Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

A museum in the heart of Athens, it is a very interesting place, with art, history, all the things about Greece that most of us touristos would miss, and this goes for this museum as well, seems mostly locals frequent it, whilst tourists from abroad concentrate on the more flashy and known attractions.

“Good but not on my priority list”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

The Benaki Museum is pretty close to Syntagma Square and it's worth a visit, however if your time in Athens is limited then I would suggest to move it to 3-4 place. It has a nice collection but as some other reviewers suggested National Archaeological Museum has definitely the best collection in terms of ancient artefacts.

“Excellent Museum”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

The Benaki Museum is close to the Parliament Building in Athens and is well worth the short walk from the main square. The museum is spread over several floors and is very well set out. The artefacts span pre-history to more modern times. The Macedonian rooms (re-built on site) are impressive.
To finish there is a lovely roof top restaurant.
To do the museum justice, allow at least two hours to take it all in.

“Good for a quick visit”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

We visted on a thursday which had a late opening and no fees. It is over several floors and can be at times laborious. Although arranged in order it is no comparison to the National archaeological museum or the delphi museum or the acropolis museum.
It is worth a visit and it is quite with in walking distance from the main square
