Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

This Museum is a must for anyone visiting Athens who is looking for the history of the Greek people from the Ancient Times to the beginning of World War II. Allow yourself enough time to really enjoy each floor. The cafe has a nice outside terrace. However, beware of the gift shop "prices".

What a little gem! One of the best museums. Their collection is excellent and very good exposed. And their restaurant/coffee bar with a view is also top. Together with the Acropolis museum a museum you have to visit.

This private museum has a huge collection of fine objects telling the history of Athens. Of particular interest is the large collection of gold jewellery from the Thebes hoard. This jewellery dates from around 200BC but looks as it could have been made yesterday. The metal work is very fine and skillful. There is much else in the Museum to be seen, including national costumes from the Greek islands and the mainland. A fascinating collection

I really enjoyed this museum. It was in a beautiful mansion and held many interesting artifacts spanning thousands of years. I saw many things that I had never seen in museums before. There is wide variety of objects - clothing, jewelry, art, sculpture, furniture, whole rooms put together how they would have looked in a different time, pottery, and much more.

It was slightly odd that they had the museum gifts in with the historic artifacts and even more strange that half those items really weren't for sale in the gift shop. But I don't think it took away from the overall greatness of this museum and its contents.

This is a fantastic college, beautifully displayed in the former residence of Mr. Benaki. The collection merits several hours, and the delightful cafe on the second floor, half inside and half on a beautiful covered terrace overlooking the National Garden and Parliament provides a great break. Lunch there was surprisingly reasonable and delicious.
