“Arrogant staff and extra charges”
Reviewed July 28, 2009

Although the hotel was very fancy and in a nice location, I thought the staff was arrogant and condescending. I don't know if it was because my husband and I are very young, but the staff answered our questions sarcastically and made us feel like we didn't belong there. Also beware of the small extra charges for everything. For example, you can get a cab off the street as soon as you step out of the doors. But god forbid the concierge gets you a cab - because they add 3 Euros for that. Or if you want to store your bags at the hotel while travelling elsewhere....they charge you for that too. Usually as a guest of a hotel and such a fancy one, you should be able to get these services gratis. Further the staff kept telling us that taking a cab was the best way to get anywhere...when in fact there is a metro stop less than 2 blocks away which is very convenienent! We stopped asking the desk anything and just figured it out ourselves.

I stayed for 3 nights at the royal olympic & can't fault it:
LOCATION: 5 min. walk to plaka, same to the nearest tram stop, about 10 to 15 min. walk to syntagma and the acropolis,20 min. walk to ATTICA store.
ROOMS: my executive room was excellent with everything u need,LCD screen, bath supplies & comfort beds,it had no view but I didn't care much about that
STAFF: completely helpful and excellent english, the doorman, the reception staff & waiters were all great
FOOD: great breakfast with good variety (sausages,bacon,pastries,omlettes,etc....),the rooftop restaurant has great views & setting but a lot pricey,I recommend kuzina restaurant for similar views.
finally, for the rate I got ( 105 euros per night) it's certainly your first choice in athens.

Lovely airy quiet hotel with nice pool in the heart of cultural Athens. About a 5-7 minute walk to new Acropolis museum/Plaka.

We stayed recently with our 4 year old son who had a ball in the pool. We had booked a room for 3 and were very surprised to get a room within a room which was great as it allowed us put him to bed yet still potter around/ watch TV.

Overall, a great hotel in good location for all the cultural sights of Athens. Probably one of the best in Athens.

Not knowing Athens,Greece very well, I was apprehensive in reserving my hotel. I did a lot of reading of reviews to gain my perspective. The thing I believe you must know is there really IS a ''bad side of town'' in Athens. We ate and shopped in the Plaka most nights after our tours or wanderings. The Plaka is great and festive, but outside the general area of the Plaka is very shady and dirty. For example, "The Plaka Hotel" was a hotel that some tourist (we met on one of our Island tours) were staying. They said it was a must see for the view. Clearly they had no idea what else was available because, though it was a nice view, it wasn't the only nice view in town. You can get a nice view almost anywhere, however the ''Plaka Hotel'' was in a shady part of town and the establishment was dingy and uninviting. We did the questionable elevator ride to the top, we did find a beautiful view, but a bar that closed at 11pm, so we couldn't stay and enjoy it. The Royal Olympic on the other hand feels warm and inviting from the moment you step in the door. That is unless you are looking for plaid fluffy couches and elk heads on the wall. This was definitely decorated ''Greek style'' and I loved it. We stayed in a decent room, but not the amazing view room. However the rooftop bar stayed open till 2am, so after our dinner, we usually meandered upstairs and enjoyed a glass of wine. We also enjoyed a wonderful Dinner on the roof. It was good food and good service. However, the Plaka is full of great food, it is much less expense and is certainly within walking distance. It is rare not to have a good view in Athens. The Parthenon dominates the city and is extremely lit at night, assuring visibility of the great figure. The wonderful perk to the Royal Olympic was on the roof you can sit, watch a sunset or simply stare at the stars with a glass of wine. To the left is the Parthenon... and then you look slightly to your right and there is the Temple of Zeus (see pictures). There is a great pool area, though we never used it due to everything else we wanted to do. There are several places to just sit and relax with a good book, like a spacious library area, a small bar area by the pool or just lounge poolside.

In the end we were pleased, and would only liked to have had a better view from our room. I don't blame the Hotel for that, our area of concern was not the view from our room, as we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. The room was neat and clean and had a feeling of comfort. Nice beds, thick tie back curtains with some Greek accents. A flat screen TV with cable choices. Nice clean bathrooms. And spacious for a European hotel room. My husband travels the world for a living, and has been to Greece before, and he was pleasantly surprised.

Now here is the disclaimer for my review. Both my husband and I are pretty relaxed, low drama people. We tend to see the positive in most situations. i don't read into a waiters sigh or look, i don't look for water spots on my spoon. We enjoy life and travel and appreciate a nice comfortable place to stay. So if you tend to be a high maintenance person, well, perhaps you should read some of the other reviews. If a place is unclean or in a questionable location, well...we simply find a new place to stay, no big deal. The Royal Olympic is neither unclean or located poorly, and we found it to be a wonderful place to rest our tired bodies after exploring.

We arrived at the hotel after a very hot traipse through Athens and were so relieved to see two very smartly door staff hurry towards us and relieve us of our cases. That was the first of many good experiences at this hotel.
Our honeymoon was a stay in Athens followed by a flight to Istanbul and a further stay there. The Olympic was fantastic; extremely luxurious with a beautiful pool area and roof top bar/ restaurant with amazing views of Athens.
The breakfast was very varied and of a good quality, served over a long period. Our only criticism would be that it would be better to be able to serve yourself coffee.
The hotel was well sited, close to everything in a very safe feeling area.
Ok, the drinks and food were on the pricey side but in reality you are in a city and you are on holiday- everything is pricey. For a few euros more it is well worth it for the service, nothing was a problem, the environment and the location. Should we to go to Athens again we will definitely stay here again and would advise anyone else to do likewise.

Lovely view of the Temple of Zeus from my room window. Very pleasant comfortable room. The girls on reception were alot more friendly than the men. Had a vastly over-priced not very good meal in the restaurant. Food from pool bar over-priced and little choice. Very difficult crossing the road from the hotel in the daytime - even when the traffic lights are red the cars don't always stop!

We had a very nice two day stay and overall were impressed by the comfortable feel of the hotel. The hotel apparently has been substantially renovated in recent years. We did not use the hotel restaurant except for the complimentary breakfast which was quite complete and varied. The pool patio area was comfortable and inviting. The only disappointment was that the guest room seemed a bit small for the price.
