Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

We liked this museum MUCH more than the Acropolis Museum.

The quality of the exhibits, the architecture, and the presentation of the artifacts is top notch.

My only complaint is: The placards that provide descriptions in English are in very tiny print and hard to read. We needed to get out our reading glasses.

Helpful hint --- the cafeteria on the Fourth Floor is very good.

“Excellent for (Almost) the Entire History of Greece”
Reviewed March 16, 2014

The Benaki Museum is arguably the best place in Athens to visit if you want a good overview of the (almost) entire history of Greece - the collection pretty much stops at the end of World War I. Highlights include an exceptional collection of Byzantine art and period costumes, but for lovers of literature, Lord Byron's pistols and other effects are also on display. The diversity of the collection separates it from the other major museums in the city, making it an essential stop for anyone wanting knowledge of more than just the classical era.

“Loved it”
Reviewed March 9, 2014

We had a well earned cup of coffee here and watched the weekly changing of the guards from the balcony. The museum was very well worth visiting.

“Benaki museum is a good introduction to the history of Athens”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

Not knowing a great deal of Athenian, or Greek, history we visited the Benaki museum to get an overview. And it did the job. You need a good couple of hours to do the collection justice but it is well worth it. No one room is too large. There is a good roof-top restaurant in which to absorb what you have seen and soak up a little sun.
