Grande Bretagne is truly an excellent hotel, from its position in the very center of Athens and the panoramic vues to Akropolis and to Lycabetus - the two landmaks of Athens - to the facilities it offers to its guests and the attention of the staff. In most places in the world, hotels with such a location, would prefer to limit to the advantages offered by the location and would do little more to keep the customers satisfied. At Grande Bretagne, the services are at the highest level and the staff is doing a perfect job, without relying too much on the wonders of Athens which may be found just in front of the hotel or at a short walking distance!
Grande Bretagne is a reference and can be a model for any hotel which claims or intends to be considered an excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Take care, some rooms might have an ugly vue, to a backyard which I guess that either is surrounded by the administrative parts of the hotel or it might be a neighboring building.

We recently stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on our final 2 days of our family trip to Greece. We had 2 adjoining rooms, one for my husband and myself and the other for our 2 teenage children. The rooms were luxurious and well stocked with bath products, plenty of towels, complimentary water bottles and luxurious bath robes. My only complaint was our room smelled of fish, as it the previous guest had a fish lunch right before we checked it. It took a few phone calls , but finally housekeeping came and provided air fresher and we opened our balcony window as well. We decided to do some sightseeing and when we came back, the fishy smell was gone.

Because the comfort and beauty of this hotel, the location is superb. You are within walking distance to the Parliament bundling , the Plaka, the famous Acropolis and surrounding sights as well as the flea market area, great restaurants and shopping. We only used a cab to get to and from the airport and to go the national museum....otherwise we walked everywhere.

Another great experience we had was in the hotel's spa area. There is an indoor pool, women and men locker rooms with showers, robes, towels and slippers as well as several saunas, steam baths, foot baths and showers. After a long day of sightseeing, our family of four enjoyed all the different baths and felt refreshed and ready for final Greek dinner later that evening.

We chose this hotel for our recent vacation in Athens. We were greeted by a driver at the airport, but I would not book a car through the hotel in the future as the cost is double that of a normal taxi (60 euros compared to 30 euros). Arrival at the hotel was a bit chaotic as there was not a bellman in sight to take our luggage which was frustrating for both us and the taxi driver who left our luggage sitting in the street. Check in was also confusing as we started to check in at the lobby and were directed to the butler check in on the 6th floor. This was a small parlor with private check in and we were assigned a butler who was dressed in very "Downtown Abbey" fashion. Our room was nothing short of luxurious and a suite with a living room, bed room and large bath room. All was furnished with fine antiques and chandeliers hung from the ceiling. We had a welcome gift of ouzo and olives which was quite nice. The rack rate of the suite indicated 1890 euros. The bed was huge, soft and comfortable and the room had three televisions including one inserted into the wall at the foot of the tub. The bathroom amenities were only the best and in copious amounts. In other words, the room was spectacular!!!! Also our luggage arrived quickly.

We went for cocktails at the bar off of the lobby which was old school men`s club English with wainscoting and a huge tapestry over the bar. Cocktails were large and made to perfection by the bartender. The next morning we had breakfast at the rooftop restaurant which had an extraordinary view of the Akropolis Hill. We arrived very early (good idea) and snagged one of the tables at the balcony with the best view. As the hotel is a favorite for cruise ship passengers who arrive en masse is best to arrive early in the morning. The breakfast buffet was excellent with fresh breads and Greek cheese puffs, meats, cheeses, all types of Greek yogurts in crocks, fruits, various types of honey, grilled mushrooms (delicious) and eggs cooked perfectly to order in olive oil. Coffee was good but not plentiful. Service was professional although a bit aloof. Also we could not get a Bloody Mary which you would think in a five star luxury property you could be served most anything at anytime. The waiter looked at me like I was from another planet when I asked for the drink. The juices were a bit sour and thin too. But the view is beyond comparison!

The concierge had arranged all of our tours and restaurants prior to arrival and all went off perfectly. But during our stay trying to ask anything from the concierge was like pulling teeth. Also getting a taxi at the hotel was frustrating; however, the metro station is next to the hotel.

After a day of touring and shopping,we returned to the hotel in the late afternoon only to be surprised as the lobby had turned into an airport security type entrance complete with metal detectors and x raying of all bags and packages. We had not been forewarned of these measures which were highly inconvenient and turned the five star lobby from an entry into a luxury property into an entry into a government office building and made the ambiance very cold and distant. We chose to complain and were only given excuses by the Manager on Duty and the Butler. Finally I spoke to the General Manager who explained that the measures were in place for a VIP guest who turned out to be a religious official from Russia. You would think all guests would be VIPs at a property such as the Grande Bretagne considering the cost of rooms. Our entire experience at the hotel was ruined by Management`s attitude and handling of the complaint combined with the onerous security procedures which inconvenienced all guests at the property for one guest. They did send a bottle of wine to the room as a gesture of apology.

To conclude, the property is luxurious and grand with amazing amenities and views; however, when a guest has a complaint, the hotel has a surly attitude and does not respect the opinion of the guest to resolve the problem. The icing on the cake is beautiful, but the inside of the cake is hardened. As a Starwoods Platinum Member, the hotel certainly is top of the line for the brand, but the response to issues marred the experience for me as a member of SPG.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the inner courtyard as these are quieter.

Can't imagine staying anywhere else in Athens if you can afford it. Public areas are impressive and the rooms are plush and comfortable. Great service. Most memorable is dining at the rooftop restaurant with fantastic food and a view of the Acropolis and Parthenon alit and awesome.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with Parthenon views.

The Grande Bretagne is 100% Class and certainly lives up to it's name. From the moment you enter the Foyer, you just know this is a special Hotel.
The Rooms are fantastic, we were upgraded to a Suite, complete with 2 Chandeliers, very large Bathroom and Bedroom, 6 or 8 Towels evry day, WIFI worked perfectly, a Pillow Menu, and a Roof Top Restaurant, looking directly at the Acropolis, just magnificient.
The Food quality was terrific and a great Wine and Beverage List.
Simply one of the best !
