“Modern, Clean and Delicous”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We stayed at the New Hotel for two nights. The location is perfect just a few blocks away from the acropolis. The hotel rooms have a very modern minimalist feel which we really liked and also loved how clean the rooms were. The hotel makes all their own pastries which were delicious. They also have a restaurant/bar on the roof of the hotel which gives you wonderful views of the Parthenon. tip- go at night so you can night cap with he Parthenon lit up as your backdrop!

We stayed here for 4 nights. The breakfast was really very nice, they had everything from fruit and yogurt to eggs and bacon. The staff at both the front desk and restaurant were very attentive. The location was also a huge plus for us as restaurants and tourist attractions were just a few minutes walk away. The rooms are small but we expected that in a large city. The view from their rooftop bar is also absolutely wonderful. One can view the Acropolis lit up at night with a nice glass on wine.

Room Tip: Bring a makeup mirror, the lighting isn't so great.

We stayed one night at the New Hotel and, although not perfect, it was very enjoyable and we were immensely pleased we had chosen it over the more staid luxury hotels (the Grande Bretagne for example). Great location, fabulous staff, good food, superb breakfast, original rooms - very modern and therefore slightly impractical, but fun and interesting, nevertheless. And the bed was very comfortable. The top floor suite, which we visited, was sensational, with the most beautiful view of the Acropolis from the terrace. I would definitely chose to go there again for the sheer gaiety of the place.

We loved the overall concept as do most other visitors. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the service is excellent It is perfectly situated and easy to reach via bus or metro. The breakfast is scrumptious! The downside is that we occupied a studio which is advertised as a space for 3 people. as my (adult) daughter travelled with us , that suited us very well. However , although it is a very nice room , it is very tight for 3 people. The couch serves as the 3rd bed and even the staff who helped us wit our luggage saw that it would not suffice for our daughter. with the unpleasant result that the couch was pushed into the corner , an extra bed was squeezed in and we had to squeeze rather than move around each other all the time The bathroom , although quite , is not suitable for 3 people and so is the storage space. This studio might be suited for 2 adults and a child , but it is not a pleasant stay for 3 adults. As mentioned , the breakfast was excellent , but they have this very mean , penny-pinching attitude that every guest is allowed 1 x cappuchino - if a second one is ordered , you are billed for it. As neither my husband or daughter had one , it could simply been seen as the second cup for a table of 3 - this left a bitter taste in the mouth!! All in all a pleasant stay , but they will do well to address these issues which does spoil the overall effect

Room Tip: A studio suite is lovely for 2 adults , but a tight squeeze for 3!

New hotel

The welcome was lovely, our bell boy even did a little hotel intro in perfect french
Hotel is superbly located 5 min of syntagma square and hotel grande bretagne
Took x95 bus from airport and walked 5 min super easy
In the entrance of this hip, chic design hotel there is a fruit basket, custom chocolate and bottle water for guest, turn down service also offers custom chocolate
The hotel is really trendy and swanky
Room was immaculate with a great view on the city
Housekeeping was stellar
Loved the rooftop bar and food and drinks we had there, it was very cool
Everyone was super friendly and we felt really welcome at this hotel
The girls at the front desk got me a hair appointment at a fabulous salon down the street
Were able to walk to all the sites easily
Great restaurants nearby ( avocado's around the block)
Overall 5 star experience

We stayed in two great hotels during our visits to Athens but only New Hotel left us wanting more and wishing we had stayed longer. The whole concept behind this hotel is intriguing and well executed. From the moment we pulled up to the front door the service was some excellent without being over the top. We were treated with respect, courtesy, great refreshments, and staff who took actions instead of just lip service.
Our room was postcard themed with a great ambiance, comfortable bed, and refreshing Apivita toiletries. Had we not been walking all through Plaka we would have taken advantage of the balcony. The morning of our departure was before breakfast so they packed a quick to-go bag for us. Thank you. The only negatives we could say were minor due to noise from the busy streets (but still better than most) and an electricity buzz in the room.
All things combined for a truly uncommon stay that had us wanting more in a good way.

Room Tip: I would book a room on a higher floor next time due to traffic noise

My wife and I stayed at the New Hotel for four nights. We found the location to be as close to perfect as possible, and the staff was accommodating and helpful. I'm going to give this review four stars since I think some very important things were excellent: The location, the staff, the comfortable bed, and the delicious food at breakfast. But, as you have probably read by the previous reviews, this thotel has a fairly modern edgy design and has made an attempt to pay some respect to the previous hotel at this location. This is a really cool idea, and I applaud their efforts. However, after living in a guest room for 4 nights, I've come to the conclusion that this should have been kept to the common areas-rather than in the guestrooms.

We had a Junior suite, which was a bedroom, and an attached sitting room. This cost a bit more than a regular room and seemed like a good idea since it would give us some more space to spread out. However, this space was not well utilized. We still had a bedroom with a king size bed and barely enough room to walk around it - yet adjacent to this was a room which contained almost nothing; a low, modern, uncomfortable sofa; a 7 foot tall ladder back chair that no one would ever sit on; a very ugly bi-level black plastic coffee table, a TV mounted on the wall; and a credenza under the TV. There was a floor lamp that was never plugged in, and the center of the room was a orange, multilevel, irregularly shaped, sculpted carpet. This was so sculpted that in some areas you could actually see the floor through the pile, and was apparently impossible to clean, because it was dirty. This was an enormous trip hazard, and we avoided that room in the dark. It also made it impossible to move rolling luggage across the room. This room was basically a useless appendage to the hotel room. It was separated from the bedroom by a glass door-so if one wanted to use that room to read or watch TV without disturbing a person sleeping, this was not possible. We used the sofa as a suitcase rack, but otherwise had no use for the room - yet we were cramped in the adjacent bedroom.

But an even greater display of design over function is the bathroom. The toilet is in a glass enclosed area, in the corner of the bedroom, very similar to a phone booth. It is approximately 24 inches from the head of the bed-and is not soundproofed. Using this bathroom brought us to levels of auditory intimacy that we had not experienced previously in our 40 years together. Other reviewers have mentioned the strange, yellow tinted, irregularly shaped mirror perched over the golden sink. Two guys designed these new rooms, according to what we read, and I do not think they got a woman's opinion on anything. No woman would be able to use the yellow mirror and put her makeup on -- this is a major design flaw. The idea of a golden sink might've been a good one in the shop-but the moment one brushes one teeth, it turns into a pretty unsightly mess. Again, as previously mentioned there is really no storage space around the sink other then around the edge of the bowl and a little counterspace to the right. There is a mysteriously placed cut out under the sink containing a golden stool. If one sat on it, it places put your chin at about the height of the sink. I am having trouble coming up with a use for this particular stool in that particular location. The shower, has one of those unexpectedly popular rain shower type of heads. However it does have a nice wand-type head that can be positioned to provide water like a normal shower. However the shower door is so tight to the floor, that it is not possible to put a bath mat on the floor outside the shower, because opening the door pushes the mat away. So, every night The floor became soaking wet.

Being very modern, the room has very nicely placed electrical outlets which I have found is an unusual feature of European hotel rooms. I really appreciated that. However the light switches are unusual. On each side of the bed is a phalanx of six switches. After four days in that room, neither my wife nor I really had any understanding of which switch did what, so that any time that you want to turn a particular light on or off, you had to randomly pick which side of the bed may control it and start flipping through the six switches in sequential order. Clearly, they should've been placed somewhere closer to their function, and/or marked. If someone is sleeping, and you want to turn the lights off, it is hard not to accidentally turn other lights on.

Another huge mistake is the shelf that slides out of the desk. Great idea, but things do not stay on it because there are no ledges on any of the sides.

We did not have dinner there, but did use the rooftop restaurant/bar - which is beautiful, and we were baffled why it wasn't busier. It has a stunning view of the Acropolis, and downtown Athens at night.

So, although they have excellent food and the beds are wonderful, they really need to re- think the functionality of the rooms.
