“some niggles but overall comfortable”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

Enjoyed my stay at the Bretagne, despite a few annoying clinches that could have been avoided.
At the airport my car went off with somebody else? The TV video facility failed to work despite even after an engineer had been called? Batteries in the bathroom scale were flat? On the upside the hotel is nicely furnished with all the usual comforts of a five star hotel. Just paying attention to the details can make a big difference

This is a fine hotel with a colourful past - and present, given its location on Syntagma Square Square in troubled times! All was to our liking: a pleasant staff; efficient service; comfortable, well-appointed bedroom; and fabulous views of the Acropolis. Breakfast wasn't included, but it was well worth the extra. Lunch and high tea in the ground floor restaurant compared well with other hotels of this standard, and were delicious.

Our one small gripe relates to the behaviour of a small number of guests. As a courtesy to all who are paying a small fortune to stay here, a distinction needs to be drawn between what is appropriate clothing for, say, bouncing a ball around a basketball court, and what is appropriate for breakfast in a luxury hotel. Truly, grown men shouldn't slob into a 5 star restaurant attired in running shorts, a baseball cap worn back-to-front, and a sleeveless vest showing too, too much body hair. Yeuch.

Room Tip: A balcony room with terrace at the front of the hotel gives a fabulous view of the Acropolis. Any tr...

The Grande Bretagne in Athens is without doubt one of the best hotels in the world. With a spectacular location, a friendly, detail-oriented staff, and luxurious accommodations -- from the lobby to the roof top restaurant -- this is a quintessential 5 star hotel.

It's hard to know where to begin, because virtually everything about this hotel is top rate. The only short-coming in my mind is the fact that inexplicably, there is a hefty charge for in room wifi. Given that many of the hotel's visitors are from places around the world far from Greece, the need to go down to the small, not well-equipped business center or the hotel lobby to check emails in the middle of the night is a real inconvenience for guests that should be changed.

Having said that, let me enumerate a few of the totally positive aspects aspects of the stay. The airport pick up service was superb and much welcomed after a lot of time in planes and airports. The lobby of the hotel is magnificent, spacious, and has numerous seating areas.

The breakfast buffet is world class in all regards, and there may be no better venue in the universe than the roof-top garden, which lets you gaze serenely at the nearby Acropolis while sipping your coffee or tea. The vast array of delicious food items -- both Greek and universal -- was also of 5 star (perhaps 6 star) quality. The waiters are attentive and quickly bring any items requested in a most friendly manner. And unlike at many hotels, there are linen napkins and linen tablecloths, making this a truly luxurious way to begin the day.

The concierges are helpful in suggesting places to dine, giving directions, making reservations, and assisting with minor glitches, such as printing out airline boarding passes. Kudos to them for their helpfulness.

The pool area is quite lovely, although the pool itself is a bit on the small size. Attendants bring around cold face towels, water spray bottles, cold drinks, and are very pleasant and on top of things.

The spa is lovely as well in all regards, although spa services are on the pricier side. There is also a comfortable cigar lounge that provides a quiet place to think away from the hustle and bustle of the lobby. One other lovely convenience: an ATM on the level beneath the lobby, which is very useful especially for foreign visitors.

The rooms are elegantly furnished, relatively spacious for a European hotel, with gorgeous bathrooms and the requisite thick, comfortable bathrobes, top shelf sundries such as shampoos, bath gels, and skin lotions, and good lighting. The water pressure is terrific and the air conditioning works effectively and efficiently -- a must for Athens at this time of year. The beds are as comfortable as any I've slept in around the world in top hotels. And housekeeping is flawless in its devotion to doing everything exactly right.

The front desk service was a little below par (rushed, impersonal) both at check in and check out, but other than that, just about every aspect of this hotel is as close to perfection as one gets.

I have stayed at 5 star hotels before but this is the best one yet. The staff is amazing and I can't say enough good things about the consierge! Quick, very friendly, knowledgeable and i want to take them with me everywhere I go! :) I traveled with my 9 year old and they were so friendly to her. The chef made her a hat.. The consierge made jokes with her. the spa is large with pool, jacuzzi, 4 different steam rooms, sauna, reflexology tub, tea, water, etc no charge and they gave my daughter a pink robe. Also best location walk to Acropolis best shopping museums restaurants etc. and the beds are so comfortable. great rooftop pool .. excellent food..Amazing hotel!

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms I believe are an upgrade but you don't face the busy street

Grande Bretagne was more expensive than some options, but after a long flight, we were really pleased to be pampered. Rooms were a bit small, but felt safe despite initial concerns about Athens.

Especially enjoyed breakfast buffets with rooftop views and a moonlit martini in the bar.

Attended a destination wedding at this marvellous hotel. My suite on the Butler served 7 th floor was first class. Throughout the hotel the quality of service was exceptional, friendly, helpful and not invasive. The rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking the Acropolis are without equal and the pool is small and cozy. Food at all restaurants and for the large wedding banquet was consistently excellent. Only slight quibble is that the three elevators are wholly inadequate for an hotel of this size. P

If you are a starwood member - i advise that you must stay here. They will treat you like royalty. First there is a separate floor for check in for starwood guests and they give you champagne upon arrival. We had a private balcony with a beautiful room. The next day we got another bottle of champagne (on the house). Their pool and restaurant/bar are on the roof - the view is amazing. Their drinks are a bit overpriced but the hotel is 5 stars. Perfect location to everything and the service was the best service we had anywhere on our honeymoon. Must stay here - esp for starwood.

Room Tip: Get an amex starwood cc and then sue your points. They will put you in a great room with private bal...
