“A glamour among ruins”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

The hotel owns not just the obvious luxury in its decorative details in the lobby and its rooms which easily make it stand out from all other hotels in Athens, but also an interesting history of 140 years which matches the identity of the historical capital of the western culture. (Read the hotel magazine in your room to add value of your host.) The environment went too well with the tourists' experience as a whole like a package. The staff is fantastically professional: I was literally welcomed and served politely and patiently, seamlessly followed by the valet parking staff, then the courteous front desk, helpful porters and, most surprisingly, a butler, who introduced himself and left his card for all-time summons.

The rooms are all furnished elegantly in classical European style, rich in taste, with a crystal chandelier in each of its suites. The size is limited by its the architectural structure I guess, but the careful renovation definitely covers well its real age. The shortcoming is the lack of view to the Acropolis in the suites, nor the Syntagma Square which provides a more spacious view than the interior courtyard.

The Roof Garden is marvelous with its panoramic view of the city from the Acropolis, the old Olympic Stadium, far reaching the highest hilltop named Lycavittos. The breakfast includes a selection of Greek desserts which they serve during fasting times, and the restaurant in the evening was crowded with decent visitors, with a romantic atmosphere with the glamorously spotlit Acropolis in the background. Food is great from the bread platter.

Being the most luxurious landmark in the city close to a lot of attractions, the hotel naturally attracts also some nuisance. Don't loss your attention at the lobby on your properties! My friend spotted a pickpocket at the lobby during our check-in.

Room Tip: Rooms facing interior courtyard are more quiet. Those facing Syntagma Square probably give you a mor...

From the moment of our arrival, we knew we were at a special hotel. The hotel and it's staff exude the highest standards of Quality and focus on guest satisfaction. After two long flights we retreated to the hotel spa and relaxed in several hot saunas.
We enjoyed dinner last night in their rooftop outdoor restaurant overlooking the Acropolis.
This morning our expectations were exceeded at breakfast which was complete with fresh fruit, an assortment of baked pastries and hot entrees.
We will be returning to Athens next week and we look forward to another day at the Hotel Grande Bretagne.

I am so fussy- but this hotel meets every standard. There are little things like small insects in your room and the spa slightly dated- but, the service is 150% fantastic. The food is fantastic and the cleanliness of the room is spot on. The pools are awesome and the choice of sauna rooms is great. This is certainly the best hotel experience we have had compared to the W in Paris and St Regis in Rome.
Alexandra Petsou from Rooftop garden gb and Meena our Butler was especially fantastic. So warm and caring- customer service to extremes. I would recommend this hotel
And this is the only hotel I will stay in in Athens.

I love everything about this grande old Dame of athens.
It has everything a visitor to Athens would want.
It is Luxurious without being stuffy, it has friendly staff who make you feel at home, it has great restaurants, one with outstanding views of the Acropolis,it is central to everything, and in walking Distance to all you want to visit or see in Athens, with the subway also next to the hotel. It has history and is legendary, but most of all it has a heart.
In summer you have the beautiful rooftop pool and in Winter the just as impressive Indoor pool in the spa area.
This is a Hotel to be seen in, or not seen at all, it is up to you.
Now is the time to visit Greece when the prices are reasonable, and the Weather is Beautiful.

Room Tip: A drink or Dinner at the Roof Terrace restaurant is a must to see the Acropolis lit up in all its gl...

We stayed here in a deluxe room prior to joining our cruise ship. The Hotel is very traditional with wood panels and marble everywhere. The rooms are not big by some hotel standards but OK for two people. The bathroom had a tub and a shower cubicle and plenty of hot water and nice towels. I asked for a quiet room and we got one on the sixth floor overlooking the internal courtyard. It was indeed very quiet and the bed was very comfortable so we had a really good night’s sleep. The breakfast buffet was also very good with lots of choice and the orange juice is superb as stated by a previous reviewer. The view from the restaurant on the 8th floor was stunning overlooking the square, parliament building and the acropolis. My only complaint is that smoking is permitted at the tables on the terrace area which spoiled our breakfast as we were forced to move inside. It would be good if smoking was limited to one area beyond the breakfast tables on the terrace.
The rooftop pool is closed until 1st May which was a disappointment for my wife but she enjoyed the pool in the spa area which was also free for guests.

Room Tip: Very noisy main road out the front so go for an internal room and pass on the view if you are a ligh...

We stayed here for seven nights in April. The hotel is sheer luxury and each and everyone of the staff in there different departments were very courteous and very helpfull. Food and service is out of this world and we had a great view from our balcony which was on the seventh floor.

Room Tip: Our on the seventh room faced Syntagma Square which we found to be very good.

I stayed here in January for 4 nights with my mother and children.
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The food was good but not excellent.
The rooms were comfortable and clean if a little dark even in the middle of a bright sunny day.
The Spa was exquisite.
The resident dog who sleeps outside every night added more character and the Christmas tree and decorations were impressive and gave the lobby a very cheerful festive feel.
Overall the hotel was amazing but so expensive. My extra costs including room service for the children at dinner time came to more than double the price of my room charges.
It was a memorable stay and I was looked after so well, if I can afford to go back in future I will in a heart beat!
