As often right now my hotel visits are for business so bear that in mind. I stayed at the Grande Bretagne in November and found it glorious - food, accommodation, staff all top notch. The rooms are perhaps a little on the grandiose side (drapes, drapes, more drapes, chandeliers, swags, ruffs - you get the picture). But the most comfortable bed I have slept in for years (apart from my own); fantastic bathroom; wonderfully attentive and helpful staff; and perfect central location, a bird's eye view of the regular demonstrations...
True - Greece is on its knees thanks to Euroland insanity, compounded by the Greeks' own stupidities - but Athens is wonderful at any time of year, and this is definitely the best hotel in town. At €245/night (and that is just basic and with a discount) it really ought to be. Not for a cheap vacation but great if someone else is paying.
