars in the neighborhood if you're looking for a fancy postprandial drink.

I have always ordered in Greek at this particular establishment, but as I recall they usually have at least one English-speaker around. If not, get up and point at what you want, and they will more than likely oblige!

One further note: The correct address is 56 Patriarkhou Ioakeim, not "Loakeim" as written above. Look for the green sign that says ΦΑΓΟΠΟΤΕΙΟΝ (see picture).

We came across this restaurant in the Kolonaki area of Athens during holy week 2011; It's a very warm, friendly taverna with delicious, reasonable food - we loved it and wished we had found more restaurants like this during our visit to Greece.

Spanikopita (spinach, cheese and phyllo)
Pastitio (lasagna-like dish)
Kolokythakia Tiganita (fried zucchini)
Saganaki (fried cheese)

and even Gyros - ALL WERE EXCELLENT.

Don't forget to get a side of Tzatziki (yogurt, cucumber and dill) to dip your bread in or put on anything you don't feel has enough flavor (or calories).

Reasonable, quality food, friendly atmosphere.
